Mainly because their main purpose are to cut chunks of flesh away , instead of cutting straight through clean , although there are instances where Mikasa literally slices Porco’s leg clean and I don’t know about that , probably had to do with the fact that she’s an Ackermann and she’s stronger than 20 adult man combined (remember when she carried like 10 steel beams by herself , during the train track building scene)

AoT sword can be stored efficiently in the boxes beside their hips, they’re intended to break so they have to carry multiple. They also wouldn’t work if they were curved; consider the process of taking down a titan: you have to approach at an angle to prevent yourself from crashing into it (you have to have speed behind your slice or it won’t cut deep enough and you also wouldn’t want to sit on the back of a titan, so you have to do this). To cut deep enough at an angle you need a straight blade instead of a curved one, a curved blade would clear the nape (unless it was ridiculously long, which is logistically infeasible for transport and use) without killing the titan. A straight blade works perfectly in this case because the user is supposed to use their body mid flight to curve the path the swords take as they go through the nape, allowing them to exit the cut fluidly while also cutting as deep as possible with the swords length.

I'm like 90% sure the AOT makers had carpet cutters in mind when they designed those swords. And I'm also almost certain they went that direction to emphasize how sharp they are.
@DustyOrange2 жыл бұрын
I've only watched a bit of AOT and I honestly love the swords from a design perspective. I think its design was used to show its a simple blade to be easily mass produced, be sharp, and easily replaceable since it has quick releases. A lot like box cutters. If its heavy, I don't think it'll matter much since they probably wouldn't be swinging it with their arms, but rather with the momentum from their movement gear. And it being a heavy blade would probably be helpful because they're fighting titans and it'd help slice through with weight rather than pure sharpness. Kinda like a claymore?
@richardommundsen24172 жыл бұрын
The idea behind the Quick release and the Breakaway blade is to make sure that in the event the blade gets stuck in the titan either with a failed cut, or one that makes the titan fall, they can break away the blade and escape. "Why not just drop the sword tho and use a better quality blade where this is less likely to happen?" because the hilts of the blades are also what aims and shoots their grappling hooks. Dropping the blade = death All that said, they probably still should have been curved a little....

"Automatic edge alignment" and "sword is too heavy to swing often" : in AoT, "swings" are made via pulling the ENTIRE BODY with grappling hooks and gas-powered propulsion. You don't swing with your arms, you lock your arms then let the grappling hooks carry you through the cut. A katana takes too long to manufacture considering the high risk of breaking the blade for a misaligned "swing" that is required against a titan (there's no attacking from the ground, you'll get crushed)
@bragnir2 жыл бұрын
Gets worse, still: AOT swords are literally oversized box cutters with replaceable blades. The way they work is you cut with the tip of the blade, it breaks off when it's no longer perfectly sharp, then cut with the next tip until it's time to swap blades. Considering the Katana would be produced by the same society, forges and type of metal they had available for the AOT swords.... You'd get a grand total of 1-2 slices before the Katana is too worn down and slows your cuts into becoming titan chow.

1. The “automatic edge alignment” thing is a common misunderstanding. It only happens when you drop the blade, while gripping and swinging it you absolutely need to be able to align the edge yourself. Just watch a tameshigiri competition and you’ll see how much skill matters. 2. The blades in attack on titan are meant to be mass-producible and disposable. They don’t have access to large quantities of high-quality steel, so they make cheap box cutter blades that are sharp enough to do the job once.

I think one factor you need to consider is that most of the time, the characters aren’t slashing, their simply holding the blade in position while the fly past the the nape of the neck, slashing with body momentum rather then personal force. Additionally, the AoT swords were designed to be expendable/reusable (that’s why it looks like a long razor blade) so they are pretty flimsy, but much easier to make then a katana.
@42ndMoose2 жыл бұрын
also, since the aot blades are heavier, they could swing it with more momentum in the air, allowing for a more swift cut than how you would swing a katana while airborne. you wouldn't wanna slow down in front of a titan after a swing anyway. btw, the handle is also the 3dm controller.

AoT Blades are instantly detachable and sectionally serrated like boxcutters. This makes them very good for large, wide open gashes and an easy hit and run if the blade gets stuck
@theendersmirk58512 жыл бұрын
Counterpoint though: slashing attacks is the entire reason every curved blade ever was designed with a curve, not just the katana. A good cavalry saber also has one because you can get some nice slicing action by running the length of the blade down the surface you are cutting into. Now if you're only hitting with the tip, a pole arm might be a better go to, but for creatures this big, I know I'm not getting a kill blow first try, even if I was athletic enough to fight them. At least with a Katana or similar curved sword, a good slice might result in enough blood loss to hamper movement, or impair judgement, potentially giving me more opportunities to follow up.

