So I recently just became an MCU fan. I was a casual, less than a casual actually. Before infinity war I’ve only seen Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther, Spider Man Homecoming, & Guardians of the Galaxy. The only reason I saw most of those movies was because of my cousin who was a big fan. At that moment Thor was my favorite because of his bold personality & strength. After watching infinity war I became intrigued. Months later I watched every single marvel movie in the MCU from scratch. 2 weeks later I was so impressed with this one character. A character who seemed to be overlooked by many fans and casuals, his movies, to me at least, were not only good but they were even better than the last. Captain America, hands down became my favorite avenger. This was solidified after Civil War. Just a simple kid who wanted to fight for himself and for the weak, someone who’s morality never changed, only improved. Someone who stood up for his country and the organization he served until he realized how rotten to the core it was & realized he was surrounded by snakes. Someone who stood by his childhood best friend, who he knew there was still hope inside of him. I’ve seen people claim Steve was being selfish for not giving into the Sokovia Accords & having them be regulated and kept in check just like Stark said. But they fail to realize why he’s skeptical about it. The man took down a secret organization and was about to sacrifice himself just so his best friend comes back to his senses. He’s the embodiment of progressive change, standing up for himself and the little guy. I cannot wait to see what happens in End Game. I kind of expect this movie to be his last farewell, and honestly I wouldn’t mind because this character really grew on me. The moment he became my favorite character was in civil war. Where Tony strikes him to push him back, aims at him and says “Stand down, Final warning” This man gets up, squares his hands up, and just like before he became captain America, says “I can do this all day” He’s the same kid, same heart, same courage only thing that’s changed? Is his physical strength and all the other characteristics are only more amplified. What a legend

The First Avenger was the first MCU movie I ever watched, I immediately needed to watch all the other Phase 1 movies. None of the other Phase 1 movies really connected with me. I really like Iron Man 1, but just didn’t connect with me. Thor I find rather middle of the road, and Incredible Hulk is fine. Iron Man 2 is fun too watch, but ultimately lacking the quality of the first. Avengers is also fun, but as blasphemous it is to say I’m just not to big a fan of it. It may not even be in my top 10 MCU films. Great video Chris, I really love this Film Negative series. Favorite MCU character is Captain America and my favorite MCU movie is Captain America The Winter Soldier. Civil War and a Infinity War are close 2nd and 3rd. Would love to see Kingdom of Heaven Director’s Cut as the next film negative. Is one of my favorite films, it bombed. It had massive studio edits, but it is easily too 5 Ridley Scott movies for me.

I think all the Avengers movies are lackluster. It's all about spectacle over story. Which... fine, I get it. But pretty much every solo movie has a better story with more character development than any of the Avengers. Which, again... fine. Movies are a visual medium, if the Avengers movies are just supposed to be a visual treat that's fun because they're bringing together all these heroes, that could work. But make them different: no more army of sameness fighting the Avengers with a blue beam in the sky threatening the end of the world.
@tommythedog30095 жыл бұрын
@@SchulzEricT No they are not. Avengers 1 had way more character building than iron man 2. Ok. Character dynamics , interrelationships between heroes are very well established in team up movies. If you increase the no. of characters, you should have less expectations for character building. Avengers infinity war did 100% character development for Thanos. Avengers movies are not the same at any level.

The Captain America Trilogy is my favorite in the MCU without a doubt, and I love The First Avenger for so many of the reasons that you pointed out. Thank you for the great breakdown of the different aspects of the film making that a really allows the audience - if they let it- to connect with Steve. I love that the look and feel of the film is so different from the modern day films because it shows an even more visceral disconnect from Steve's time - where the audience spent the majority of the movie with different color palate and saturation. Also, I just appreciate Chris Evans's acting and the sincerity he brought/brings to Steve, who , as you mentioned, could have easily gone a different direction.

One thing I love about the movie is how well they give Steve character agency. It would've been so easy to just throw him into the war after his super soldier upgrade and make him into a United States yes man. This is great for character agency as well as establishing his character and his future actions in the MCU.

Rewatching this movie made me agree with all of this. The movie has its flaws, but it does a lot right. It really establishes who Captain America is and takes time to build him up. I'm glad 99% of the movie is during that WW2 period. And I agree that unlike a lot of heroes in their origin movies, he does make a real sacrifice. He doesn't get the win/win scenario. He loses many of the people he knew, his place in time, and a life that were there for him. I think Iron Man had the best origin story and Phase 1 movie. But Captain America ended up one of if not my favorite Avenger because of his overall arc. And the while his first movie isn't his best movie, it is a good movie and sets him on that path. And while he is called Captain America, you can love this character no matter what country you are from. He stands for the kind of things that many people all over the world can appreciate and respect. No matter what happens in Endgame he'll remain one of my favorites.

Captain America is my favorite Avenger, too! It's for some of the same reasons as Spider-Man: he shows us an ordinary person with very human problems, has him answer a moral question, and become the type of person so many of us with we could be. Now, you make some good points about him missing the dance. That definitely illustrates a flaw and a mistake. But even those of us who succeed at something also struggle with regrets for what we had to leave behind, so it's easy to relate to that, too, despite his fantastical circumstances at the end of the film.

I really enjoyed this video essay. Captain America is my personal favorite Avenger as well. I think an interesting film for a future episode would be Kingsman: The Golden Circle or more recently Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for this excellent video, so accurately highlighting the CAtFA strengths...and some weaknesses 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 The whole Cap trilogy is the MCU's crown jewel which got me emotionally invested in all the other movies with Steve (and his pal Bucky).

Great video. I love this movie and it's gotten better and better for me with age. Iconic.

Such a great movie, and such a great video on your part. You had me choking up at some points, especially at the “I don’t want to kill anyone, I just don’t like bullies” the scene is great but your commentary through the video really made me think.

10:20 That's actually a really brilliant observation. Brings his character into focus.

One of the most underrated movies out there. It is my second favorite MCU movie after Infinity War and even there it is by a close margin. I think they get Steve Rogers perfect as the good man he is in the movie.

Seeing as this video alone made me cry, it's become pretty obvious which Avenger is my favourite. Gotta love the little guys. Cap is such a genuine and good character, yet he isn't perfect. Genuinely the most relatable Avenger. As relatable as any superhero can be anyways. Love him so much.

Cap is the only character in the MCU to get a perfect trilogy (so far).

Thank you so much for this video! Cap is my absolute favorite, but I too have fallen into the "Cap 1 was passable, his movies didn't get great until Winter Soldier" trap. This video actually helped me realize a completely new angle of this movie.

It's my 6th favorite mcu movie (under Guardians, Infinity War, Civil War, Winter Soldier and Iron Man). It's so underrated.

I love the first Captain America and am glad that it is getting some well-deserved praise. I think I was in fourth or fifth grade when it came out, and I was ready to be amazed by superheroes. I have always admired Steve's compassion and humility, and those traits were impressed upon me at an early age in part because of this movie.
