Canada fought its war of independence in 1812. The US, mad at Britain decided Canada was closer and would invade. What ever they won, they would keep . 5 times the US attacked and 5 times they were repelled. In 1813 with no British soldiers to defend Montreal, 4000 American troops mostly KY and TN backwoods men crossed the border. There was one British officer, a French Canadien who lead 450 French Canadien Voltigeurs, 100 Mohawk Indians 50 Irish Catholics and a handful of escaped slaved from the US. Those 600 repelled the Americans and sent them back over the border. while 4000 British defeated 4000 Americans at Chrysler's farm in Ontario. It was the last time the US invaded Canada. One reason why we are not Americans.

2:29 Oh boy. My friend, I was about to write something much longer, but I'm not going to. You can google it yourself. The flag you displayed 2 and a half minutes into your video is the flag of India. The French-Indian War was fought in North America, between the British and the French, who were aided by many First Nations (indigenous) peoples across the continent. They were initially labelled as "Indians" by the British because something something Columbus, something something Passage to Asia, something something absolutely not the case. Not India. But ya know what? Screw it. Let's call them Indians anyways. For what it's worth, I understand your mistake. But come on. Google exists. It's a handy tool to master knowledge.

It seems whoever put together the animation for this did not know much. The earlier scene about the supposed destruction of the war of 1812 has a steel framed building in it. A technology that did not occur for about another 75 years later. It is small errors like these that spoil the effect of all the rest of the work that goes into this stuff.

This is hair-splitting. In every practical sense, the war was waged between Canada and the United States, with Canada having British support, as it naturally would. But London and Portsmouth, Dublin and Glasgow were never the site of battles, or even under threat. Most of Britain's manpower, materiel, and effort was concentrated far away from the North American theatre of war, which, to the British, was a by-the-way then and even more so now. Had the Canadian attitude been a welcoming one, the position of the British would have been untenable and their withdrawal from North America inevitable. The fact that Canadians already viewed themselves as distinct, while still embracing their imperial ties, was essential and effectively made the different. That was the sine qua non of Canada's continued existence to this day.

That was due to the US government requiring all foreigners to have passports to enter the United States after 9/11. The main reason US citizens require passports to enter Canada is because they require them when re-entering their own country to prove their citizenship.

1763. The French still held onto the Louisiana territory for a while longer. As well at 4:00, Canada did not really have any provinces. 1775. No tanks were involved in the revolution. They were not invented until WW1 in the mid 1910s. Independence did not won in 1776 but more like 1783 The writers also forgot that most of the English speaking population of what became Upper Canada were United Empire Loyalists. These were people who lived in the 13 colonies and supported the Empire against the rebellion. After the rebels won they were persecuted and harassed. Many moved to what became Upper Canada and then Ontario. So when 30 odd years later the Americans come calling again, these people who were chased out of the 13 colonies said "Hell No" to the Americans and fought back. . At the end of the war of 1812, they fail to point out Canada's proudest moment in that war, the burning of the White House by British/Canadian forces. Just to put an exclamation mark on our statement to the USA to not f**k with us again, So far it has held. I almost never downvote videos but I did this time as this was a poor description of the historical events and does not actually explain why we are separate countries. They only do a narration of some of the events and with horrid graphics that are mainly irrelevant to the narration or are from a wrong time or place. .

That KZbinr overstates the similarities between the two countries tremendously. I am quite shocked by it. I think he quite likes USA. Ontario is not unlike Chicago, and Michigan, and even New York State. But those places don't represent America. They are Yankee places. But they don't have the 'country people' in Canada that USA has. They don't have the same Southern country culture or even the same suburbia culture. The suburbs are sprawling in USA, in Canada they are quite compact. And California is quite different to BC to be honest. Canada is not really like California. California is quite gritty and very Spanish. Canada is very Chinese in parts. The culture really is quite different.

In 1775 there weren’t 13 colonies, if you throw Vermont, Upper & Lower Canada, and the Maritime provinces in there were actually 20 colonies. It’s always been a bit confusing why most of the other colonies didn’t join? My ancestors were actually loyalists who fled North during the revolution and did t come back down to the US till the late 19th Century. As someone with kinfolk on both sides of the border I have to say that the differences between non-Quebec Anglo Canada and the rest of the US are pretty small, but that also Canadians won’t admit that. They go out of their way to highlight the small differences between the two.

