As a Dane, but also named: "Finn", I like riding round on my Brompton here in Denmark. Also on the hilly and rocky island of Bornholm in the Baltic, which has several serpentine roads going up and - down, so all my 6 gears are needed, when going up, and down! And my indeed, well functioning Brompton brakes also are able to stop me, when going down again, before passing some cattle prevention tubes across the road, at intervals, and from very high speeds! I was insecure at first, but my Brompton never let me down! 😄

Nice to get message from other Finn 😁. Oulu, where I live, is at coast, so we have quite flat here. I have 12% reduced gears and to me - elderly man - it fits well. No need for speed any more. I have to say you are brave when riding over the cattle tubing, it's quite shaky for Brompton's 16 inch wheels. On the other hand: when you ride fast enough, it may not feel so bumpy. 🚴

Stumbled upon this video just now and all I have to say is good health to you and have great times riding! This is coming from another Finn riding a C-line explore. It's a fantastic utility bike you can take anywhere, especially handy in commuting with trains. I even use it to take my kid to daycare on a trailer that is attached to the bike. Never had such fun riding a "regular" non-MTB bike.

Hi Reissunpilaaja, thanks for watching. After getting home from hospital after Covid infection, X-ray pictures and breathing tests showed that I have about 60% capacity of my normal breathing. I love my Brompton M6R, bought second hand a number of years ago, but much better with a few mods.... Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. Brooks B67 saddle. MKS FD-7 pedals. Larger roller wheels on the rack. Monkii Cage bottle carrier. Ergon GP3 grips...... And the best mod... lowering the gearing from 50T chainring to 44T. I have the toolkit that fits in the frame, but don't use the glueless patches that come with it, they are useless. It gets used on roads, trails, and canal towpaths, from the house, or chucked on the back seat of my Fiat Panda, and to be honest, it probably gets a bit more hammer than it was designed for ...... Awesome piece of engineering.
@finn111
@finn111 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, thanks for watching. My Brompton is with high handlebar (H) and also with 44T chainring. Bottle carrier and Ergon grips are also on my shopping list, eazy wheels are already waiting to be assembled. Maybe eazy wheel extender is needed as well? My next "project" is to make the ride smoother, due to some pain in my back. So I changed Brooks saddle to softer one, now looking for softer suspension block. I have also searched for saddle post with suspension, but diameter of Brompton telescopic seat post is so weird (26.6mm), that I need to do some research of solutions. What's the benefit of MKS FD-7 pedals compared to original ones? Have a good summer and happy rides ! Pekka
@66oggy
@66oggy 2 жыл бұрын
@@finn111 To be honest the MKS pedals were not a mod, the original folding pedal broke, and I got the MKS set much cheaper at the time than the Brompton pedals, so I thought I would try them. They seem to be more comfy as they are slightly bigger, fantastically engineered, but heavy.

Hello Finn, thank you very much for this beautiful video and your heartwarming honest words. For the same reasons as you, I ordered a C-Line 6 speed, 44er Ritzel because I live in the hills of Bavaria before the alps. For me it was a little bit heavy to carry and get it the 30 steps up/down of our trainstation or high up to the back of my car. I returned it and felt sad about that. Yesterday my new order arrived: a Brompton P-line! It is about 2kg less in weight and that you can feel immediately. The 4 gears will surely be not enough to climb all the hills in my surrounding, but I want to make little tours farer away and sightseeing-tours in small old cities and villages which I wouldn‘t do per pedes ……
@finn111
@finn111 Жыл бұрын
HI Julmoon, thanks for watching and your encouraging words. You are right, my full-steel, 6 speed, hight handlebar with rear rack and dynamo hub lights is the heaviest Brompton. I hope you enjoy riding in new places and combine Brompton with other transportation. I made my first mini-tour with my Brompton two weeks ago: I had tent, sleeping bag, gas stove and everything with me. I decided to stay my first tent-night in camping place, just in case I face some problems. Everything went well and I returned next day with train, just like I had planned. Unfortunately my backbone did not like to ride on high tire pressure (which creates shocks and wibration to my back) and now I need some time to recover. Have great time and rides with your superlight Brompton. Pekka, Cycling Finn

Wow, you seem to have really enjoyed riding. I chose racing green color to my bike, I think it's so British (I have seen it in some old, classic sport cars). Have you done overnight tours as well, or is it all from commuting? My latest video in my channel is a review of my backpack and touring setup. I think I need to change Schwalbe winter tires soon to be able to continue riding in winter (as shown in my winter video). I wish you more happy miles with your Brompton!
@platypushatstand
@platypushatstand Жыл бұрын
@@finn111 No overnight tours, just leisure riding (I brought mine to commute, but that proved to be unviable, so I leisure ride as I love it), a friend of mine commuted 4,000 miles a year (home-rail station-work & back again). If you fit the studded Schwalbe tyres, you’ll need to put some protective cover on the underside of the main frame as when folded the studs will damage the paint (I’ve watched a few reviews) plus you can buy replacement studs as some can work loose especially on mixed surfaces (part snow part tarmac, though Finland has ‘proper’ snow, unlike the UK). Happy cycling!

