Why can't Power BI connect to my cloud source???

You have a cloud data source like Azure SQL Database. Why can't Power BI connect to it? They are both in the cloud! Adam shows you some things to consider and options you have!

I would consider it a security vulnerability to enable "Allow Azure services and resources to access this server" because that applies to all Azure customers.

Our organization will not allow us to enable all Azure Services to connect to our Azure SQL database. Can you do a video on how you can utilize service tags within the firewall rules to restrict access to PowerBi services only?

I have an issue where I'm trying to use Excel Power Platform connection to Power BI service. The problem I have is that when I do this, it cannot see the workspace I created. Only stuff that is in "My workspace". We are trying to use excel to create a pivot table with the semantic model that consists of SQL server and Business Central data. I ended up having to use "My workspace" to deploy to Prod which is not ideal.

My architecture is based on push datasets. So, the new data is being pushed every 15 minutes to Power BI via APIs. And its sad that clients often cannot fully benefit from that data: calculated columns not allowed, merging with other data sources is not possible. It would be great to be able to connect a Power BI dataset with another Push Datasets.

Thanks Adam, this video really cleared things. We're currently working with a VNET gateway to get PowerBI to work with the data in our Azure SQL Database. But now we want to combine that with some data from SharePoint lists. In Power BI Desktop this works perfectly, but when publishing it to Power BI Services it is expecting to retrieve the SharePoint data from the VNET Gateways aswell. Is this even possible or should we work with an on premisse gateway over here?

most organizations already have an (API) Gateway in place... can you use TyK gateway or Kong Gateway to connect Power BI with your datasource? Or is that only possible with the Power BI Gateway.

Thanks for the insightful video!!! I created a report which retrieves data from MySQL db. I managed to refresh the data in PowerBI Service by creating a Personal gateway, but when I am off the refresh schedules I've created do not run. I am getting "Your data gateway is offline"... Are there alternatives? :/

Hi Adam, very informative video as always. What is the best options to enable cross-tenant power bi data refresh as VNet data gateway will not work in that scenario? VNet data gateway currently only works if the Azure data source and PowerBi are on the same tenant unfortunately and will not work across the regions as well. I am working on a project where in we need to schedule data refresh from one organization's Azure SQL DB to one of thier clients Power Bi (B2B scenario). Our client (one with azure sql DB) does not have PowerBi and do not want to buy Power Bi lisence, hence in-place data sharing is not an option. In such scenario, what is the best option? Thank you in advance for your help.

in case we have to pass parameters for snowflake through api jobs then is it required gateway for snowfalke cause data is not refreshing but file is publishing through API (JENKINS JOBS)

Hi Adam, great video as usual. I'm struggling with connecting to a firewall protected ADLS, getting a similar error as the one you're getting in the second case (the Allow Azure services on the trusted services list to access this storage account is enabled). The difference is we're getting this error as we try to connect from power bi desktop in a local machine using the AAD credentials (If we use the storage account key it works fine). OK, totally get the Power BI positioning, but what about online pivot tables consumed within Power BI ? Can connect to PPU models beautifully with full interactivity, but cannot connect to Azure or AS services even with a properly configured gateway. Is this supported and I'm doing / not doing something dumb ? If not supported, is it coming ? Power BI is not the full deliverable answer. Power BI with online Pivot Tables to the SAME datasources is !

I'd love to see a postgresql on azure set up.. Its one of those things that happily runs on a VM with PBi desktop, but once you try to get the service to manage the refresh the credentials just fail. I would also like to see how to get a local machine to connect using the postgresql connector in power bi desktop. I have installed the latest PBi desktop, stripped out every bit of superfluous dot net stuff on the machine but it just wont work. the VM works fine and I assume it's due to it being in the environment where the data source is, but I connect via VPN so it should work right? I can connect to the very same data using ODBC so why not posgtreSQL native connector? I can also connect using PGAdmin using odbc but cannot add the servers using postgreSQL method. Is there something missing from my local machine do you think? It's driving me nuts I must say.
