Camcoders are for events and certain situations where a mirrorless or DSLR wouldn't do well. They have batteries that last for hours upon hours, built in ND filters, Zoom lens built-in, easier to operate without going into menus, better onboard audio, lots of better, bigger connections and great auto focus,. Not to mention an ergonomic design that fits the hand better for shooting at great lengths wether in your hand or on a tripod. But yeah, I hardley ever even use mine. It's all about my GH5s.
@hbp_ Жыл бұрын
You'll quite often see those in ENG situations nowadays instead of the bulky B4 monsters. Although, I have recently seen mirrorless cameras too. In either case, no dedicated camera op and thus the picture is often crap and from a weird angle.

Most of those types of camcorders, still have sensors that are too small for low lights in an auditorium and they priced too high. Mostly I see them used by local news reporters, not Indy film makers or content creators. They aren't good enough for that nor are they cheap enough for parents filming their kids sporting or band/choir events. Most just use cellphones. I do stream live events and I've found PTZ cams and the ATEM mini pro ISO fit the bill nicely. Going ISO gives you the option to give them a better edit later. I wish BMD would give us something like that that at least records in 4K. Instead we are stuck with having to upscale in Resolve or getting one of the larger, less portable consoles.
@hbp_ Жыл бұрын
@@WolfsHaven they have small sensor for easier focusing and historical reasons because aligning 3 big chips was harder. Interestingly B4 camcorders with 2/3" sensors are exactly what are usually used in auditoriums, courtrooms, reality TV shows, etc. (Although these are camcorders with interchangeable lenses) Those seem to work just fine in low light. Whereas most cameras with super 35 and larger sensors struggle. So it's not like the sensor size automatically translates to better low light performance, even if the physics backs that in theory. I don't think sensor size has anything to do with this in practice, it's just that those sensors sacrifice all other specs for lowlight performance and global shutter at 50 fps. DR of 8 stops or less is perfectly fine for ENG.
@WolfsHaven Жыл бұрын
@@hbp_ I've never bought the higher end camcorders, at their price point you're into the entry level DSLR and now mirrorless camera range. Those give you much better preformance than the sub $1000 now sub $500 camcorders. You just can't do long recordings. In which case I just used Clean HDMI from DSLRs to a computer and let it record. After the ATEM mini pro came out I started switching to PTZ cameras. I've been getting excellent preformance from those and have been able to run up to 4 cameras with one person. When I need to add something handheld it's the old DSLRs wirelessly to the ATEM. The ATEM mini pro and extreme with ISO have been a godsend for streaming and recording events. More so since I started using PTZ cams. Last year for audio I picked up the Zoom L8 that gets me isolated recordings for the mics. Which then I feed the stereo mix to the ATEM for the live feed and room. Now that I have a budget for equipment I don't see me switching to camcorders now. None the less at the consumer and prosumer level camcorders just don't get the image necessary for those starting out.

have bought 18 Panasonic AG-CX350s for class/student use at a university faculty. As well as range, zoom control is great - eg steady zoom at any speed. Streaming and networking options good, so via wifi can capture a conference with 3 cameras, no cables, and switch cameras with Vmix on a laptop. Partly the choice of camcorders is to reduce replacement costs and student liability. the cameras are good for journalism, documentary, video, sports media - film students after first year use Ursas or new Sony FX6's with cine lenses.

I work in the broadcast space, we use camcorders quite often because the form factor is easy and familiar for ENG style field reporting but more importantly for events. Oftentimes we are upwards of 100 ft away so we need a camera with a lengthy zoom in a portable form factor combined with the 12G SDI connectors because HDMI ideally only travels about 25 ft without integrity issues whereas SDI can go almost 1000’ with 3G and about 350’ with 12G. The camcorder industry hasn’t really innovated since their pre COVID releases. My personal favorite is the Canon XF605 since menu and nearly feature wise it’s on parity with the Canon C series and sometimes we mix and match them on set depending on what is going on

This was before HD was the standard, but even then, the quality was good enough for film festivals and we had a lot of fun just living the process of doing something we were told couldn't be done on a near zero budget. Then along came the Flip camera that shot in 720p and I used it to make a couple of television promos for ABC and everyone thought the quality was superior to our massive Panasonic ENG cameras that cost into the $$$$... content over camera always wins.

