The Austrians wanted to join Germany really hard, but the allies of WW1 forbid them to do so. This is why a lot of Austrians celebrated when the Nazis took Austria. It was a libération from the suffering that the allies caused through their decrees after WW1. The unification was forbidden long before Hitler...
@maxthommesen93154 жыл бұрын
Befor that the stuff with Prussia and the second empire. The reason simply was that Prussia did not want them to join and after 1866 the decisions were made in Potsdam, not in Vienna. Autria was effectivly the ruling german power for hundrets of years at that point. Austria bending under prussian rule was simply an unthinkable scenario. So it would be Germany under austrian leadership or germany without austria. Those were the two options. Annexing the german speaking parts of austria (which was much more that just modern austria) simply was not within prussias power. There is no such thing as a total victory in the 19th century. For example France was already preparing an intervention on the austrian side.

@@Ajunta No, it wasnt. It was mentioned in the 15. century already and the king called roman-german king. You can also find many celebraties such as Mozart talking about being proud germans, way before the unification in 1871.
@Ajunta3 жыл бұрын
@@peterlustig6888 You are mistaking the word "german" as it is used today with how the word was used in different ways over the centuries. The "german" kingdom: In medieval times the official title was "rex romanorum" with the unofficial title "rex in germania" in several variants sometimes used. Northern italians sometimes used "rex teutonicorum" as a mockery. Until the late medieval times the word "german" in all its varients only refered to the historic region the romans called "germania" and being subject to the crown in this historic region. There wasn't one "german" people yet a nation this word was used for. From the 17th century on the word "german" refered to someone who speaks a germanic dialect and understands standard-german, an artificial language that became popular and spread through the germanic realms because of Martin Luthers bible translation. When people of this time period called themselves "german" it was a way to say that german is their native language. You can see that in Mozarts case and the context in which he was using the word. He was refering to his native language. German was seen as a primitive and tuneless language but Mozart wanted to try to compose an opera in his native tongue. "German" back in the day wasn't one people or a nation as peoples identity was mainly shaped by 3 other things than language: 1. The very local culture and traditions (most people didn't left their hometown their whole live) 2. The local government/monarch that ruled directly over them (duke, archbishop, king etc.) 3. Most importently: religion. (catholic, protestant) When the idea of a "german" nation first emerged as a theory in upper class circles and intellectuals in the very late 18th/early 19th century, scolars spoke about two different and independent "german" cultures shaped over the centuries by southern catholicism and northern protestantism. "german" as this word is used today, is only the nation shaped under prussian protestant hegenomy, years of culturewar against southern catholic german identity and all the events of the 20th century.
@peterlustig68883 жыл бұрын
@@Ajunta You just dont understand the difference between ethnicity and nationality. For the first one, a common language is one of the main criterias. Mozart literally talks about being a son of the proud german nation. I dont know why people get so defensive when talking about this. Must be an intrinsic hatred for germany and thus, the wish to reduce its history and overall importance to a bare minimum. Objectivly spoken, the HRE definetly was the predecessor of the modern unified german states. When people try to redeem its empire character, they always refer to its last centuries, when it was already falling apart into many smaller states. The history of the german nation began with the seperation of the western frankish empire after the death of Karl the great.

Short answer: Allied victors forbade Austria from joining Germany, just as they did after World War I. Why even forbid it if the Austrians didn't want it? Of course, Austrians wanted it after WWI, and even called their newly formed state German-Austria. Austrians always considered themselves Germans, and it was the Austrian Habsburgs who started calling the Holy Roman Empire the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Just because the Allied occupiers have tried to rewrite history, doesn't change what Austrians are, fellow Germans forever.

Short Answer : Germany was divided in to several states. The two strongest german States were Prussia and Austria. Prussia was able to unite all other German States into "Germany". Prussia excluded deliberately Austria out, because they feared power struggle within the new German State if they include Austria in. After many Centuries Austrians build an own national identity. The same as Germans within Germany. Before this Event Austrians saw themselves as Germans aswell (since they were and are Germans by blood)
@dreisaum99165 жыл бұрын
Austrians saw themselfs as germans up until 1945. But even before the elites tried to force a "regional national identity" to the austrians but most of its people didn't really think they weren't part of the german nation.
@kgius74342 жыл бұрын
Debateable, times after WW1 were very desperate. Election in Austria itself never indicated a strong support for german nationality. In contrast to the bohemian germans who always were very nationalistic germans.

Why isn't Austria a part of Germany? Well, it's easier for Austria to start two world wars (admittedly the second one was not started by Austria but by an Austrian) and blame it entirely on Germany than having to take the blame themselves. :D It would also be more difficult for Austria to deny Hitler was Austrian but claim Mozart was.

The multinational identity was true in pretty much the same way for Prussia. This was not the reason that austria did not join the second empire.
@ifzwischendurch5 жыл бұрын
An important aspect is that a strong Austrian identity emerged after the Second World War. Today Austria would never unite with Germany. As you rightly said at the beginning, the difference is similar to Canada and the USA.

I don't know if you know the history of this but NZ is actually listed in Australia's constitution as a state, they were invited to join but the NZ Maori people had many more political rights that Indigenous Australians still don't. Germany was a feudal kingdom in the High Middle Ages which seems to be forgotten quity easily, just looking at a map of the late HRE. The idea of a unified Germany wasn't a novelty. Germany has always kinda existed at least nominally. It's just that contrary to other countries like France which became more centralized after the middle ages Germany went the other way and became more and more decentralized leading to territorial states becoming more sovereign and powerful.
@Quintinohthree4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Kingdom of Germany was the result of East Francia conquering most of what remained of Middle Francia in the north, after the Kingdoms of Italy and Burgundy had split of. Together with those kingdoms it eventually formed the HRE, to which Bohemia would become a subservient Kingdom, and the Emperors would remain Kings of the Germans so long as there was an HRE.
