I’m black and my entire very large extended family is from the South. I never had Black Eye Peas until I was an adult because all of my older relatives hated them and refused to eat them. Our cousin Spicey says black eye peas make her windpipe hurt. 😂. I tried them, and it’s a no for me too. Might be genetic aversion. In my family we eat purple hull peas. Some of my relatives have/had farms and would give my grandmother entire sacks of peas. I have fond memories of many days my grandmother had me and my cousins shelling peas, shucking corn and so on. ❤.
