I'm 36, in a happy relationship and I don't want kids. I have a lot of friends and family who have children and its definitely not my cup of tea. People ask me all the time 'oh but who is going to look after you when you get old'. No matter what happens parents who decide to have kids just to look after them when they get old r kidding themselves. I don't care what happens once I get old, in fact, I don't even know if I'll live until I get old. I live each day as it comes, I love my life and I enjoy every moment I can.

I think the number one reason is the “job vs cost of living ratio”. My grandpa had a simple union blue collar job- he never went to college. my grandma never worked (she was a stay home mom) with one simple salary they could buy a 4 bedroom house, send 3 kids to school and then to college during the 60’s, and: live a pretty good comfortable life. Today, with one blue collar salary, a family of 5 will live under or near poverty line. Life got harder, more complicated, and way more expensive. If you wanna make it you need to either work way harder, or spend way more time in college.

One of my bigger reasons that I've never seen discussed is how social media developed over the past 10 years. I grew up in the rise of facebook, and was lucky enough to not be fully emerged in it, but I posted a ton of stupid embarrassing stuff in my teens. I can't imagine the worry I'd have if I have a kid who's on social media the way that kids are now. These days babies leave a digital footprint from the day they are born and can't give consent about what's posted about them either. How does that impact their idea of social media and consent in general when they grow up? It's so scary to me
@WifeWithoutKids3 жыл бұрын
This is such a great point! I've wondered that myself.
@lolixxxx9883 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree that this is one more reason to not have children...how can you protect them from this kind of harm or other kind of harm social media related? On the other hand, you just can't forbid them to have a digital life because they couldn't grow up to be fully functioning adults...they wouldn't be adapted to society. I truly believe that the minute you give a cell phone to a child, whatever their age is, that's the moment in which you cease to have any sort of influence on them...they belong in the digital world, which many times is incredibly toxic, where you cannot follow them at all.

I was born in 81, so I am a millennial but more like a generation x as I was born in Hungary not in the West. I don't have/and will never have kids because they're very expensive and time consuming. You're talking about college and university, unfortunately my parents never had the money to pay for higher education. I decided to finish studying after my high school diploma. I've been working since the age of 19, because I wanted to earn my own money and get a training or something that I can use to get a good job. I've moved to the UK in 2006, and although I have a partner, we both don't want children because we don't feel like we can afford it and keep the lifestyle we have. I got pressurised so much by parents, relatives, people over the years, but I am a very stubborn person, nobody can change my mind.

Millennials seem to want a perfect world 2 multiply. Yet their parents didn't have a perfect world. You have the perfect mechanized techworld y'all have invented. If you hate it so much... petition and change, so that you can go back in time like our old folks, and live a little more primitive... cuz that seems like it will bring back a children mentality. Makes sense. Hopefully it seems like Millennial types will extinct themselves out in time!!! But this will be a great number loss here on Earth. But then maybe a different procreation mindset will take hold when they die off.

As others have said, I just don't want them. I get uncomfortable when a baby/child is crying. I don't like when they yell and scream. I don't have any interest in paying for a heaps of clothing and diapers. I don't want to pressure them (or anyone) into caring for me. Just a huge no for me. This morning, I saw a group of moms with their toddlers getting ready for a jog and I involuntary said "Gross" to myself. I have nothing against those who want/have children and I represent them; however, I will not be joining them.

Millennial‘s and younger generations also understand that there is no real life/social security and we emotionally feel that. We know that it doesn’t matter how long we’ve been at a job, how good we are people get fired, laid off and companies go under every day. For those in LTR/marriage they understand that love along doesn’t mean you’ll make it to “death do you part” and people fall out of love with each other. & with the job insecurity also means there is no housing security. There’s little faith in the government social Safety net because we all know people fall through it all the time. There’s also climate change and social injustice, ect. It’s hard to bring a child into a world of endless uncertainty.

I’ve always thought that what’s next for me is having children. I’m 26 and have been married for 1 year with two little adorable fur babies 🐶 but just two days ago, I discovered the child free community! It made me realize that I have so much I still want to do before having children…or even no children at all! I love my life the way it is right now (although I’m very busy hustling with 3 jobs and still trying to find a work-life balance). I know parenting is EXTREMELY hard, probably harder than working my 3 jobs right now, and it’s a LIFETIME commitment. I grew up poor and my family struggled, my parents sacrificing so much for their children….So, I’m so afraid of not giving my future children the life they deserve or a life better than I had…I’m still living paycheck-to-paycheck so it’s tough, especially in this kind of economy. My mind is overwhelmed with such a decision. I’m the first of my siblings (1 girl, 5 brothers) to get married so my parents are expecting a grand child soon. Everyone around me are asking when the baby is coming…the social pressure is real. My husband and I love each other so much, but I just dropped this child-free bomb on him and I’m not sure he’s on board with the idea…

My parents had my siblings and I with an "air to the throne" mentality expecting us to carry on what they created and invested in during their adulthood. Going our own way in life was never an option since we had to have careers that related to theirs or they'd stop supporting us as parents causing us to detach from friends, relationships, other family members, and even careers we wanted, but weren't allowed to pursue. I feel like now they're realizing their mistake, but I'm in my 20s about to finish a college program I never wanted to start in the first place. Too little too late in my books. I don't want to make the same mistake by having kids and either doing the exact same thing or being too lenient trying to correct the mistake only to create even more problems. Best thing to do is to not risk it in the first place.

