Canada Goose parkas have become synonymous with wealth, celebrity, and Hollywood, but the brand wasn’t always the luxury label it is today. What started out as a little-known manufacturer of utilitarian outerwear went through decades of transformation and three generations of leadership before becoming a status symbol. Since taking over as CEO in 2001, Dani Reiss has leveraged the brand’s reputation for quality to foster a cult following of folks who covet these coats. Here’s how Canada Goose went from making jackets for its competitors to selling parkas that cost more than some used cars.
Editor's Note: At 1:17, we incorrectly show a picture of David Reiss when referring to Sam Tick. At 17:32, we say "this year" when the data comes from fiscal year 2024.

My partner bought me one before he passed away and i remember how happy he was giving me this gift of love. He told me that I will be nice and warm waiting for the bus and that was his main goal of gifting me this Christmas gift. I sometimes wonder whenever I put it on that maybe he knew he would not be around to pick me up from work or from college. He was on a machine cleaning his blood as he had lost both of his kidneys so he wanted to make sure I was not cold. Whenever I now put it on, it brings tears to my eyes for I can still feel his love for me. Putting on my Canada Goose coat brings back a flood of my memories of him and my loss even after year since his passing in 2012. Thank you my love for your heart felt love in gifting me one of these coats. Your love and kindness for me lives on….. I will always cherish this coat….

In 2009 I was working for Paragon sports in NYC and for my birthday I wanted a coat. My employee discount was 30% and I chose a Marmot. I remember my Mom looking at the coat and saying, “hell no!” Lol She instead looked at the rack and said “I like this coat with the Canada patch”. I think the retail back then for a Langford parka was $900 and with my discount it was around $650. By far the best investment. Then in 2014, I purchased an olive green Langford parka which I still currently wear. Canada Goose coats are excellent quality, but they’re too expensive now. I’m glad they have a lifetime warranty.

They were never that cheap. Back then they were in the same price range as North Face or Patagonia & the older premium brands like Pendleton. It is ludicrous how expensive they’ve become. @@encabsss they have to weigh the cost of doing that to the brand, but they may decide not to purely because of tariffs on their imports even if they move to the US. for example, they will still need to buy down from canada/europe and components/materials from china. even if you buy a component from an american supplier already, chances are that they are importing dye or chemicals etc to make it and they often come from china. that increased cost will not be faced in canada even though US sales would drop. the smartest move would be to open a plant just to serve the US market, and have the best of both worlds with brand image there are many businesses that manufacture across both countries that are going to find some loopholes in this situation to increase manufacturing in canada(like an electronics manufacturer who is buying foreign components and selling goods to non-US customers from Canada, while running business as usual from their US plants to Us customers. ofc, overall it will be devastating for both economies regardless.

It’s the “Famous Amos Effect”. Famous Amos, as he was known by, made chocolate chip cookies and they weren’t selling that well, he was advised to TRIPLE the price (or something like that) in order to give the illusion that they were a highly crafted culinary item thereby giving them a much higher perceived appeal…it worked and now those little overpriced to chocolate chip cookies are on every grocery store cookie/junk food aisle in the country. Canada Goose uses the same emotional joke on society to create the appeal to their product - the jacked up price gives the illusion that their product is far superior to other brands…and it’s working.

I bought my daughter a CG Montebello jacket for $400 about 12 years ago and that same jacket now sells for over $1300. The crazy price rise is partly due to popular demand and partly due to a change in ownership, with US-based Bain Capital owning 70% of the shares. Outdoor Survival Canada is a good alternative, prices are about 25% lower and the quality is just as good as CG.

I can say as somebody who lived and worked in the James Bay of northern Canada that the resolute parka is the coat of the north. Go to the airport in Montreal in February, every resolute coat you see is somebody headed north, everybody who is not is headed south. Unfortunately, all their other coats are crap, cheaply made fashion coats. My resolute is 15 yrs old and has been worn for hundreds if not thousands of hours, covered in pike slime, Caribou blood and spruce sap and just keeps on being awesome. I've been through three other of their urban models which fell apart within a few years but the resolute is a tank.

Getting a strange feeling that lot of these comments in the comment section are bots or shills repeating the same talking points. No way I am paying 1,800 CAD for a parka. I feel most Canadians are priced out of these since they turned into a 'luxury' brand. The only people in Canada that I see wearing these are Rich Chinese students coming here to study.

The price point is just insanely high. I can literally buy 4x really high quality winter jackets for extreme weathers. I rather have one long and short coat + one that is much more breathable for long winter walking/hiking sessions. All my current winter wear are high quality and never any issues even -25C weather. Canada Goose is this modern fake luxury that makes people to spend their money on things they want, but don't actually need.

Some people in very cold climates will not be able to stand extreme cold with synthetic fibers. They need fur. I thought they were still using geese down instead of "feather" like many other brands are using. The original down coats were the best. Now, I still freeze in a down coat. Thank goodness for my shearling and cashmere.

The fabric is not strong enough. The inner arm seams that naturally rub against the side of the jacket when you walk quickly wears and rips. I had mine replaced on the warranty after just two years and with the new coat it happens too. I’m just gonna keep wearing now until a massive hole appeals now. Not worth it unfortunately.

I have a Northface and a Canada Goose and they are both excellent in NYC or Northeastern US winters BUT the Canada Goose is more insulated and keeps you a bit warmer. I would absolutely suggest the investment if you commute to work on public transportation or if you spend time outdoors during the winter. But if you're a car person and wear your coat in between your car and your destination, save the money, it won't justify the cost. We all do not need a coat that withstands -30 degrees. Be realistic and buy for quality and need***.
