We cook galore on Christmas day so not surprising that some restaurants would be closed. Christmas day is family day and restaurant staff need time with family 😊

In SA most people go back to the rural areas for december holidays, that is where you'll find celebrations. The big cities are mostly quiet, and those who have to stay for work are never happy about it at all. Happy New Year 🎉

All these People saying we all go to rural areas, not all South Africans have rural homesteads, especially those from Gauteng townships and old townships in general like uMlazi, Soweto, Kwa-Mashu etc.
@crude-za2 жыл бұрын
We normally have our festive seasons in the provinces, not in the cities. In December, the big cities are mostly empty, except the cities with beaches like Durban and cape town. You should head to the provinces in December and you will have a good time.

It's actually 50/50 split right in the middle. The one half still goes all out, they go to rural areas, buy Christmas clothes and presents and have large lunches hence why Johannesburg is almost a ghost town during Christmas. Even the ones that don't necessarily have "rural homelands" and are from the cities, some do still carry that getting together with family and celebrate Christmas culture. The other half is basically over Christmas for various reasons, even some who are Christians do not necessarily celebrate Christmas anymore and see it as any other day.

I'm from South Africa, I'm 24 years old but I can't recall the last time I celebrated christmas. I was probably 12 years old. And I'm from Durban. Ever since then christmas to me is just like any other day. Besides getting visitors and I don't like visitors. We celebrate New Years though

You must know age plays a big factor in the way you experience things, as we get older we experience things differently, also what frame of mind we are in; you in a foreign country so the experience will be different than seeing your family, friends and community come together and be happy, it just hits different, and like they say, there's no plave like home, but as you meet more friends and build relationships, it will be different

Nigerians want to be seen that they came back with money that put pressure on them and they end up getting money in bad ways.While South Africans go back to their villages to rest and enjoy families. Cooking and sharing with neighbors is a must in South Africa they will feed you whether they know you or not. Those who stay behind in cities either they working or they do not have villages to go back to. They also believe that Christmas is for children's adult sit back cook and relax with family. New year is spent with friends. That is what I learned in South Africa.

SA labour laws are the reason why restaurants are closed on public holidays including Easter, Christmas and New Year's. Businesses make enough money during the rest of the year, unions have ensured there are guaranteed days that workers rest on. Checkout how packed stores and restaurants are on the eve of this holidays, that's when they make extra bonuses.

Why would anyone want to go out on Christmas...That's the time to be with eyour whole family and if not all your friends and nearest and dearest people... Not a time to be all over the street and nightclubs... There's New Year's Eve, 16 December and every other December Day after the 16th!!!!
