To be honest my opinion is why central Cee gets so much hate is because the catalog of UK drill rappers before him that never got this type of fame & to be fair some of them are arguably more talented . Imagine listening to prime uk drill with the 67s ,the Harlem Spartans , the zone 2s , the OFBs , the unknown T digga D , PS , suspect , and many more , all these talented artist that had the potential to blow & be something great & the one guy that gets the global recognition is central Cee 😂 like this light skin school kid is what the world accepted ? That’s why everyone seems to not like it in my opinion

It's also because he marketed himself as someone that is part black which he isn't, lots of black people in the US thought he was mixed with black but nope, he's white and chinese Guyanese. He even wouldn't answer interviewers about it until he cleared globally which is very deceptive
@hearditb4

He didn’t market himself as black lol. He obviously has black influence but so does a lot of people in London. To the shoes and clothes they wear to the environments they grew up in. He also is a rapper which used to be marketed around black people. If people thought he was mixed and chose to run with it, not really his problem
@shebonyshand
@shebonyshand 15 күн бұрын
@hearditb4 hello, I re read what I typed, and I don't rescind anything except him marketing himself as mixed, which he is just not with black. What I will say is that he knows that people thought he was part black but he didn't say anything about it as it was benefiting him in the black community, avoiding revealing his race/ethnicity in interviews but as he's got a global wave , he's happily released what he is, even helped out at a Chinese Guyanese restaurant. I don't want back and forth with this tbf, no need, not a hater at all but I definitely not the only one nor thousand that has said this, have a lovely week
@hearditb4
@hearditb4 15 күн бұрын
@@shebonyshand tbf I agree with you, he could’ve stated what he was a lot sooner. However all it could’ve took for people was a quick google search and they would’ve found out. At the end of the day, who cares what his ethnicity is. I’ve certainly known white guys that have grown up in black environments, therefore know what it’s like to be black. I also know black people that their parents moved to white neighbourhoods therefore don’t really understand what it’s like to grow up in black environments. So if someone has a black or white background, it will be shown through the way they move and how they conduct themselves. Growing up in Shepherds Bush, it’s kinda hard not to have a certain influence in the way you dress and market yourself. I do still agree with you tho. Have a nice week, god bless

Tbh the CC hate isn’t invalid but it’s also not his fault. But there are loads of rappers who are arguably better than him who never blew. He has blown this much not be cause he is the best but because he is good and has an ‘aesthetic’ which sadly just means he’s not black. Same with Drake. @@dffrnttd9474 yes he would. 🤣💯 in America we loyal to good music when you got it you got it. I do believe his complexion open up more doors for him but it’s not what got him to where he at solely. Nooo Drizzy talented and his songs was undeniable it’s just a fact. I say the same argument towards Eminem his complexion helped him alot but it didn’t make him Eminem or as talented as he became. Same goes for CC I personally don’t think he’s great but his songs are catchy for the times we’re in and the young listeners currently. His complexion helps him in UK and other countries but his cosplaying as a black man helps him in America.

I think reductive way to look at central cee's marketing is if a fan cant come as 'you' to a halloween party and everyone knows who they are, you haven't got a recognisable brand. When you think about it alot of artists that are established in america now that came up in the ' eveyone is lil something era' everyone had a gimmick to get on. Lil yachty braids,69 hair, lil pump, travis braids inspired by rocky braids, xxxtentacion hair, kodak black china bumps, etc i think people forget that happened. It can be more subtle but it still makes a difference I think his management has been prett intentional with his look. Even that cap he always wears, and he has nice hair aswell maybe the styles dont last long but from he always wear it it became something he's known for and now hes sells them This is all aside from the controversial lyrics etc
@chrislawuk
@chrislawuk 14 күн бұрын
Do you mean reductive? Cos I think that’s a really useful observation marketing wise - never heard it before. Whether we like it or not, in the social media era marketing is even more important than ever, maybe more important than the music itself (as a few people have pointed out with Cench, but I think his music does the job it’s intended to do. But is he all about music in his soul? If musically he wanted to do something that he knew wouldn’t sell, would he do it? Probably not) If you don’t make an impact the first time, you’re probably not gonna get a second chance to make one.
@dseph7852
@dseph7852 11 күн бұрын
@@chrislawuk Reductive in the sense that it is the simplest way to explain the marketing strategy and probably leaves out alot of the nuance which contributed to his managers plan. I don't think he is an 'artist' in the true essence sense who uses the medium of music to express himself authentically from a deep place even it didn't reach a mass audience. I'd call him a commercial musician primarily, he does what it says on the tin to the required standard, it sells and it appealing to a wide audience.

