Why buy an OMNY card?

Although the OMNY card is not widely available just yet, I’ve been using this thing for the last 7 months now and it has proven to be a far better than the MetroCard when riding the New York subway. So in this video, we are going to talk about the reasons to even use the OMNY card, why you should have an OMNY account even without an OMNY card, where to buy an OMNY card, and other things that are good to know.

I picked up my OMNY card at the local check cashing place, but when you say in your video "if for some reason you don't want to leave a paper trail...." what do you mean by that? Why does the mta and by the government, have to know every time i go to work or take a bus ten blocks to do shopping? this is not china! maybe you millennials don't think it's a big deal that your every move is being tracked but not everyone appreciates that, and don't give me the whole, if your not doing anything wrong you shouldn't be worried BS either!

The biggest pro I like the fact that all forms of NY transportation is in one place, BUT where they messed up is not having Unlimited Weekly or Monthly. That fare cap system is dumb, just stick with the conviniece of Unlimited weekly and monthly.

I agree that they should keep the unlimiteds, but fare capping is for people who cannot afford the entire cost of the unlimited upfront. So this lets everyone enjoy the same benefit even if all they can do is $2.75 at a time.

They should have a feature where you can add your OMNY card to your digital wallet (Apple Wallet, etc), so that way you can reload it with whatever credit card you want or cash, and still take advantage of fare capping. And that way you have two ways of using the same payment method, could be cool. And you'd probably be able to reload it form your phone too.

OMNY uses licensed technology from TfL's Oyster card system and for some reason TfL has refused to let Oysters be added to mobile wallets, so I'm guessing OMNY will not either, unless TfL is forced to.

I got an OMNY card a little while ago (bought at a CVS) with the intention staying financially organized. The 33$ fare capping feature was also a great idea, but I would always run into trouble tapping to enter a station once I've reached the 33$ limit. By the end of the week, once I reached that limit, the card would become "deactivated" since I only loaded exactly 33$ to begin with. Since the tap reader couldn't read a deactivated card, it wouldn't unlock the turnstile.... If anyone else has encountered this same problem, please reply!

Would it work better if you had one additional fare loaded onto your card? Maybe it's something with the zero balance blocking the unlimited fares after the cap? Have you gotten it to work better?

I didn't mention in the video. For cash-users, you don't have to register an OMNY card in order to use it. You can simply reload it with cash and use it like a gift card.

You can call up omny customer service enter the card number info from the back of the card and you can hear your omny balance of your card.

What about the Select Bus Service? Where I live there is the regular bus service, and the Select Bus Service. There are these machines like mini-Metrocard machines where you put in your Metrocard, and you get a paper ticket for the Select Bus. Those machines don't have OMNY readers on them. Will they have to retrofit the machines with OMNY readers? Or will the Select Bus just have an OMNY reader on it that you have to tap when you get on?

Great video Thea - Fantastic to see NYC moving into the 21st century with the OMNI. We've had a similar service here in Sydney (Called OPAL) for about 10 years now. Am I to gather the fare capping is now a permanent feature because your last video on this topic suggested capping was on a 4 month trail to June 2022. Also, If you are a visitor to NYC can you get a $5 refund on the card deposit when you leave town. In London with their Oyster card system travellers can hand back the card at the end of a stay to get the deposit back.

The fare capping system is an injustice to a passenger who wants to start using OMNY during the middle of the week. MTA should allow unlimited weekly and monthly passes to be added to your OMNY account.

You forgot to mention: what if you lose it? what measures do you have to go through when you lose it? Is there a feature that prevents others from using your card? Can you cancel the auto-fill feature right away, or must you wait a few hours?

You can cancel the card online. There's a way to dispute charges on your account, but I've never tried it.

Thanks Thea for sharing the invisible book and letting us know about the OMNY card. You and I talked briefly before that some people don't like to use credit cards to get on the subway because of paper trail. It's really though to keep yourself 100% invisible. If there's a murder investigation, law enforcement can ask cell phone carriers to find out where people's cell phone signals were to determine their locations. There're surveillance cameras everywhere. It's def a double edge sword.