Hi Pekka, congratulations about your health situation now. 3 months ago I bougth one C explored after years looking for one. So expensive, but now , i'm glad with the rigth decision. I have using a old Orbea flow with adaptations for touring, but so big for daily use, transport on car up the metro station and keep at work place. Deligted for the easy folding, and right with you to be transport on little cars trunks and buses. Always with you. For me is very very confortable, C explorer H handlebar. The best buy ever for me. Using daily, after 3 months many people asking for "her", courious. Just bought an extra aluminium rack and two little wheels for it. So. The two wheels supported when folding, in my opinion, are too small, must be change, but up today the own saddle is ok for me. Here in Malaga ( South of Spain) bikes can be on public transport, locals trains, buses and metro with no extra price. Just on buses intercities, in some lines charge an extra price. On AVE (high velocity trains , long distances) the best options is like you done, a Brompton. Suscribed, many thanks for beauty vid. Waiting for the next finnish video . Best regards bromptoners from Spain. Rafa.

Hello Sir. I have just found your channel and subscribed to it. Your videos are a joy to watch, and English spoken well, with a Finnish accent, is very easy on the ear. I have just watched your winter evening ride and would like to ask your opinion. Soon I will be living near Kursu in Salla. The nearest amenities are 20km away in Joutsijärvi. The first 6km from my house is a dirt road. The roads are regularly ploughed through the winter of course. Do you think it is a practical proposition to ride a Brompton with studded tyres from my house to Joutsijärvi and back through the winter? Is it easy enough to change the tyres for the summer season? I am a similar age to your good self by the way. Kind regards.

Hi Thanks for the comments. You ask whether it’s feasible to use Brompton in winter with winter tires in Lapland, partly unpaved road for 20km one way to nearest services (shops etc). The Brompton is at its best in the city and on tarmac / paved road. I don't recommend it for the use you describe. Brompton's small, 6-7 bars inflated tires transmit all vibrations through and they also like to dig into longitudinal grooves, which sometimes makes driving on winter roads a bit slithering. Winter riding is OK on well-maintained bike paths. A better option would be a wide tire mountain bike, ideal would be an electrically assisted fat bike with decent studded tires. Even without electric assistance, the fat bike runs unbelievably smoothly on winter roads, I once got to try out a neighbor's bike. I had to make many trips for winter filming, when I noticed that the GoPro 5 in the chest harness was shaking so that the video was unusable. I had to shoot the shots again with one hand driving and a small digital camera on a gimbal in the other hand. Changing studded tires to a Brompton is a laborious procedure, the frame of a Schwalbe winter tire is rigid and requires skill, finger strength and good tire tools. The winter tires on my 28 inch are much easier to change. It's great that you ride a bike, it's fun even in winter with the right equipment and attitude. Happy continuation of autumn and beginning of winter to you. Cycling Finn

Hello again Sir. This time I shall write in English for the sake of swiftness and variety. Thank you for your excellent and well-taken advice. I may still invest in a Brompton, but not as my all-season local transport. I will now look closely at a number of fat bike possibilities. As a Brompton man, I think you will love the work of Ben Cooper, proprietor of Kinetic Cycles in Glasgow. He specialises in custom Brompton conversions and ships anywhere in the world. If you want a 14-speed Rohloff hub gearbox, Gates belt drive, Magura disc brakes, 20" wheels, a SON dynamo lighting kit, Pendix electric drive conversion, bigger castor wheels on the rear carrier or any number of other upgrades, he is your man (I have no conflict of interest here). I look forward to your next video, and wish you many more happy years of riding in beautiful Finland. YT, Jim.

Thanks for your hint about Kinetic Cycles. I have noticed that tuning and upgrading Brompton can be more or less endless story 😁 and in some cases need good financial resources. I have done some minor upgrades for the usability, maybe I share some of them later. I translated my first answer to English (mainly with Google translator) to better serve followers of my channel. I found this option behind three dots next to heart-icon near Answer button. I wish you could translate your original comment to English as well.

You can see my current saddle in my other videos, either the Fjallraven backpack or DIY mirror modification.