1. I've never wanted to be here and it's something I've known since I was 8. I'm here against my will - that is all kinds of wrong if you ask me, more than enough reason not to do it to someone else. Bringing a child into this world is something I find to be incredibly selfish, and yes I am indeed calling many people close to me and everyone else who's ever had a child selfish. (Antinatalist here) 2. Never wanted one. My niece and kids of my friends are more than enough for me. 3. Looking at the world, not just as it's been in my lifetime, but taking history into account as well, I don't like what I see. 4. People who want kids get so lost in that desire that they don't stop to think that all they are doing to them is to force into a life they can never fully enjoy (barely, imo) cause they have to work most of their lives away just so they can continue existing (I used that word and not "living" for a reason), if they even make it to retirement (given how things are going). 5. Being pregnant is some of the most disturbing things evolution has wrought upon us. Why anyone would want to do this is unthinkable (but to each their own). 6. Having to be here knowing the one thing I've wanted ever since I was 3 y.o. is the one thing I can never have makes things absolutely meaningless. Imagine knowing what you want to do with your life that early on, then you go to school, you learn stuff and realize it can never be, that no amount of hard work, luck, being in the right place, etc can ever get you there. I'm sure a lot of you can do more than imagine it. 7. Cost of living is insane these days, nothing new here. If I had to live on my own, I would barely make it to the next month (best case scenario), just having myself to take care of, zero extra people. Doubt I could even afford a pet for company. Realistically, I could only afford imaginary pets. In short, "This world is a prison." to quote a certain character from Wow.

I always believed that people choose to have children because they would make them happy, so calling someone selfish if (s)he chooses not to procreate makes no sense to me. This no-children trend is probably the result of individualism and that's OK - children are not for everyone. Ever thought of learning German and living in Germany? There is no tuition for you if you go to college. You can then start a life without being indebted too much. The catch, though, is that there are hardly any programs in English....

The education system is broken. I graduated university in 2008. Couldn’t find a job had to go back to school. In Vancouver a house is over 1 million so I left Vancouver. I still can’t afford a place because now the interest rate is rising. Now we have fertility issues now the fertility doctor wants thousands of dollars. I Don’t have any money!!! Got married at 30 now I am 40. Kids were jerks to me so I fell uncomfortable around kids. I’m an only child.🤷 I have a cat

yeah i was thinking the same, but my reason (i am a gen Z) is not about not having children, but i don't want to get married, it is because i have bad memories in my family (pa, ma, sists), trauma, mentality must strong if i someone wants to get married. but of course my family member doesn't allow my decision, the word said to me, you had to get married and have kids, period, Jesus will help. and my other reason, of course i want to focus on my career and study, continue to study abroad master degree and doctoral degree

Humans are aware of their own mortality. We all know that someday we're all going to die and never think or feel anything ever again. life is hell, everything is temporary and meaningless including our own existence bringing a child into this world is cruel. Make money not babies
@yvonnehorde10979 ай бұрын
And if you hate the way the world is right now, this might be a reason to HAVE children. With being a parent, you can influence the way the world will be like in the future. When you are not a parent, your influence on how the world will be like in the future fades with every year you stay alive... And we see in our countr,y Germany, where having fewer and fewer children can bring you. to: You do not have enough bus drivers, nurses, doctors even shop assistants. Everything is scarce because the boomers whined about having children and on the one hand said they could not have them because of the dangers of the cold war turning into a hot one and on the other hand, because of the problems of the environemnt, but mostly, because they wanted to realize themselves...

The downside is that I lost touch with my school friends when they had children, they don't have time for me and I spend a lot of time alone, I got one child free friend and that is basically it. Will I regret not having children?
@WifeWithoutKids2 жыл бұрын
Yes, sadly that is a reality of being childfree sometimes. Some friendships will change when people have kids. I've found that as the babies get older my friends have reached out more to reconnect. I'm not sure whether or not you will regret not having children. In my opinion an individual should have children because they really want to be a parent. We can feel left out because of our lack of kids, but I don't think that's a good enough reason to have them. Hopefully you will be able to make some new connections with people soon.

The less educated you are, the fewer prospects you have, the more children you tend to produce. This generation is generally much more informed than the past gens, and while we are being crushed under our parents inflation we actually do have more varied opportunities. There's a reason impoverished countries of the world churn out children while the more developed nations have seen population dip. Similar to how tigers have fewer babies than rabbits, the higher on the "food chain" you are, the less you're likely to breed.