If you buy the OMNY card at a train station that has the machines you can buy the card for $1 and put a min of $5.80 on the card. For the first time you will start off paying $6.80. That's just to get stated.

Just to share a little bit more info about the OMNY vs Metro cards section of your video….when the Metro card expires at the end of the one year, it can be automatically replaced for FREE while reloading the card at the Metro card machines. I used OMNY when I was travelling in the USA this year & spent 6 days staying in NYC, I had both a good and bad experience. Using the card was great but reloading the card with credit was problematic. When I tried to reload at a Walgreens in Lower Manhattan, they couldn’t do it even thought that location was on OMNY’s list. Even worse, when I had inadvertently overdrawn my OMNY by 25 cents, my card was suspended. I tried to load value in person but couldn’t because of the suspension. Trying again after creating an account, the system rejected my foreign debit/credit cards, throwing an “unexpected error” when I tried reloading online. Calling the next morning when the customer services reopened, they also could not restore my card using my NZL Visa cards. The rep I was talking to did pass my case up the chain however it took weeks for receive a response. I ended up having to use my credit card to pay for transit, incurring exchange fees. I would advice any visitors to the city to simply load $35 on the card at purchase. Also, IMO, the MTA should update their readers’ software to show a balance when a card is tapped and flash amber when an OMNY card’s balance drops below $5. The readers have a fully functional LCD, it should be simple to show more info then “GO” with some cheap new software

Sorry to hear that! It's probably why they are not selling OMNY cards as widely yet, and still have MetroCards at stations. They're still figuring out all these problems. I agree that there should be a balance on the screen just like the MetroCard. Or at least a warning if the card is running low. I think MetroCard is still the way to go for tourists.

​@@olgapredger5488I did research getting a prepaid debit card before traveling to the US from Walmart or somewhere else but it appeared overly complicated compared to withdrawing Cash from an ATM, even with the extra fee. Besides, tapping my foreign credit card only costs an additional NZL$0.08 per journey so it wasn't a massive deal/amount but it was super annoying & frustrating, especially since, as I stated, when I tried to correct my innocent mistake, I was thwarted. Plus, IIRC, I was one or two trips away from the fare cap.

Correct me, OMNY is a standalone account, like MetroCard at 5 times the original price, and can be linked to a checking or savings account? They are getting rid of the MetroCard and introducing the OMNY card for flexibility between various [transport] systems? Heya 👋 Yes, the OMNY card is basically the MetroCard's replacement. But unlike the MetroCard, you can link it to a checking/savings or credit card and you can even set up auto-refill too. It will only work where there are OMNY readers (right now that's just the NYC subway and buses). Not sure when the full roll out is but I'm sure it will be all over the news once it's in stations.

Nice to know that. A question: how does it work, if you want to transfer to the bus. Does it charge twice? (I was heading to the ariport, so I took first the metro and paid with my credit card on the OMNY machine, but then I wanted to transfer to the bus but I must explain the busdriver the situation, so he let me to get in without paying the double... If the transfer was within 2 hours, you can tap again and it won't charge you as long as you use the same credit card.

Quite curious why MTA deployed readers in buses and subway station before deploying machiens in subway station to sell/reload cards. Also, find it very strange that you can't buy the card on credit card since once these become available via machines, it is a given that people will purchase them with credit card in same transaction as the loading of fares on it. Any indication on when all fare types such as monthly unlimited etc will be available on it? or is MTA moving to only individual fares and the automatic unlimited $33 per week ?

I was thinking of getting a fill able card to separate my trips to work ($22 a month) from my non work trips done on my debit card. So the OMNY shown up just in time. I got the last one at my local Walgreens and put $22 for March on it.

