This is basically similar problem as our air defense site here in Indonesia. We built our NASAMS site in the middle of populated area, back then it was occupied by old S-75/SA-2 Guideline. The location was still sparsely populated so the dropped off 1st stage of the SAM is expected not to fall into any population center. But now it's essentially a city.

@@g43654 well of course. the situation in the cold war was that china was enemies with both super powers and it nearly went to nuclear war at one point or another with both. the soviets, the us and even taiwan use to fly into chinese territorial space every other day, like not just close to but actually over cities and military sites(theres a U2 spy plane on display in china right now). as such rocket sites have to be built inland, china doesnt have the luxury of a massive, barely populated land to the east like siberia is to russia nor did it have a massive navy to secure a coastal launch site from spys and attacks. and rocket launches are very much important to national security. the potential for some booster to fall on houses is far outweighed by the additional security brought via spy sats, improved rockets, communication sats and others. the situation is different now of course, with a full nuclear triad, the soviets gone, replaced by a friendly russia, and much improved navy and armed forces over all, china has built the new launch site, the old rockets are being phased out, and new generation of non-toxic fuel rockets are being designed and built.

one of the major reason is china lack of oversea "space and earth control station" for the most of last century. in order to maximize the window to control its satellite, it is only possible to extend the time which satellites are within range of control after launch. By considering the shape of its country and the orbit of the earth. It would be only like to build mid west or south west of china, which is rather heavily populated compare to most part in US (not so much comparing to south east part of China). However, as the rocket parts are more controllable and new satellite sites and oversea "space and earth control stations" has been build, such accident havent took place for at least 15 years if i recalled correctly. Side not, Australia is shutting down one of the Chinese oversea "space and earth control station"

The launches from Vandenberg AFB are mainly polar orbits (the trajectory sends the rocket and its payload over the Earth’s poles. The last retrograde orbit (westward trajectory) from Vandenberg was in 2010.

The Image in 4:52 really describes working in China better than anything I have seen so far. Young men that look like they belong to school, don’t let them fool you. Most certainly all of them have a masters degree. But still they just graduated and that’s why one is working and the other two have this „apprentice style“ look on their faces :D

That orange plume you saw in the Long March 4b video is Dinitrogen Tetroxide, which is the oxidizer, and they use UDMH as the propollent. Both are extremely toxic, and if you physically can see the plume, you're probably too close. (never mind that both are also carcengic, that really won't be your primary concern). The reason why Space Force launches from Vandenberg is that most of those are Polar Orbit, where you don't want to have the horizontal vector.

@Readyplayer113 жыл бұрын
You forgot to mention that launching from a higher up area also gives a large boost in efficiency and launching from higher up also just gives you less distance to go to space. The reason that most space ports are on the coast is because they want to be able to barge the booster instead of shipping by land where there are space constraints. Sure nasa doesn't want to hit anyone but they are able to terminate the launch anyway so its not that bad launching from the interior.

is that one of the reasons china wants to include taiwan desperately? you see a launch site in taiwan is kind of perfect for them.
@KikogamerJ23 жыл бұрын
True it would be much easier to launch rockets widhoout civilian causalities but the main reason China wants Taiwan is for defence since they fear America could easily invade China by taiwan
@martenkahr33653 жыл бұрын
That's rather low on the list of their reasons. The biggest one is that Taiwan is ruled by the non-communist government that lost the Chinese civil war and is a bit of a thorn in the side of the Chinese Communist Party's legitimacy. The second biggest is that Taiwan is closely allied with the US (not like Taiwan has any other options, besides surrendering to China and getting annexed), and could plausibly serve as a staging ground for an invasion of mainland China.
