First off. Mad love to my South American brothers and sisters. 2nd everything they touch turns to gold. Skating, surfing, race car driving, even bullriding and of course football (soccer). They dominate, love that a 3rd world country with no infrastructure for surfing produces the best surfers. Me being Peruvian, having the history and geography love to see my brothers and sisters from South America dominate. Thank you for posting this vid. Its only going up for all. Obrigado Brazil!

Sports that don’t require huge amounts of technology are far easier for “lesser countries” (budget wise) to compete and excel. It’s why exhibition/demonstration sports at the olympics often see more evenly distributed medals until the larger countries start funding those sports and they gain both a technical and training advantage that produces better results. Another factor is the emergence of heroes that can drive the popularity of the sport in said area. What you’re seeing is the first gen of Brazilians coming of age who grew up with Brazilian surfers as heroes. It’s no different than when a city gets a pro sports team for the first time and one generation later you will start to see more top level athletes in that sport emerge from that area. This is just anecdotal observations over the years, specifically with sports teams and how they influence youth and that generational effect is quite obvious.
@ignaciogama36534 жыл бұрын
That's true, well said man. I grew up in Rio, I'm a little older then those guys today in tour (Medina, Ítalo, Dória), but in my school, every one of the boys used to surf, much because of my dad's generation, that were those guys he mentioned in the doc, the first ones that went to Hawaii, Califa, in the late 70's, mid 80's. We grew up hearing about Fábio Gouveia, Bocão, Rico, Padaratz... And now, the next generation Man... Woooww...

That's bullshit, football doesn't require huge amounts of tech, still, a lot of "lesser countries" sucks at it...
@tbz15514 жыл бұрын
Fleisbester .. bad example, Brazil, Uruguay, Columbia compete on par with economic powerhouses. The more a sport costs the less likely you see athletes from poorer countries excel. Not to mention you missed the point where I mentioned it’s more noticeable with newer or emerging sports.
@tbz15514 жыл бұрын
Fleisbester ... try re-reading it, then try understanding it, then try debating the actual points I made. Then.. maybe I’ll play along.

T BZ Brazil and Uruguay aren’t good examples either, Uruguay has a very high HDI, and Brazil is the 8th largest economy. Look at Nigeria and Pakistan, both countries have a huge population, still, these countries sucks at football.

The key ingriedient of brazillian dominance is passion. We have a culture where we are passionate about the lifestyle we choose to live for. It brings intensity, we like to sharpen our skills, each detail, because we have passion for what we are doing.
