As an Olympus shooter, I have been looking for a second camera to do event work. The image doesn't need to be super cinematic. It just needs to look decent, keep everything in focus, and run for a long time. This is where camcorders really shine. And the 1" type sensor means you can get some shallow depth of field, unlike the older 1/4" or 1/3" sensors on camcorders before. With phase-detect autofocus, it does feel like a sweet spot. I have even been looking at some older 1080p camcorders with those really small sensors because you can find them dirt cheap on eBay ($300 or less), and some of the prosumer models are halfway decent. Again, not trying to make a Hollywood picture but capture, say, a wedding.

Some of them are photo cameras also, though... Anyways, as a broadcast and news cameraman, let me tell you that the best camera, sorry camcorder, for me is (in that segment, not counting those big 450s or 750s) z280 with... 1/2 inch sensor (albeit 3 of them). Oh, and... when shooting news I really don't care for the Toneh that much. What I do care about is variable ND, f2 lens at all focal lenghts, xlr inputs, streaming capabilities, sdi connectors, and the zoom range that allows me to shoot quite the distance from the angry police or rioters or flying stones. And, even the F12 sensitivity isn't that bad either...

The VX2100 and DVX100B and GL2 all had magic in them that the newest camcorders just don't seem to have. Even the Canon HV40, an HDV soccer mom camera, had the magic. It was lost when we went full HD. My old XF100 kinda has it, usability wise at least, but the image isn't as great as I remember it being. I have been waiting for a Sony camcorder update, 4K 10 bit with S-Cinetone to match my FX6 and FX3, but the Z200 isn't it. The footage I have seen is just so noisy, noisier than my XF605, and that's saying something. I'll stick with the XF605 for now, even though it isn't a Sony like my other cameras, and hope that a Z280 update will at least have a less noisy image for ENG work. I'm also more interested in a Z90V / VX2100 sized camcorder, and also a Z280 sized camcorder, than I am a Z190 sided camcorder, so I don't know what that means for Sony, but I just don't love this new camera. Also the image looks kinda fake sometimes... if that makes any sense.

Camcorders are great for capturing live performances, religious services, and things that require smooth zooming where the top priority is capturing the event seamlessly; not so much for art or fun. They are utilitarian, and you can get good images. I have the ZV-E1 and the old C100Mkii somewhere in a drawer, but for a church service or a business presentation, my aging G60/XA55 fits the bill or any pro camcorder is the obvious pick if you don’t have multiple cams and Operators. Horses for courses! Now why camcorders haven’t been retooled to better compete with mirrorless; haven’t a clue. Seems you could have both if you have the pocketbook and can stand the weight and size of the lens for the focal ranges needed.

I still don't get the equivalency stuff all the way, so f/2.8 on a 1" sensor only lets enough light in to compare to the exposure of f/7.1 of full frame, but then IRL my experience doesn't match that. The iso and shutter values don't really change, background blur does(but that's about perspective and distance to subject too), but the amount of light doesn't and I just end up lost. In fact I can often use lower ISO on my 1" compact than my Full Frame camera, because I can have the whole subject in focus at f/1.8 where on my full frame I have to stop down to f/3.5 or so.

It completely depends on the type of work you do and the budget of the production. If you're a vlogger, a small mirrorless with a wide angle lens on a small gimbal is perfect. "Camcorder" types are perfect for news, sports broadcast, corporate conferences, sometimes documentary R&G... anything where you value the flexibility of a massive zoom range over the blurriest possible background, because you have to get the shot RIGHT NOW and you don't have 3 minutes to futz about switching lenses. I use camcorder types along with FX6's and an FX3. If the client has the budget, such as NFL or World Cup, then you can take cinema bodies and rig them on massive box lenses to get the best cinema quality along with the yuge zoom range, but most of us don't have $200,000 to spend on a single camera set up.

Multicam and tv production. Small venues, documentaries, corporate. Like, it ain’t a camera for youtubers. If you want bokeh, go longer, go wide open. Ya ain’t getting it at 24mm 🤷

@@sbozinovic Yawn. Maybe don't take that so literally... Obviously I could find a few scenarios where a terrible mirrorless camera might be worse. Even then, side by side most people would choose the crappy mirrorless with a fast lens.

camcorder with a long body, 12 MP full frame sensor that runs 4k using the extra MP for digital stab so you do not get random cropping from using that, if I had the money I would get them to make it

Going to show my ignorance. Why not a 2 inch sensor. Or is 1 inch all we need to perform in…
@JoeSzilagyАй бұрын
I've looked at specs of other big, expensive camcorders and they all seen to have 1-inch sensors. There must be some logical reason, though I don't know enough about the tech side of those. I have to wonder though, if it has anything to do with the huge lenses that they use which would let in more light, maybe eliminating the need for a larger sensor? Just a guess.
