Why can’t a robot just click “I’m not a robot”? Turns out the answer is part of a bigger story about being human.
The box test isn’t really about the box! It’s actually tracking other things about your behavior, like how you move your mouse as you go to check the box.
The tech is called reCAPTCHA - “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart”. And these days, these tests are not about figuring out what makes humans BETTER than robots. They’re about what makes humans human. It’s the same question we’ve been thinking about for centuries.

It not only measure lines but also speed. Once I got a virus/bot in my computer and that tried to click the captcha, but before that could happen, I failed the captcha multiple times in less than a second before I tried to do anything.

When you're on mobile, it analyzes the capacitance of the touch screen when you tap on it. A bot wouldn't be using the screen. It would just click the box.

People really believe anything on the internet do they. Recaptcha is owned by google. When you visit any site that has google services like google ads, login, analytics, recaptcha, Chrome, search.... Your browser is given A unique ID which is saved in the browser cookie. Whenever your browser requests ads or any google services it sends that ID to google too. That way google can track your activities like what site you are visiting, what article you're reading. If your browser makes a lot of requests in a short period of time google knows that too, and of course if you make a lot of requests to the site that uses recaptcha they log that too. If your activities are higher than normal, instead of a simple check box they will give you more and more difficult questions. If your browser has cookies or JavaScript disabled they would just block you instantly.

The only way to fake that signal is to not fake it. Use an actual physical robot to physically touch the screen with a stylus. That's a lot of effort for so little pay off. No fraudster is going to bother with that.

This video is only partly correct. It's only talking about one of the most basic things this test is checking. When you click the box you are accepting their "privacy terms" it's right there under the reCAPTCHA icon in the video. Sure, they might have a sanity check to make sure you're not doing really obvious bot behavior. But even the most basic mouse simulation program can move the mouse "like a human". What this is really doing under the hood is checking your cookies, web history, and metadata. All things you're agreeing to share with them when you click the box. It's a way to collect "clean" data that is agreed to be shared. That's the primary use for this. The secondary use is that they analyze your metadata to to see if it meets the threshold of an existing user they have tracked. Companies have a unique online profile for you. Their using this to confirm you're likely not a bot. They're not trying to stop all bots. That's impossible. They're trying to collect metadata from users with a nice "legal" reason for tracking literally everything you do. And also make it a little more difficult for the average Joe with some code knowledge to spam their site.

It looks at more than just your cursor. It looks at browsing history, cursor behavior, frequently visited sites, device usage etc. Even on phone. If u find yourself clicking images on phone it's not your cursor. They might just be using an old version of reCaptcha or your other data is not sufficient.

that's like literally the point of turing test you know :) It's not to tell human and machine apart. Turing was mathematician, did great deal with constructing machines. Turing test is a proof, that if you can construct a machine that a human can't tell apart from human, a human is just a machine. (And he was talking about a "reading/writing" machine capable you would be able to "talk with", which we pretty much have with GPT now. So if a human can't recognise twitter posts done by bots apart from those done by humans, you know what that means.)

The robot would also need to emulate a typical end-user and their device consistently (varying render and JS engine speeds etc as is usual in a time-shared process). Gathering browser cookies or other tracking tokens from cross-origin domains (sites that support sign-in with Google for example, Google analytics and recaptcha IP tracking with successful logins). Durations of visits across sites and actions taken must be realistic. If there's a hint of suspicion a OCR or similar challenge will be prompted. Web developer here. Depending upon the type of bot it might not even have to move a pointer in a straight line; a bot that is integrated with a browser does not have to move a pointer at all. It can just click specific things directly-a bit like with a touchscreen but without so much as touch coordinates. Purely programmatic interaction is commonly used for testing and automation. You’re right about forms that try to detect automation, but developers know that too, so we can try to automate randomized human-like movements if we are so inclined.

the purpose of recaptchas is to avoid spam bots entering websites in a large scale causing websites to crash. why websites crash? because websites needs to send and process tons of information to alot of users at a time. crashing a website takes about million of bots, and crashing google takes almost a "gogol" more. the idea you suggested is a good one, but it takes too much computational power to send hundreds of the bots to a website because it uses more operations to do so. its not impossible, but extremely expensive. maybe a hundred bots? that's not enough to crash a website. most of spam bots used today are extremely optimised for this exact reason, they dont even have a cursor.

Like as an able bodied person I fail them about half of the time, I can’t imagine what it is like for people who are not. The picture ones are often super bad, and I have a hard time telling what I’m supposed to click on, I imagine it would be harder for someone who has a visual impairment or a different disability. And sometimes the word ones are really confusing. Also if you use something other than a mouse, it would be hard. And I assume that captchas would often not be compatible (if ever) with screen readers.