I should also add, this is something i learned later but Dababy used to go around dressed in a big diaper like a literal baby to stand out. After doja blows up he goes global, suddenly all the glazers in the comment section saying all this like " cench is the goat, he dont have time for this" or whatnot. I ent watched the video yet knows iss gunna be a banger but i lowkey side w cench haters on this one n naturally grew up listening to digga anyways. It's the same with Central Cee- Dave is superior, but record execs feel that his 'look' is not as palatable to a commercial audience- therefore they invest in Central Cee instead. Him being at the top is only proof of who labels are willing to invest in based on who they think will do well, lighter skinned people. Hello? damn as a born and raised NYer, Central Cee music is clean af. i see a lot of UK dudes saying he's a capper and a roadman and doesn't do any of the stuff he says in his songs but who tf cares. i think UK dudes just using that as an excuse to hate on him because they're jealous he's successful and actually makes good music and maybe the fact that he's lightskin and better looking than them (pause). yall UK dudes just haters and copers lmfao who tf cares if he's lying. just judging the music as is, it's fire. jelousy is crazy...and in no universe is Digga or Kairo even better than Central Cee, their music is just boring, basic, bland, cookie cutter slop. Dave is clean af too tho, Dave and Cench definitely top 2 in UK and everyone else is just multiple levels below them.

in Canada uk rap is huge and the fashion is too, but most of the culture we have was being put behind to try and appeal to a us audience musically. Then after they saw the UK used their slang and accent, Canada started doin it too. Toronto sadly has the same outlook many people in the UK have about canadian rappers, the only rapper that barely gets hate out here (out of being overplayed on radio) is Drake and Northsidebenji. People hate on Duvy, Pressa, and even guys like Agent 00 are getting hate for what he "does for the city" by sadboi (another toronto rapper who was sayin all this on Tylil's stream). It's actually holding Toronto back while my city Ottawa is standing behind Twotiime so much that even his opps are showing love.

Whether you like it or not, Central Cee is every label's desired artist😂. Who will actually invest into any of the "real" UK drill artists? Y'all hate him because he doesn't promote or live the life many of your faves are currently living. In jail and committing crimes. He stayed away from the streets after becoming big, and he focused on his craft. Also, he should really inform award shows and other media people that he's a hip hop artist and not a drill rapper. That's why people hate him.

@COACollection labels didn't do anything for x. He wasn’t signed until 2018, a few weeks before his passing to be exact (Billboard, 2018). Part of the reason he was gaining a massive fan base was that he began on a small music platform like sound cloud. Which was basically the 'My Space' of the 2010s. He did a lot of club events as well with Ski Mask and other 'Members Only' rappers. Rolling Loud also helped him connect with fans. He had features from stars like Trippie Red. J.cole and Kendrick shouted him out. And quite obviously, his beefs with Drake and the Migos gave him a *HUGE* push. It also wasn't until after his death that he became a global sensation. He still received major hate for his criminal record. Don't forget, x never performed outside of the US because of that record and the house arrest ankle device. So that stagnated him by a lot.

Only comparison would be Skepta, Dave and to some extent Giggs but neither are a household name internationally (at least to young people) No other UK rapper has been this big on their actual come up not like resurgence. This is his first foray into being a professional recording artist and he's already massive. Him and his management played the game well and his delivery and voice is easily digestible aswell.

Honestly the hate for Central Cee is as diverse as liberty and democracy! Some hate because he's now more famous, some hate because now Central Cee is the front runner and leading example of UK Grime and Drill for Americans until they dig further, some hate because of him apparently capping, some hate because he's an actual outsider of the UK, a few hate because some actions he did made him look like a rat. Even though I do like some of his music I don't like him, sometimes despise him and why? He's just more handsome than me, and anything that's more handsome than this friendly psychopath just rattles my jimmies😂! This hate for him is as diverse as a KFC variety bucket!🤣🤣

Tankz explained it pretty well like the reason the scene is where it is at is because there is no competition so artists at the top are willing and comfortable where they are cause back in the day like during prime drill prime afroswing prime grime etc there was so much artists out so much competition that if you slipped up or stopped releasing somebody is there to take your spot but nowadays the uk don’t really have that no more so artists are willing to stick to what works for them and stay in there lane instead of trying to elevate their sounds

That’s why someone like central cee is able to be the forefront of the scene even though he’s no where near the best rapper due to his marketing and willingness to expand and elevate his brand maybe not so much the music but him branching out overseas and making a name for himself in Europe and America has massively helped his career to the point where the uk doesn’t even make up 20% of his audience

“Don’t see Dave having the discipline to stay out of jail” who the fuck told you Dave is in jail? I sense a micro aggression in there. Cench blowing up isn’t to do with his race, more time it holds him back, not in business meetings or labels wanting him though, that makes it easier unless he wanna do a Diddy and jay z 😭 but in terms of people taking in their music etc etc, him being lighter makes that harder and is probs one of the reasons he got so much hate in the UK.

I've been listening to him since Day in the Life, and as much as I can honestly say he's nowhere near the best rapper the UK has ability wise, success in rap nowadays is more about marketing than anything and that's where a lot of UK rappers are failing unfortunately no matter how good they are