Nice! Just make sure your balance doesn't go to $0. Otherwise the card will deactivate and you'll have to call customer service. It happened to me. To avoid this I set up auto-reload when the balance goes below $10 (or any amount you set).

@@Neville60001 The card is for travel to work. Telework agreement is two days in office per biweekly payperiod. I chose Fridays. So it's $22 per month. I did add an extra $6.00 so it would stay active until I add the monthly $22 to it. Be glad when it can be refilled at the subways like the Metrocards instead of going to a Check Cashing Center or Walgreens to refill it. I registered my debit card last year. So it's used for non work travel.

One thing to mention about fare capping, is that it is only good for a seven day period starting on Monday, ending the following Sunday. So ppl who take advantage of the existing 7-day unlimited ride MetroCard with have to adjust their travel/spending to confirm to this OMNY policy

Overseas visitors using foreign credit cards may incur an additional small transaction fee every time they tap on using the OMNY reader. This is not an issue if they're using a pre-paid travelcard, but the additional credit card fees can add up if they use the subway and buses frequently. If they don't have a travelcard, the OMNY card is probably the better option and even the regular or unlimited Metrocards (while they're still available) are cheaper, depending how long they are visiting and the likely frequency of public transit use. We recently visited New York for a bit over 5 weeks and the 30 and 7 day Metrocards were really convenient and a cost-effective way of getting around.

Fare capping sucks. Not everyone starts taking public transportation on Mondays. Also, what about the 30-day unlimited? Being charged $33 weekly you spend more than on a 30-day unlimited metrocard. FIX THAT! I NEED THE 30-day UNLIMITED for the sane price of a metrocard. Omny 4 weeks (28 days) = $33x4= $132 Then 2 days is $5.5x2= $11 Total $132+$11= $143 30-day Unlimited Metrocard Total $127 With Omny You End Up Paying… $16 EXTRA (per month if you commute daily)

I went all over manhattan looking for one in December. All the convenience stores listed online no longer carried them so I ended up with a Metrocard. As a traveller from Canada, when I use my phone or credit card to tap I get charged exchange on every tap so I prefer to buy a subway card with cash that I already paid exchange on prior to arriving in the states. Coming back in July so hoping for better luck finding one.

I feel the OMNY card is still in beta so things could still change with it. But they're making it clear that the MetroCard will be completely phased out.

Many felt that the paper farecards and passes suited tourists better, but they were eventually phased out, and tourists now have an extra souvenir when they purchase a Smartrip.

Question: I’m aware that after 12 uses the rest of your trips are free. If I get an OMNY card and pay for it with one CC and my dad uses it…and I continue using my digital wallet to pay for my own rides using the same CC…so both our rides add up and in essence both of us get free rides after we combined swiped 12 times??? I’ve been googling and can’t find an answer.

MetroCard only can connect between Subway and PATH. Omny cannot do that, can it?

Did you get an Amex Blue Cash Preferred card? They give you 3% cash back for public transportation. Hope that they'd give your OMNY reload 3% back too. There's a signup bonus as well. They waive your first year's annual fee.

Hi there! I can confirm that OMNY refills are considered a transit expense. So if you do use that card, you will get the 3% cash back.

It's $2.75, the same as a MetroCard.

I’m so glad you made a video on OMNY. I do use an OMNY card for the express bus but unfortunately it will not let me check my card balance whenever I use the card. I do have a OMNY account

Maybe in the future, stations will have machines that will let you tap to check to check your balance the way they do the MetroCard.

I saw a comment here that mentioned if you call the number on back of omny card, you can check your balance by phone.

What if people don’t have bank accounts, or debit/credit cards, or access to the internet? How will they put cash onto the omny cards if there are no machines?

Until they have machines at stations, you can only load the card with cash at convenience stores that sell them. Kinda like reloading a gift card.

Right now as a tourist, you will be better off with a MetroCard because OMNY cards are not easily available to buy. Or you can just use your debit/credit card directly.

If you dont arrive on a monday.....forget the omny.... use a metro card
