In this video I take a look at Ben Simmons and his ineffective jumpshot form. Despite Simmons' elite play as a rookie and his likely position as the NBA Rookie of the Year, he has not been able to show an ability to shoot the ball. In fact, his free throws have become a problem for him as he is only shooting 55% from the line. And, despite his size, skill and speed, he can still struggle to score because he is not even remotely threatening as a shot-maker beyond 10 feet.

You can clearly see his natural and unconscious inclination to line up his right hip with the basket when he shoots as opposed to his left which corresponds to his chosen shooting hand. Also, he doesn't articulate his leg sway through his core, so his legs swing out at an eccentric angle and result in a fading-type motion. The obvious conclusion is that he doesn't own his shot, he's just doing things he's seen others do/what he was told. But if he could understand the theory behind the mechanics, perhaps he could improve dramatically.

A handiness doesn’t determine consistency. I throw a football right handed, write right handed and my right hand is even my best hand to get up an effective post hook. I’ve shot Left handed since the first day I picked up a basketball. I had a hired shooting mentor and instructor who told me to leave my hand alone because it takes a lot of sculpting and a lot of mental work to change hands. If you have the correct hand placement, finger weight distribution on the ball, have the correct base, a good release point and a good philosophy on shooting then you can have a deadly jumper. His problem has a lot to do with his hitch and possibly his mental view on shooting. Guys can take years to rebuild a jumpshot correctly, he will likely do that. He probably has more strength in his right and more of a soft feel on his left hand finger tips. I’d agree that being right handed and shooting left is weird ( not hugely uncommon ) , I don’t believe that correlated to not having a consistent jump shot

Excellent analysis! Ben seems to be diligently working on his jump shot. He has all the physical attributes to be successful. I believe he will wind up being a better than average shooter. If he can become a decent mid-range shooter, knock down a couple 3's a game while averaging around 30 points per game... He will be in the conversation for League MVP.

If you look at his left handed shot, it's basically set up better for the right hand then the left. He has his left elbow flaring out with his left hand on the side of the ball, and his right elbow is better positioned under the ball than the left. All he'd have to do is get the release down, and turn to his right side instead of left.

Simmons hand is off to the side of the ball and his elbow is out b/c he doesn't have his shooting hip turned and aligned to the rim with his elbow over it. He needs to learn to turn more as he elevates and get better alignment with the rim. Proper Shooting technique (catch and shoot) 1. Hop into the catch 2. catch with one hand then bring other to it as you bring the ball in (this allows for the 1st hand that catches the ball to be centered on the ball then your other hand comes to it naturally in your preferred shooting hand position - catching with 2 hands like a football will not always provide perfect hand position) 3. dip ball as you land 4. spring back up off the floor as if you were in jump-rope rhythm 5. Turn your shooting hip and elbow so they align with the rim as you bring the ball up 6. jump towards the rim as to bring your shooting shoulder up and at the rim while your off shoulder relaxes and drifts back 7. step 6 will cause your body to lean back while your feet sweep forward (sweep and sway) 8. As you release watch the flight of the ball 9. when you land, land in front of where you started your shot, in many cases you'll have to step backwards to not fall

@r.forrestblount9222

KingFish, you are right. Elbow over knee helps in alignment and coming down in the same place contibutes to the repeatability of the shot. Or as Scot likes to say, it decreases "the range of error" as it relates to body motion. I feel the main issue is his fading and drifting on his shot. Correct that and then the knee/elbow alignment can really do its proper work.

To be fair, he used a sample of one shot for his analysis. If you watch tape on Simmons’ shooting (a small sample regardless), he’s inconsistent with his technique, which I suppose adds more inconsistencies in making his shots. It’s almost like he’s trying different mechanics each time, hasn’t developed his technique to the point where he can instinctively pull it off with just muscle memory or lacks confidence in pulling it off that he fudges it based upon pressure.

The energy that creates the flight of the ball should start in the toes and flow off the finger tips in one fluid motion. Not having aligned hand placement can contribute to a delayed release because the shot is more complex and requires more aiming by the brain. The shot must flow simply so there is minimal effort in aiming and keeping the movement consistent. Good shooters almost always know when a shot is going in because of how it feels coming of the finger tips. When the shot is in rhythm it has a specific feel as it leaves the hand. I like to imagine the ball is a rocket. The launch starts with the energy my toes generate as they push off the ground. As I rise in the air my hands and shoulders are getting aligned with the basket. By the time I’m at the apex of my jump I’m flicking the ball off my finger tips, trying to shoot with my wrist and fingers as much as possible. I use my legs to generate almost all the energy for the shot so my arms move as little as possible, allowing my hand to do the precise aiming. Imagining the ball as a launching rocket helps me find the rhythm of the energy transferring from my body into the ball. I can feel when the ball launches in rhythm and when it’s out of rhythm. If I have to use a lot of shoulder and arm muscles then my rocket is not launching properly.

