How Carvajal went from 'Finished' to 'Ballon Dor Contender'

It’s crazy how us as fans the way we perceive a player can change so quickly. For example, Dani Carvajal last year went from someone who washed and past his prime to now a genuine Ballon Dor contender and the “greatest right back of all time” ahead of Dani Alves and Philipp Lahm.

Ballon Dor rankings based off of club and international football in the 2023-24 season 1. Vinicius Junior 2. Rodri 3. Jude Bellingham 4. Dani Carvajal 5. Lautaro Martinez This has to be one of the closest Ballon Dor races ever. The reason for that is because there were many players who had good seasons won trophies for club and country and every single month, there was a different frontrunner for the Ballon Dor even though people needed to wait until the champions league and international competitions have been played. I would say that right now all the players are on the same level. At the start of the season, we all said that Bellingham was going to win the Ballon Dor and then after the champions league Vini and since it’s an international year and Spain won the EUROs, Rodri is the frontrunner and Carvajal is now in the conversation, there are people saying that Lautaro Martinez needs to be taken seriously as a Ballon Dor contender because Inter Milan won Serie A, Argentina won the Copa America and he was the top scorer in both competitions. International football just changes everything because in a span of a month you can go from being the best player in the world to out of the race for the Ballon Dor. It’s crazy that Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane despite scoring 40+ goals in all competitions and had more goals than any other player in the top 5 leagues in Europe and were both the top scorers in the champions league aren’t being considered as Ballon Dor contenders because neither of them won the UCL or the EUROs with their respective clubs or national teams. Mbappe and Kane really struggled at the EUROs which obviously doesn’t help them at all. I know football isn’t just about stats and a player wins the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals in a season as this is an award that’s won by the best player in the world not best scorer, at the same time, that’s not the right way people should be looking at an award that’s all about individual brilliance. Part of the Ballon Dor should be about the trophies you’ve won for club and country after you’ve looked an individual player and determine whether or not they’re the best player on their team and whoever wins the Ballon Dor this year, the opinions are going to be split. If Vini or Bellingham wins people will say “it’s Madrid PR, football fell off, this award has no credibility”, if Rodri or Carvajal wins “it’s an insult to football that a CDM and a RB is winning a Ballon Dor”, and you know what that’s part of why I’m happy that Kylian Mbappe has made that move to Real Madrid because when it comes to the Ballon Dor, football is over in that regard because if he performs and plays well, I don’t see any player other than him touching this award at least once in the next 5-6 years because the fact that Rodri Vini Carvajal or Bellingham could win this award before him is that a sign that 1. Football has fell off 2. The Ballon Dor has become too trophy centric in recent years 3. Are they truly the best players in the world or their ability is being judged by how many team trophies they win. For those who think that the Ballon Dor isn’t a serious award anymore and they should just cancel it, don’t worry because all of that will change next season and in the coming years depending on how Mbappe performs at Madrid as bro gotta save football.

Im ngl, I'm not impressed with this Ballon d'or shortlist. We went from Ronaldo vs Messi to Rodri vs. Martinez. So when people say football fell off I would actually agree with them. The only player that can rebuild the prestige of the Ballon Dor is Vini. Vini was the literal best player in the world for 2024. I hate how these international trophies can make mid players seem Ballon Dor quality.

Back in the day whether it was during the Messi and Ronaldo era in the 2010s or even the early 2000s and 1990s with guys like R9 Ronaldinho Zidane etc, the Ballon Dor used to be an award that was won based off of who the best individual player in the world was in a given year and then we were able to then differentiate their performances from their collective accolades and that was a fair way to determine who the best player in the world was. Overall in recent years especially with how open football is, a lot of people are pushing an agenda for certain players to be in the race for the Ballon Dor simply because they played on teams that won a lot of trophies. This isn’t just a noticeable trend this year with the emphasis we put solely on team achievements in the race for the Ballon Dor, it’s been a common theme of late. I lost respect for this award after Jorginho finished 3rd in the Ballon Dor in 2021 because he was part of a team that won the champions league and the EUROs and while he was good, you can’t tell me that he was the best player on either Chelsea or Italy. Even to this day, there are still people who believed that Wesley Sneijder was robbed of the Ballon Dor in 2010 because yes he won the treble with Inter Milan and had a good World Cup for the Netherlands where he helped them reach the final, but was he even the best player on his team or at the level required for a Ballon Dor. Many Real Madrid fans will disagree with me on this, Dani Carvajal getting Ballon Dor shouts is basically Jorginho in 2021 all over again. On current form he’s the best right back in the world and at the age of 32, he had a stellar season for club and country. He was excellent for Real Madrid where he was once again critical in helping them win the Champions League scoring the game winning goal in the final against Borussia Dortmund getting MOTM combined with him, he scored a lot of important goals while being a fullback who was solid in defense and he was also key to helping Spain win the EUROs as he was an 8/10 and I couldn’t remember him putting a foot wrong and I don’t know how Kyle Walker is in the team of the tournament over him, and yes he had a great individual season and he won a lot of trophies, but again, as I’ve said before, he isn’t even the best player for either his club or national team. It’s misleading to compare him to other attacking players since he’s a defender and they never get enough love for these individual awards, the thing is that as good of a season he had, he’s another player who has a great case to be the Ballon Dor, but you have to at least be the best player on your team. With Carvajal, similar to Sneijder in 2010 and other players, he was just a good player on a team that won multiple trophies because it’s debatable on whether or not Real Madrid would’ve won the champions league and Spain would’ve won the EUROs without him.

You forgot to mention that it would be similar to Modric winning the 2018 Ballon Dor. Even though I love Modric, him winning the Ballon Dor over Ronaldo was criminal, maybe if Modric won the world cup then I would understand but no he was a runner up. Ballon dor is very confusing and they really inconsistent when picking Ballon Dor winners. The last non controversial Ballon Dor win was Benzema in 2022.

@@keazenlanders since Croatia got to the World Cup final (lost to France) and he was already part of a team that won the champions league, that’s why Modric won the Ballon Dor and this is the same agenda people are trying to push for Carvajal. I agree the award is confusing and yes Carvajal had a good season where he was part of 2 very successful teams, but my issue is when people push an agenda for certain players to be in the conversation for the Ballon Dor based off of the amount of team trophies they’ve won when this is mostly an individual award.
