Charles Leclerc has a deserved reputation for being one of F1's fastest drivers, but recently has found himself struggling to maximise the 2024 Ferrari compared to team-mate Carlos Sainz.
Ferrari made a deliberate effort to engineer its 2024 F1 car to make it much easier to drive than the 2023 version - so why is Leclerc now failing to get the most from it?
Edd Straw and Scott Mitchell-Malm join Ben Anderson to dissect Leclerc's underwhelming start to F1 2024.

It's not really a concern. Leclerc admitted he was struggling with tyre prep and he spent 3 days in the sim working on it. He's always been the fastest over one lap and to people saying Sainz is leagues ahead of Leclerc are clearing not paying close enough attention to what happening. Sainz is a great driver but the media hyping him up by bringing Leclerc down is highly unprofessional and sometimes downright insulting, especially when you consider the fact that we're only 4 races into the season.

The Ferrari is still insanely fast over 1 lap. They had the best quali car in Bahrain and Australia yet both Sainz and Leclerc bottled pole in both quali sessions. In the other 2 race weekends it was the 2nd fastest quali car. If Leclerc can‘t beat Sainz in quali then it‘s clearly not about any characteristics of the car but rather Leclerc underperforming/ Sainz overperforming. Leclerc will turn 27 this year and is still nowhere near consistent/complete enough to ever challenge for a championship against someone like Max in comparable machinery.

Well tbf at the start of 2022 he did show some glimpse of being able to outdrive Max, then Ferrari started to Ferrari and the RB18 started to skyrocket that's when Leclerc started to crash and lose control. We are actually lucky that we will see him along Lewis in 2025, then we will be able to really know if he is at a elite driver level. Carlos is able to optimize and take the best out of a chaotic race, but Charles will outperform not just Carlos, most drivers on the Grid if all performance (speed, pace, etc...) things align. In other words, Carlos is a better Mario Kart player, while Leclerc is a better Gran Turismo player.

He had 7 or 8 front row starts in a row until australia. The only thing stopping him finishing on the podium in all those races was reliability. Hes had the best race pace and tyre management so far this year. Hes just had two subpar quali sessions and your writing him off. If he can get the quali prep right (which he already had in the first two races) and Ferrari can find the 2-3 tenths they need with the upgrade, it will be like the start of 2022 where he will be as good as max, just not in a car that blows up every 3 seconds and is much slower on the straights.
@fritsieboiker8449
@fritsieboiker8449 Ай бұрын
@@dylanburston7453 Leclerc was able to go toe to toe with Verstappen when the Ferrari was the faster car, and even then he bottled it multiple times. Adding to that his sub-par driving in changeable conditions and his okay wet weather-driving, it will be difficult for him to beat Verstappen over a season, especially in high pressure race after high pressure race. That's where Hamilton/Verstappen/Alonso thrive.
@dylanburston7453
@dylanburston7453 Ай бұрын
@@fritsieboiker8449 He bottled it once, and the cars were strong in differnt areas. The Ferrari was better in the corners, and the RB had better top speed and tyre wear, which meant it was a better race car when it was close, which more often than not it was. Leclerc cracking under pressure is a huge myth perpetuated by once incedent he had 2 years ago. His best performances come under pressure. Monza 2019 Most of the races in that shitbox in 2020 Brazil 2022. Took the car out of the wall lap one, back of the feild, and overtook everyone up to his teammate. AD 22/23 when 2nd the the WDC/WCC was on the line In fact, most of the end of 2023. He was the best driver on the grid from Suzuka on. Charles makes less mistakes than Lewis, and a similar amount to Fernanado, but had more pace than both of them. Max isnt a fair comparison (for 2023) as they were practically in differnt sports, but in 2022 Charles made one less mistake. And had it not been for his engine blowing in two of the races max made mistakes, max would have lost more points because of them His driving in a changable weekend needs some work, for example austria 2023, where sprint was wet and he was ok, and the race was dry and he was insane. That had alot to do with the car tho, as it had a stalling beam wing which made it super unpredictable and caught both drivers out even in perfect conditions. It hit leclerc more because hes more instinctive than carlos, who had lots of differnt cars in his career. But his wet weather driving itself is fine If you give Charles a car for a entire season, and a team that doenst fuck you over (which is now close to being the case) he would be a match for Verstappen.

He is excellent, but no driver has more crashes in quali than Leclerc. He and Sainz both have too many in-race crashes. As OP said, the ability to always consistently deliver their best is a differentiator. Hamilton has never been good at adapting to difficult cars, but he’s possibly the most consistent ever when his car is great.