My older brother says “Canada is just USA’s hat” I mean they are both still considered North America. And Like France… canada is just one of America’s very close allies. Similar to England having Scotland to make up the rest of the UK In fact in early American history with the battle against the British, France gave their military training to America. So in a way we fought more like France before the U.S. developed they’re own type of battle style. It just so happens that canada wanted some freedom as well as America. The states in America can also work as their own County due to each state having some of their own rules and rights.

I think it stems from the American Revolution. The colonists rebelled against British rule. But like any conflict, not all the people agreed with it. Same here. Some colonists wanted no part of it and chose to remain loyal to the British Crown. It's just human nature that not everyone is gonna be on board with any cause or conflict.

Useing the flag of India. It was natives of the north American continent, not people from India. The few islands that France kept were in the gulf of St. Lawrence, just off the Newfoundland coast. Not in the mouth of the Hudson Bay. No tanks in the American revolution. Those didn't come about till WW1. A steel framed building in the depiction of the destruction of the war of 1812. Those didn't exist till a few decades later. Alberta, and Saskatchewan which he didn't mention were not quickly added as provinces. They were still territories, and didn't become provinces until September 5, 1905. Maybe do a little actual research before making a video.

Actually they are for all practical purposes. However, Canada remaining a separate country is more useful to the United States. Canada can do things that the United States prefers to avoid for whatever reason. For example, going into ukraine to train ukrainian soldiers immediately after russia took Crimea in 2014.

@matthewcao2279 the point being made here is that USA prefers Canada to be a separate country. Another example is that Canada could provide an extra vote for the USA in international forums. As for Ukraine it is a fact that Canada went in first although it wouldn't surprise me that a lot of the money came from the USA and as for the war Ukraine was successful because they had training Western weapons and were highly motivated

Mastering Knowledge, though Canada isn't part of the USA, it is part of America, specifically the North part, with the South part being the other half. The dividing line is the Colombia/Panama border. North America consists of 15 territories and 26 countries. The South version is made up of 12 countries and 1 territory (French Guiana). Although it's spelled New Found Land, the island portion of Newfound & Labrador is pronounced new-fun-LAND, Maryland is MARE-ih-lund, rather than MARY-land, and Canada's province of Ontario is on-TAIR-ee-oh, rather than on-TAR-ee-oh. In the process of listing off the Canadian provinces at the end, Saskatchewan was missed.

Here's a better solution: Dig a large trench along the Manitoba/Ontario border, then give it a shove. Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC become a separate country while everything east of Manitoba form another. Both have a seaport and renewable and non renewable resources for trade and manufacturing. The East has been screwing the West for too long and enough is enough. As for the United States? Both countries formed within the old Canada renegotiate a trade deal.

Mastering Knowledge, I missed this faux pas during my viewing, but saw it brought out in the comments--the flag of India representing the Indians in the French and Indian War. How do I break this to you? Christopher Columbus made the same mistake back in 1492. The people who were living here and in Canada, as well as all the way to the tip of South America, came over the Bering Land Bridge thousands of years ago, according to scientific evidence. Also, if you saw your actor, Daniel Day-Lewis, in Last of the Mohicans some time ago, you probably noticed that their skin tone and facial structure are worlds apart, are is their collective cultures.

Not the brightest bulb are you? There are a lot of differences. First off, your Democrats are right of our Conservatives, so there's that. Second, we don't have a cult like fetish when it comes to guns like Americans do. I mean, you literally don't care that children are being slaughtered in schools or someone accidentally drives into your driveway and deserves to be shot. Simply put, you value guns over lives and there's no denying that. Third, our police are far better trained and require a college education before they can even carry a gun. Fourth, we don't bankrupt people because they need healthcare services. Fifth, we preserve our wilderness while you all chant "drill baby drill". Sixth, we don't believe women are brood mares to be forced to carry pregnancies against their will. Seventh, we're not religious nuts who think anyone who isn't them deserves to be relegated to second class citizen. Eighth, we don't fixate on hyper-patriotism nor do we force it on people. One should be patriotic because they truly believe in their nation, not because they are, from 1st grade, made to pledge an oath of allegiance. Forced Patriotism is literally Fascism. Now these are just some of the differences and they are not few nor are they minimal, so yes, we are different and no, we don't want to join you. The arrogance of Americans is always such a banal thing to witness.