JVC GY-LS300 This is a Micro Four Thirds mount with a Super35 (aps-c) 4k sensor. It has 120fps 1080p. $1000 USD would be a pretty good used price. Panasonic AF100 old-school 2mp 1080p cam might be the cam you were asking for in previous vids. There was a paid firmware update to get 1080 60p, but you can't purchase it anymore, so the camera you get either has or not. If you can live without 60p, this is probably the camera that matches some of the past videos on CC, about wanting an actual 1080 sensor. You can easily find it for under $500 USD.

My favourite eBayers are the folks who list items as being “untested” but when you look at their other listings they’re selling other items that would enable them to tests the supposedly “untested” item. Basically, they dropped their $1000 lens in a septic tank, wiped it down, before listing it on eBay and feigning ignorance of its condition. See it all the time with cameras and lenses.
@robstammers7149 Жыл бұрын
Yeh, I see this all the time on ebay. The other thing you often see is "selling as seen, not working" and the asking price is rediculously high, who wants to buy a dud camera anyway, a repairer maybe, that's about it. Another 2 annoyances, camera for sale, that's fine, the seller puts only one photo for you to peruse, usually underexposed or out of focus, the other annoying thing, how many times have you seen cameras for sale, you find just what you want, there are several photos for you to peruse, but the camera is filthy/dirty/dusty, why can't some sellers clean the camera for sale. All these annoyances are unacceptable. I could go on, but it won't change anything. Regards Rob.

Very good for events to have the zoom controller on your tripod arm and a Manfrotto fluid head. With a mirror-less camera you need to use two hands one on the tripod and one on the lens zoom. Though with quite narrow capabilities. No optical zoom, bad low light capabilities, aggressive processing with samsung built in camera app, horrible noise in 3rd party camera app, and less than ideal noise reduction in that app as well. Unfortunately instead video has migrated to still cameras and with every $500 camera you have to buy $1,000 of video extras or pay a stiff premium for their endless development. My Panasonic G80 released in 2016 and still on sale does just fine. If you are not in to Ks, bit rates, codecs and vlogs buying the recent stuff seems rather a waste of money.

I really do miss decent camcorders at decent prices. I remember using them in the VHS days but the last one I bought was the HF R700. They absolutely suck in low light but other than that they were decent. Unfortunately you had to pay an arm and a leg for better cameras. The original ZV-1 gave us close to camcorder preformance but in the wrong housing, plus a couple other minor flaws. My biggest gripe is not enough telephoto (I'm not a vloger). I must have got lucky as I rarely have the over heating problem. However it's fairly well rounded camera for content creators. Just not the vlogers it was marketed to. The mark ii doesn't hit the mark for me at all. Nobody ever made a budget interchangeable lens camcorder. We've been forced to use photo cameras that have recording time limits. The few affordable camcorders that have come out are for home movies at best. That market has been satisfied by cellphones. It's really sad. Content creators and Indy film makers have been neglected for decades and we have been forced to make due since the Canon Rebel T3i. Which as far as I'm concerned was the first viable option for small and entry level film makers. Even before content creation really became a thing. We got some improvements along the way but the next big advancement for us didn't come till the Panasonic GH 5. That's when content creators really started to become a thing. Finally a decent semi affordable camera. Still not a true replacement for a camcorder but it worked.

I switched to phone because of this, I wish I would have never bought Canon rebel t6 and Panasonic gh4! (Panasonic broke, don't try to fix!😢) money pits but Canon still works,lol. But it was a life lesson😊.