The momentum of the swing (whole person swinging, I mean) is what carries the force needed in Attack On Titan. Titan skin blunts and breaks swords too quickly so the focus is on carrying as many blades as possible while not increasing weight and bulk too much. Speed of replacing the blade is important and the very tip provides most of the penetration, meaning the tip needs to strike first and rely on the shape of a neck for depth reached. Each blade has segments so you can snap the end off for a new sword-tip. It is designed precisely for its use
@fangiscool12 жыл бұрын
yeah, the katana was only made for slicing flesh to wound or impair light armored opponents opponents, then finish them off once they're weakened. Kind of a moot point in AoT. A little slice from a katana isn't going to get deep enough into a titan's knape to do anything. The entire purpose of a katana is moot in AoT.
@mrbackup9932 жыл бұрын
Im not an expert on AoT, so im not exactly sure how the blades work, but from what i understand the whole blade is interchangeable right? In that case a straight design has the advantage of being much easier to manufacture and to mass-produce, not to mention using the snapped blade parts to your advantage (maybe an alloy hard enough, but also brittle, so that the broken shards gets stuck inside the body better?)
@Nitro10002 жыл бұрын
@@fangiscool1 Katana can lob off limbs just fine but for AoT specifically the ability to slice actually helps make deeper cuts. A more strongly curved blade like a scimitar would also be ideal

@@mrbackup993 they need a perfect edge just to cut into titan flesh so after one attack run they have the option of snapping the blade like a box cutter to get a new point or switching the entire blade out. They carry multiple blades into battle in their scabbard.

@@indeed1023 Nathan said that most swords blunt too quickly to be effective against titan skin, which means that either A the alloy they're using is very complex and expensive but works against titan skin better or B the bladesand the design are crudely made to arm as many troops as possible , but they're mostly useless against giants. As an ignorant i'd gravitate towards the B option because it seems to make the most sense. Not that an A option wouldn't be able to work mind you, but there's no point in making a such a complex alloy and such a sharp blade if the design is so crude and the blades themselves break while hitting the target. At that point i'd have tried with either some kind of rapier or some sort of blunt weapon to hit their weak points.

The katana is a marvel for what they had to work with, but yeah.. pour some decent metal in a mold and sharpen it a smidge and you'll get a more reliable weapon. Katana are curved so that they can maximize cut potential so they don't outright shatter.
@ThatPinkOtter2 жыл бұрын
Different swords from different time periods made with different material made for different purposes. The comparison is apples and oranges, though if we're going to talk strictly about efficacy the longsword is more versatile whilst the Katana is more nimble... However I fail to see why you would want a Katana instead of a dagger/buckler and an arming sword/rapier. Good ol' hand and a half sword isn't nearly as easy to maneuver as a katana is, but it has more applications than a katana, the crossguard alone does a better job of both protecting you and being used as an effective weapon in it's own right. And none of that matters because polearm. So y'know, there's that. Both Euro sword snobs and katana weebs are incredibly annoying and frankly really, really stupid for continuing this idiotic conversation. It's like kindergartners arguing about who's dad would beat up who. Oh, and I will say that for record the traditional 'longsword' has an advantage simply because of it's reach over the katana... Which is why the spear/polearm is the most dominant medieval battlefield weapon in pretty much every region. That doesn't mean both aren't formidable weapons, it just means that like it or not when you're literally fighting for your life (Though living by Bushido often meant complete disregard for your life) if you can keep people AWAY from you and threaten them at the same time it's probably better. Samurai wielding a Katana instead of their usual main armaments are akin to that of suicide bombers, give a meth head martial artist some speed, coke and a sword then point them at someone and tell 'em they got the goods and you have a samurai. Knights in plate with swords-- Or more likely poleaxes are more akin to the Leopard 2A7 of today. Both are terrifying, but for different reasons.
@EskChan19 Жыл бұрын
@@ThatPinkOtter Little correction: Spears were the main force of all armies because swords were hella expensive and took ages to master, while a spear was just a pointy stick you could give to any peasant. Obviously in medieval history there were many effective sword techniques formulated and taught that were aimed at overcoming the reach of a polearm of any sort (and once you did they were helpless). In the hands of a well trained swordsman, the average soldier with a spear wouldn't have been a big challenge.

Or the fact that “edge alignment” isn’t even an advantage, it’s just dropping a katana down on an opponent which rarely happens. Straight blades are probably even better than katanas because even if it may not cut as well, it’s a lot more useful in actual combat
@Spicii9896 Жыл бұрын
@@JuicyBites Personally a HUGE fan of Sasuke's grass cutter in Naruto too Curved blades were more used by samurai because of the slashing being more important but for stealth straight blades are better because you can stab much more easily and make a quick getaway. @JuicyBites Жыл бұрын
@@Spicii9896 exactly, katanas were rendered obselete when the longsword was around because they could not penetrate armour, which straight blades can do.
@Hecatolite_11 ай бұрын
@JuicyBites well, technically, katanas were around until ww1. Also, they weren't rendered obsolete by longswords because longswords were used in europe and katanas were used in japan. Another thing is that straight swords can't penetrate plate armor either (chainmail, perhaps a particularly strong thrust would go through. Butted mail; it would probably go through, but then again, most swords would(including curved ones)). Even if you could penetrate armor, it wouldn't be a good idea since it'll get stuck and then you'll die to your opponent. They would be, in fact, better at targetting seams and joints in the armor, but it would be better and easier to just bring a blunt force weapon or a polearm. Or do mordhau strikes.