Have you ever had difficulty getting your Brompton into places such as coffee shops or restaurants? A cafe employee recently instructed me to leave my folded bike outside the shop, which is located in front of a bus stop near the crowded market. I didn't bring a bicycle lock, and the coffee shop didn't have a secure bicycle parking area. I'm living in Thailand. Is it OK, for example, to bring a folded bike into a Starbucks and leave it at my seat?
@finn111
@finn111 Жыл бұрын
As I live in Finland, where Bromptons are rare, I have seldom faced issues of getting my Brompton in with me. Once when I was going to dentist, they asked me to leave the folded bike outside. I then used the cable lock, which I always carry on my bike, you can see it in spiral on top of the frame in video 2:10 and 3:40 minutes. If I leave bike out, I try to find cafe or restaurant where I can see my bike through the window. I understand the coffee shop staff's reluctancse to bring bike in, if there are a lot of people and limited space (and if there is not natural space for folded bike e.g. under your table). I think it should be OK to bring a bag with you to coffee shop? Have you considered carrying Ikea Dimpa or similar bag with you and bring the bike into restaurant in the bag? Dimpa takes very little space when empty, it fits into backpack or can be attached to saddle post with velcro strap or similar. I wish you great rides. Cycling Finn

I prefer questions in English. Regarding your question whether Brompton fits into lockers of supermarkets or grocery stores, I haven not tested. I think it won't fit. They are usually meant for small bags only. I never needed to put Brompton into locker. If buy as much I can carry on front bag, I have either taken the folded bike inside shopping cart or locked the bike with heavy duty cable lock outside store to some steel structure. I try to pick a place which is under surveillance of security cameras or it can be seen from windows of cafe etc.

@finn111
@finn111 Жыл бұрын
Hi Graham, thanks for watching and comments. I think the cover can be used both ways, but goes better like I have shown. It's then possible to carry the bike from the saddle if you open the zipper a bit. See Brompton's short video about this kzbin.infou0Qe3cXCOZQ?feature=share My cover has zipper only on one side. My wife has older Brompton and her cover is roomier and zipper is longer, going on two sides. To my opinion it fits better on bike, the zipper starts from top, near saddle, continuing to front of bike. I want to buy the older one if I ever see it for sale. I have two reasons for that: 1) I have kickstand and 2) I have turned handlebars a bit closer to myself, which makes folded bike a bit wider. I wish you safe rides. While we have snow on the ground now, please have a look at my winter cycling video in my channel kzbin.info/www/bejne/bni9mHmke72Ujtk Best Regards: Pekka, Cycling Finn

Together with my wife and grand daughter we have driven by car to some other town and ridden around by bikes, visiting museums and other points of interest. @@finn111 The Brompton is the best folding bike. But I cycle on a folding recumbent trike. For the public transport-bike option (multi modal officially) I use a Gekko 26 FX, by the brand HP Velotechnik. The Gekko is the most comfortable bike...trike I ever rode. No more saddle, neck, wrist or knee pain. Also very stable on 3 wheels, so no falling. Shorter braking distance and 2 mirrors for good rear visibility. And I carry a lot of luggage on the Gekko. The Gekko has drawbacks too: even folded it is still huge, but floor space is low (60 x 35 cm). 22 kilos is heavy compared to the Brompton. At the train station I can push the Gekko to the platform, at the platform I fold it. I can roll the Gekko around on its 2 suitcase wheels. And I carry it for 5 meters into the train. Bonus; Dutch train stations are equipped with elevators. Also I do not have to pay extra for my folded trike.

@@mardiffv.8775 , thanks for watching and sharing your Gekko experiences. It's a bit different approach to cycling, but for sure it has a lot of benefits, like you listed. I looked at Gekko's www-pages and like Brompton, the bike is very smartly designed. So, I'll keep this in mind for the future. I just returned from my first fly-ride-fly weekend trip. Together with my wife we packed Bromptons into carrying bags, took them to Oulu airport (in trunk of my Toyota Corolla) and flew to Helsinki for the weekend (Oulu-Helsinki distance is 600 km). Check-in bag cost less than 10 euros each. At Helsinki airport we unfolded bikes and continued with local train and subway; they both have cars for bicycles, children's trolleys etc. We had very nice weekend to meet our friends and relatives and ride around. We also bought Brompton bags (one smaller and one bigger) for my wife, she did not have any so far. I wish good and safe rides to you, we share the common joy of riding on bikes, no matter how many wheels we have. Pekka, Cycling Finn

I've been riding this bike for about a month kzbin.infoUgkxwC0IIeIomGQVeBWg-kKJaToZkLEFIA2W and a half now and I think it's fantastic. It helps me get to work on time every day since I'm able to fit it inside of public transportation rush hour. The price is great too, people are always shocked when they ask me how much I paid for the fold up and I tell them "200". It's easy to fold and installation when it ships is insanely easy. All you have to install when the bike arrives is one foot pedal, everything else is done for you. I do recommend you carry some sort of wrench to tighten any loose screws on the handle bar and seat whenever they get a little bit loose. Other than that I think it's a fantastic bike. Easily fits in the home, can fit inside a car trunk and can even fit in subway rush hour.
Should you get a Brompton? Four year opinion.
