I always find this sudden surprise over the nature of "wokeness" from academics to be amazing. The most prominent, loud, and obviously totalitarian intellectual phenomenon of the last century emerges in your backyard over the course of decades and yet it STILL totally blindsides you? You would think that such a failure would re-adjust ones world-view (or Bayesian priors) but it never seems to result in anything like this.