He is just like Lebron, Lebron shoots with his right but he prefer dribbling with his left therefore he mostly drives to the left. He actually said that himself aswell. Lebron also write with his left. This is what is called a semi ambidextrous or cross dominance which mean he use one of his hand to do some tasks and the other to do other tasks. So I think Simmons is also a semi ambidextrous that s why he feels more comfortable shooting with his left and dribble with his right and do the other stuff. I know some people that are pretty much like this including me I do everything with my left such as writing, eating etc and when it comes to sports I prefer my right .I shoot the ball with my right hand dribble with my left and layup with my left, when I play soccer I kick with my right and dribble with my left aswell. So I think Lebron James and Ben Simmons are semi ambidextrous.

He is getting most energy transfer by his jump as the ball matches the speed of his body thrusting up. He isn’t moving the ball down as he jumps up - he in fact thrusts it up above his head. The ball never stops moving upwards or dips down. His wrist still pushes the ball up as his centre of gravity comes down. Arguably -as a ratio considering arm power to jump power-- he’s getting MORE power from his jump vs his arm release than Curry ect. Zero energy from his jump and all the work has to be done by the arms? No that’s totally wrong. It’s possible he jumps so powerfully that he needs late release to not overshoot the basket. That could be the case for most late release shooters in the pros. Agree about the hand positioning part - good interesting video!

What ever his dominant eye is he should shoot with that arm...I did that in the NRA when I was young...I do everything single thing righty except shooting a gun at targets...and without question it works...to find out your dominant eye you just need to look at something as if you are trying to block out light with your hands cupped to your face...leaving only a small opening to look at something through..do it for both eyes separately..if its your dominant eye your head will be looking directly at what you are looking a...if its your weak eye your head will appear that you are looking at 1oclock when looking at 12 o'clock with your non dominant eye...do it in front of a mirror by putting up something to look at and you will see that it only looks like you are looking at that something when doing it with your dominant eye...I guarentee that this is what Ben is dealing but doesn't know

Nice video and critiquing! I would add a 3rd crucial point that is noticeable in this video, though I’ve not watched closely to see if this is a one-off or just a part of his shot. The placement of his feet as he gathers seems to resemble more of a right-handed shot set up; as in his right foot seems slightly in front of his left. This could potentially cause a balance issue, which is somewhat noticeable in the twisting of his lower half as he jumps..

Actually there are several videos of Ben Simmons shooting with his right hand. it was a flawless shot ( free throws ) and went in consecutive times. I didn't mean it says he is a great free throw shooter because we all know he isnt. The thing is, he has been using his wrong hand his whole life. Getting used to something doesn't mean its right. its like saying because you are used to sleeping 4 hours it is correct when we all know the right amount of sleep is 6-8 hours. The story says that his dad put his hand on his left hand ( because its harder to guard left handers, lets face it. ) thus he went on and continued it. The problem is he is born a right hander and not really that ambidextrous unlike LBJ who can use both hands quite well.

Same case as the story of Nadal. David Simmons put the ball in left hand of Ben when he was a boy and learned him to shoot with left hand and plays like left hander. That's why he can make lay up with both hands. I'm left handed and his drives are like lefthanded player. Near the rim he prefers to score with right hand because that is his dominant hand. Everything is his life he does with right hand ( eats, writes, exc. ). He uses his left hand only in basketball. He is not ambidextrous, he is right handed player learned to shoot with wrong hand!!! I saw him to shoot free throws with his right hand and the mechanic of the shot was much more better and softer. He just doesn't feel comfortable to shoot with left hand.

This is my mom’s account but what i want to say is hat it’s not about the handedness i was right handed until 3rd grade when i turned 4th grade i shot left and i was so consistent and it feels so much comfortbale shooting with it. But i the only. Left hand thing that i do in. Basketball is left i dribble right floaters right dunk right throw right everything right but im also used to with my left but if its like clutch time I’ll use my rightt hand all the time except for shooting

Im right handed but shoot with my left hand. I find out that if i use my right hand to shoot, the shooting form is much better

Left handed are faster then right and they often have better reflexes you can be right handed and left footed also....

John wall dunks left and his shot percentages have been going up every year. Lebron writes and does everything else with his left and he is shooting over 40 percent from 3 this season. Ben simmons will adjust and his and could become a 3pt threat if he works hard enough.

So are you saying he really is a right handed? But LeBron is left handed but shoots with right hand and actually improved his shooting.

Correction... if you're a right handed person, that means you're dominant on the left side of your brain, and vice versa

I have the same situation than Ben Simmons im originally right handed but i shot with my left hand and im a 3 pointer specialist on my team but i have a good looking shooting form so i think Simmons need to have a new jumpshot to be one of the best players in the nba

The apex isn’t make or break by any means. Some guy called Michael Jordan more often than not had a late release to catch contesting defenders off guard and he was still deadly from mid range. Good video otherwise

Thank god I am also left handed but i shoot with my right just like you and Lebron James. I am very very good at shooting the ball but i always find it strange that i am using my non dominant hand. Because i am playing my first year and i used to throw with both hands and i just somehow got to right handed shooting with good form.

I don’t think he will go too far in today’s nba without a jumper. Even LeBron had to develop a jumper and that is years ago. Nowadays, he and Giannis won’t have too much treat without a jumper. Defenders just have to guard their drive and leave them open to shoot.
