Why China Has the Best Railways in the World

China has the largest network of high-speed trains in the world. It stretches a whopping 15,500 miles all over the country. But while that all sounds impressive, I can't help but wonder why they’d spend a fortune on building such a vast bullet train network when airplanes exist?
First, most central train stations are downtown, so you can easily reach them by subway. You don't need to go through extensive pre-boarding security. And even if there are some delays, they don't happen too often and are much shorter than those at airports. Also, with their wider seats, more legroom, and freedom to move around, modern bullet trains offer their passengers more comfort. That's only the beginning of the list of reasons why high-speed trains rock.

SUMMARY:
-First, you need to get to the Beijing airport. Then, you must find your way in this huge multi-terminal transportation hub. Chances are that your flight will be delayed. And then another problem is that airspace in China is incredibly congested.
-You can hand over as much as $500 for a Beijing-Hong Kong plane trip. But the same journey by train will cost you much less: around $150.
-Salaries in China are significantly lower than in the West, which means less money goes to construction workers. Also, high-speed railroads are built with the help of local materials, and that's great for both saving money and supporting the regional economy. But the most important thing is that all railroad parts, such as tracks and embankments, are all standardized.
-In the nearest future, they're going to build a 48-mile-long high-speed rail line between Zhoushan that will include a 10-mile-long tunnel running under the sea, making it the first underwater high-speed train tunnel in China.
-Shanghai Maglev reaches the top speed of a mind-blowing 268 miles per hour, so it takes just 8 minutes to travel 19 miles.

I am so absent-minded that I actually forgot my small luggage twice on China's bullet trains. On both times, I was able to retrieve them. My experiences inform me that they have an SOP for this sort of things. Since when I called their Lost and Found hotline, after I provided the date, train number, and general description of the lost item, they quickly located it and directed me to retrieve it. I must say I did not expect that.

Pizza Killer I know the challenges China faces in terms of air pollution and environmental damage. But with a population of 1.3 billion, China has an active and effective environmental protection strategy. We should look at it with the eyes of discovery, not just blame! At least, the environment is improving...

Pizza Killer You're right. I can't agree more. We all want a better environment. Chinese people have improved a lot in recent years with the popularization of higher education and the improvement of their quality. Many cities now implement very strict garbage classification. Many rural areas have recycling. It can't be done in a day... Thank you. I will start from myself to better protect the environment. Although I live in other countries most of the time, it is everyone's responsibility to take good care of the environment.

@Pizza Killer how to make a choice between a dirty bread and a LV skirt for a starving man? remember that china had more than one billion starving citizens a few decades ago while western had already been developed.... the development of a human society should be step by step...I believe China will be better and better in the future with our hard work . find out a social problem is very easy, but the problem would not be solved by just criticizing it... western countries are so good at finding and criticizing problems, how many of them get solved??? like the shooting incidents in USA

actually chinese labor cost isn't that lower than their counterparts of america, as people imagined. true reason is that those chinese construction projects use a lot of high tech machinery, instead use a lot of manual laborers as old time. the new rule of constructions in china is that, if you can use machinery, you should not use human labors. besides high level of standardization of viaduct design and building up, also girders and machinery, and laying tracks. those procedures are highly automated and mechanized. for a team of 22 members, each team can install 3 girders a day once viaducts are completed. also using viaducts also save operational cost since trains don't have to go up and down that much. safety is another reason. high speed trains running on viaducts are much more safer than running on the ground since there are significantly less possibilities that any animals and humans would get crossover the rails. not every viaduct has latter to climb up to the top.

First time I took the high speed train (not maglav) was 2012 or 2013 when I was there for a business trip. I remember it was still something fairly new and the cars were mostly empty. And then as I took them again throughout the years, it has definitely grown in popularity and become the preferred method of transportation. The Maglav is still not widely used, while it is faster, you have to carry your suitcase up a couple of levels to reach the Maglav, while the connecting #2 subway is right across the platform. Plus with the higher cost of taking the Maglav, I'd just call a taxi for the whole trip to the airport.

My favourite transportation type is railway system. Trains are safest way to travel somewhere. Accident rate is very low compared to other transportation systems. Moreover, it is cheap comfortable and fast. In an accident you will sink at sea with ships. Or you will crash down at 30,000 feet with airplanes. But trains do not have such a risk. There is only risk of derailment. But derailing has been overcome with very few losses. So I love trains. And no, I never traveled with bullet trains.

As a Chinese, I usually prefer plane by high speed train when travel. Here’s my reason. 1. If you book ticket more than a week earlier, take a plane will be cheaper. 2. There are also ID card check, security check and ticket check when take a train. The train station is also very huge. It doesn’t save much time and effort by taking a train. 3. The newly built high speed train stations are also far away from the downtown. But the airports offer lots of direct bus service, which make it even more convenient to go to the airport. 4. Planes offer luggage carrying service. If you have big luggage, the plane is the only choice. 5. If you fly in the morning in good weather, the planes seldom delay. When the traveling distance is over about 800km, the over all time spent by plane is usually less than train.

That's pretty great. I imagine having high speed rail in US from Boston to Tampa. I would use it even if it's comparable to flight and not even considering 1/2 to 1/3 the price mentioned here. From DC to Tampa is about 900 miles. At 150mph would get there in 6 hours. Half a day worth and I can just sit there and be productive and not have to deal with uncomfortable feeling of take-off and landing and security etc. At 200mph it would be 4.5 hours. It would be transformative. But it's going to cost three times the amount to build as China and probably 3 times to built as well. It's also more environmentally cleaner option. Too bad.
