Why Billionaires and White Collar Criminals Love Donald Trump | The Coffee Klatch with Robert Reich

Welcome back to our Saturday coffee klatch, where Heather and I review the highs and lows of the week.
Today we look at the role of big money in the presidential races of both parties. And with Tax Day looming, we also ask what’s in store when the Trump tax cuts (mostly for the wealthy and big corporations) run out next year? What sort of tax reforms are possible if Biden is reelected and Democrats take over both houses of Congress? Our guest today, appropriately, is tax expert Solana Rice.
And, of course, we talk about the new Beyoncé album (how could we not?).
Please grab a cup, pull up a chair, and join us. (And take our poll.)

I consider paying my taxes part of my civic and patriotic duty. That said, I resent that wealthy people and corporations pay a lower percentage of taxes on their income than I do. That is uncivic, unpatriotic, unfair, and just plain wrong, just plain exploitive.

I'm so glad you and your guest discussed taxes. A lot of Americans do not understand the history of taxation in this country. I began my CPA career in 1982, the Regan tax cut years. We dissolved retirement plans because of tax cuts to corporations. The Republicans cut taxes every time they got in office, except for Pappy Bush, who famously said "No new Taxes" and lost his 2nd term because he didn't come through. The Trump tax cuts hurt us in so many ways by increasing our deficit spending. With these Trump tax cuts, I saw the taxes increase for the lower middle class, including the retired folks and my small corporations, while my clients making $200000 or more were getting significant tax cuts. Tax law reflects American's values, and we do not value the middle class, the poor, or the elderly.

The US federal income tax code is a dysfunctional mess and should be completely overhauled. If just a couple of basic and logical principles were applied, it could be made simpler, fairer, more productive, etc. First, all sources of income should be taxed the same .... wages, capital gains, interest income, business profits, etc. After all, all income spends the same and thus there is no logical reason to give preferential tax treatment to any source of income. Second, all entities and individuals should be taxed under exactly the same rules. Namely a "corporate or profits tax" for everyone. That would include individuals, corporations, partnerships, sole owners, charities, non-profits, trusts, etc. Make the tax rules the same for everyone.

SSI is a hot mess. I had similar talks with many of our colleagues in California: We paid more taxes over night. In the year when the Trumper-tax came into power, my company has stricken all bonuses for us. So on my 1040 I had 10K lower total income. But in lieu of 2K reimbursement the year before, to my shock I was charged $2k for a lower income! Foremost, interest on our home was no longer tax deductible. We went to H&R block to check the veracity, and they told us, they are flooded by similar complaints.

Many-many eons ago my grandfather was a millionaire and a big influence on me. Not necessarily as an influence in my ability to amass vast wealth but in my ability to appreciate the need to help promote the general welfare of all in our society. This was back when we had a fictional program on our little TV sets where people’s lives were changed after being gifted a million dollar check. The character’s lives would be changed, hopefully for the better. Such wealth as this certainly made my grandfather a better man. His attitude was that the way to benefit the needy was to tax fortunate people like himself who could afford it. I wonder what he would think now that his wealth in today’s economy could almost make the payment for a garage in California. Well times change so let’s make our lives better for all. Today, if grandfather was still around he would still be giving with an open hand.

Most major roads and bridge projects are financed by local State and Federal funding. Typically the projects are done by securing Federal grant money. We should clean up the tax code and get rid of all the tax preferences that help weathy and corporations, such as capital gains tax, lower taxes on qualified divideds, and fix the tax bracelets. Give more child credits and more earned income tax credits to the working class. Tax wages for social security far above the current limit of 168,600. Maybe compensation above 168,600 should have to pay a larger percentage rather than none.

what is really needed is investment into the middle as The Biden Administration has been doing. There is never any need to borrow money, the only real debt is the investment deficit. Biden is addressing this with considerable success.

guys , it's ok to put the camera on a mount and leave it alone... Edit: If it's a DSLR, grab a good wide angle zoom with minimal barrel distortion. Something like a 24mm or 35mm if there's enough space. These days, you could get away with buying two old DSLRs really cheaply. The Nikon D3500 are supported by the webcam drivers and both can be hooked up to OBS easily.

There is a bill introduced by Angie Craig and just reintroduced, called “ you earned it , you keep it” bill. Reagan started taxing our seniors social security and we demand not to be double taxed. Anyone making under 24, 000 can’t afford to pay taxes. People making 24-36k should only pay 10%.. 2023 tax brackets are 11k or less you still have to pay 10%. That’s bs. Between 11,000-44,725 we pay additional 12% on that amount. 45k-95k we pay 22% taxes on that amount. 95-182k we pay 24% on that amount. Under 24k, we can’t afford taxes if we want to live, eat, get medicine, gasoline and pay a utility bill. Ban taxes on our social security. Reagan wanted seniors to suffer and die so rich people could pay nothing

I couldn’t stop looking at the CROISSANT & waffle. No croissant sits on a table in front of me un-eaten! 😂 This was a great post. Beyoncé’s country music is nice. I just about came unglued with happiness at the Miley Cyrus duet. Love their beautiful voices. I tend to like singers that can actually sing without an insane amount of autotune. Eliminating the wealth gap & bridging the racial wealth gap is a hope I keep close. That wealth tax is necessary. Thank you for mentioning the bridge workers as our local paper decided to talk about the safety of the Miss-Lou bridge rather than have the decency to honor the dead. Although our state auditor in Mississippi is a Republican, he has represented all of us well by bringing to light & prosecuting rich & wealthy celebrities who were stealing from our state funds. It takes intelligence & bravery to make them pay & he has & continues to do so. One of our state politicians (if you can call her that) is trying to sue him for literally doing his job properly. We voted him right back into office too. First Republican I’ve ever voted for in Mississippi (I’m a registered Mississippi Democrat). I still can’t believe it but here we are. No politician is perfect but I’ve learned not all republicans are to hate filled nutters trying to take over their party either.

We need to be empathic and respect the rights of those individuals that have a greed disability. In the same way that we respect the rights of the LGBTQ community and those with physical disabilities. It is a disability that we are born with and we can not simply choose not to be greedy. I have suffered from greed my entire life. It does lead to excess amount of wealth but many of us just need to be loved.

If a disproportionate amount of our taxes didn't go to the military industrial complex, I think most people wouldn't mind paying taxes. But religious institutions along with the rich need to pay taxes, I mean real taxes.