When Charles gets the car dialed in to suit his driving style, he'll be formidable, and I expect some great racing between the two Ferrari drivers this year. Leclerc is very emotional, he`s easily affected by anything, he`s like dynamite and when sparks happen he goes boom. He`s very self critical, very very fast for 2 minutes but sadly a win requires cold blooded driving, strategy, consistency and the capacity to bounce back which he doesn`t possess too much. But this is just my opinion, maybe i`m wrong maybe not. Next year we will see for sure if he`s made from a champions cloth when Hamilton will be on the team hungry for the 8th title. Either this will make Leclerc strong mentally or it will sink him. I gravitate towards the latter.

I think the talking heads are really missing the point. Hamilton coming to Ferrari is a marketing ploy - He's certainly not the driver he was, but his name alone is going to raise Ferrari's stock significantly. At the end of the day, F1 is a business, and from a business standpoint, Hamilton coming in was a no-brainer. If Ferrari wanted to win, however, they shouldn't change their driver lineup. I'd argue the Sainz/Leclerc lineup is the strongest and most evenly matched on the grid, with Piastri/Norris in a close second. This is a championship-capable team without a doubt, however the Red Bulls and Verstappen are just too dominant right now.

This conversation is occurring because Leclerc has not put himself in a position to really capitalize when RB have an issue. Sainz has been the one taking advantage of RB off days and has found himself with 2 wins because of it. Also unfortunately for Leclerc, the last times he was truly fighting for a race win were marred by mistakes and crashes. He has produced some really good drives since then, but not standout moments that will be remembered at the end of the season. When you are an elite driver, you have to make standout drives to prove you are still elite. Suzuka was a great drive, but I don't think anyone will be talking about Leclerc in Suzuka come Abu Dhabi.

On one hand, people consider Sainz to be a great driver and claim he can pick up the fight against other teams should Leclerc have a few bad races. On the other hand, these same people would rate Leclerc absolutely washed whenever Sainz is beating Leclerc. Like the logic doesn't apply. You either agree Leclerc is washed, in that case Sainz is even more washed because he is only occasionally beating a washed Leclerc. Or you agree Sainz is a great solid driver, in that case it should be no surprise that he can beat Leclerc from time to time.

This is a non-issue. Leclerc slipped up from his usual quali position only in the last 2 races. Australia was a team issue with getting just one quali run in Q3. In Japan, Leclerc conceded that the tyre prep needs to be better from his end. Ferrari as a team are doing so much better than last couple of seasons, not making basic strategy mistakes. Sainz is really unlucky to lose his seat to one of the two, may be three possible contenders for a Ferrari seat (Ferrari would have jumped on a Alonso or Max option). But I agree with the comments that is Lewis still capable of winning a championship or is it just good for business? In their current form, RB does not seem to be going anywhere down the grid in 2025. It is going to take all might of Lewis, Charles and the best of Ferrari to take a shot at the championship.

Over the last 2 years, Red Bull have produced cars that look after their tyres in race, but the compromise was that they struggled to get them optimised for qualifying. Clearly Ferrari have gone in that direction and now Leclerc is struggling a little bit. I think he'd still rather have the current car, rather than one that goes backwards in the race.

I'm a huge fan of Carlos Sainz, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. It's only been 4 races into the season and people are already questioning whether replacing him with Hamilton was the wrong call by Ferrari? Lets see how he does for the rest of the season, because as good as Sainz is, he has had history of having a downturn in his performances over the course of the season. Lets see if he can keep his current form up in the coming races before we draw any conclusions.

Ferrari could’ve lead the title and would be closer to Verstappen if they forced Sainz to do the number 2 job he was hired to do and swapped with Leclerc. Car issues in Bahrain, messed up his qualifying in Australia by going out at that time that no one ever does well in, and then just should’ve done it in Japan because he has the points lead and the contract and is their number one. Jos Verstappen would be in jail if Max was treated how Leclerc is

Sad to say but Leclerc has missed the boat. A champion F1 trajectory is to drive for a back marker or midfield team to show potential, get hired by a winning team, dominate your teammate and make a championship bid either immediately or within three years. Without that regular step up and progress the driver will lose confidence and begin to wonder if they really are a champion. Charles has had 5 years with Ferrari now and hasn't got close. This has to have hurt his confidence. I wonder if when he does get the car he needs to win if he will be able to.
