Fantastic footage of the bees, the blooms, and you even snuck in some gorgeous bird clips. Brava! As is so often your trademark, the narration takes this vid to the next level. Fascinating detail in the observations and descriptions, and your cleverly entertaining comparisons had me giggling in delight. You rock … shaking it up like ice in the blender without any of that jarring noise😉

Now here is a compliment worth getting! Thank you. I appreciate how throughly you appreciated this video. I busted butt to produce a quality piece full of solid info and was proud to post it, but I have to admit that it landed with a thud--not that many views. Oh well, the low viewership doesn't change what you and I think of it, right? Nor does it change how much pleasure I got from immersing myself in footage of those lovely blooms. Thanks again.

Wow, lots I didn’t know about bees! To me there is something very soothing about the drone of bumblebees in my garden on a lazy summer day. They are amusing to watch too. Thanks for another lesson in nature! Hope you are doing well.

I'm doing dandy, Carol, thanks for asking. The poet William Butler Yeats said he longed to "live alone in a bee-loud glade." That notion has its appeal, doesn't it?

Thank you for this vid on my very favorite creatures! Love love love bees, especially bumblebees. I spend all summer trying to get really good close up pics, and I've just per chance gotten some pretty good in flight pics. The first time I did, I was surprised that they were tilted awkwardly in the air and there was no graceful positioning of their legs. I guess I expected some graceful posture, like a ballerina, but they looked like they'd just hurled themselves in the air. Now I understand why!
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME2 жыл бұрын
I identify with your description of the bee tilted awkwardly in the air--know the pose well! And it's a pleasure to know that someone who's seen that and wondered about it has watched the movie and welcomed the explanation. Thanks for commenting.

What, you mean to say you have other activities in life that take priority over my channel?!!! Time to revise your priorities, I say. 😉 Okay, that's not gonna happen. But I'm glad you dropped by and enjoyed the lizards mating and the bees flying. One suggestion, though: check out the movie showing hummingbirds fighting in super slomo. It explains why they fight so much more than other birds.

Well hello again, Cynthia. Nice to hear from you. I'm happy that you're exploring the channel and especially pleased that you took a look at this video. It hasn't had a ton of views, but I think it offers interesting info. (I did make one mistake, though, in saying that they must not have much in the neck vertebrae department. They don't have ANY because they have an exoskeleton.) I'm having a blast making these movies, and I hope you'll keep browsing here and commenting occasionally.

Fascinating Jo. I admire your curiosity and incredible research. At first I thought the wobbling was due to their eyes adjusting and those puny wings. Any species that can dance out a location is way more creative in their movements but I never would have guessed those wings create so much force. Amazing!! Thanks for sharing the beauty of your images, excellent information and parade balloon reference ; ). I will stare at bumble bees more closely now than I ever did which honestly wasn't much. I was mostly interested with their cute pollen baskets. Best regards, Cathy

I thought of you when I included the tethered balloon parade reference, Cathy--knew you'd appreciate it since you always film the Thanksgiving Day Parade. I dug hard for the info in this vid and thought it was interesting stuff. I'm glad you agree. But the film would have been flat without the colorful footage. I especially got a kick out of that shot of a bee climbing out of a Royal Gentian bloom like a genie emerging from a lamp. Thanks for spending some of your time watching and commenting. Oh, and by the way, I'm currently working on a movie about what I call the Fab Four: nuthatches, chickadees, titmice, and Downy woodpeckers. So I especially admired your chickadee footage. It's beautiful.

Have you ever seen a California Dig Beetle in flight? It is hilarious. I haven't seen any bumble bees out here, bees yes....but haven't come across a bumble for some time. Enjoyed your video as always.

I had not heard of those beetles, so I looked them up - or tried to. Maybe they have other names too? I would like to see one in flight. I've got a shot in this Friday's movie of a beetle taking off. Cute! As for this movie, it's never gotten a whole lot of views. I worked very hard to dig out the info about their bumbling flight, so I wish more people would see it. On the other hand, I made a really boneheaded mistake in saying that they must not have many vertebrae in their necks. Duh! They have NO vertebrae in their necks; they have exoskeletons. So in that respect, I'm glad that not many people have watched it. One of these days I'm going to take this movie down, correct that error, and repost it.(but I'm glad you enjoyed it even with its flaw.)

What a coincidence. I was going through some old footage a couple of days ago and found four shots of a beetle. I don't know whether it's a fig eater or a green June beetle. The head was bright green, and the wings were brown.

Yes, I do get my own film. At the moment, I am sitting on a bench in a wildlife area, while the camera is sitting 30 yards away trained on the tree where redheaded woodpeckers are digging a nest. Except for when I have technical difficulties, I love every part of the process. I am a retired English teacher, which is why I like to write scripts and why you think I’m poetic. This little movie about why bees bumble around hasn’t gotten all that many views, but I am very fond of it - I found all the info I learned about the subject intriguing.

If not, then the Friday after that.

We all do that, take expressions we grew up with without giving them thought. As a retired English teacher, I frequently find myself wondering about this one or that. Yesterday, it occurred to me to ask myself why we say someone "turned the tables" on someone else. Explain me that one, will you? Anyway, I'm happy to see you watched this movie from a year ago. I'm inordinately proud of it because digging up the info about bee flight was no easy task. Besides, it was fun to come up with all those metaphors for the bee's bumbling flight, like riding an escalator and moving like a bobblehead in the rear window of a car. Thanks for commenting.
