Decades from now, we'll see if this thesis is correct or not. In the meantime however, Russia is engaged in a simmering war with Ukraine in the Donbas region, located in eastern Ukraine. This war has been the most violent seen in Europe in the 21st century and has been going on for well over 7 years now, with historical causes that go back even further. I created a 26 minute long documentary explaining the entire course of the conflict and it's available to watch right now exclusively on Nebula at this link: bit.ly/3fs3n0D If that sounds like something you'd be interested in watching, go ahead and check it out and sign up for the CuriosityStream/Nebula bundle deal which is running a massive 41% discount through the end of May, which is only $11.79 for an entire year of both CS and Nebula with access to 3 exclusive RLL documentaries so far. I live in Russian Karelia. Say what you want, but climate change does affect us. When I was a kid 25 years ago, I had to wear three layers of clothes during winter. It was so bad that on a winter day you'd see about 50 people on the streets in a city with 250k population. Nowadays I wear same light clothes during autumn, spring and winter. It's still freezing, especially in February, but it's not even remotely close to how it used to be.

None of these places are huge as Russia, which is already a millitary superpower, and has a strong economy. 80% of Russia's land is frozen and global warming would make them probably most powerful country in recent history. Canada has a lot of islands which will be hard to take resource from, scandanavia is full of mountains, Alaska won't make USA powerful again because their mainland will be on fire, southern south America will be on fire too because it isn't too cold there and it will take a lot of time to take resources from antartica

Yup. King for a day. There's more to climate change than average temperatures. It screws with all the weather systems too, who knows what the hell happens to Russia short term, but long term, well consider the sea level rise, which will be ongoing, so where you building your ports for distribution of all this? How much of the Arctic coast gets inundated? What about the Siberian methane being released from the permafrost, that is a rapid global warming accelerator. Does the Taiga continue to function as it has under such extreme circumstances? And all the developed economies in ruin, so who exactly buys these materials from Russia? One significant hole in this theory: the climate types that far north can be entirely novel. This mostly has to do with the solar radiation of these latitudes. At these high latitudes, the absolute temperature range will increase to be similar to the current temperate zones, but then it becomes a matter of timing. Since the latitude is higher than current temperate zones, the sun is weaker, meaning the energy received at such high latitudes will have different timing characteristics to those farther south. It's the reason why despite Britain and southeast Australia having the same climate type under the Köppen-Geiger classification scheme, the climate of Victoria is far hotter in absolute highest temperatures: it lies at a lower latitude. There can be some completely unaccounted for climate types if this metric is used as the defining characteristic of a climate.

I couldn't disagree more. Climate change will cause so much havoc on the environment, so much disarray on global economy that the concept of "superpower" will cease to exist. Even if massive swaths of land in Canada and Russia become more usable with warming trends, the rest of the planet will be in such a mess, there will be no economy left to sustain anything that resembles a superpower. Indeed, those areas of Siberia will prosper, but the disastrous consequences of global warming will overshadow any economic gain.

@Awesome Gaming Russia is actually very vey hot during summer season. This summer we were dying in Moscow because of unbelievable heat. Temperature was up to 104 fahrenheit!! And it was not only about Moscow , the situation in Siberia was the same. In Novosibirsk temperature was somewhere around 40-41 Celsius. So , as a russian, a can state that it as definetely a myth that we freeze all the time. We actually know what is REAL heat.

Actually, Vladivostok won't struggle from sea level rise a lot - the city is placed on hills, so only some percent of the city will possibly go underwater. Even if all ice melts, and the sea rises, the level will increase just for 60-70 meters. Our usual height is above 100-200m. So, same landskape is usual for many seashores in east and north - some western places could be fludded, but the opened north trade route can outplay it, I think

@@shuriksvoboda6883 I though this as well. Crimea might be an issue since the Black Sea IS connected to the world's oceans via the Mediterranean Sea, but the Caspian Sea is a landlocked sea. One could argue that there might be melting glaciers and permafrost feeding the rivers and tributaries that feed into it, rising its levels, but it won't be the same as the global oceans rising due to the melting of the North and South Arctic/Antarctic ices. Though I guess we also don't know how far things would rise anyway, it's unlikely to rise over much of Russia.

You should do a Part 2 to this because much of how Russia benefits can apply to Canada as well (with some differences of course: shorter NW Passage, more fresh water, eclipsing a declining US, mineral-rich but poorly-soiled Can Shield, an ice-free Hudson Bay shipping route, Northern inland river valleys like the Peace, etc.)

@frostynorth3 жыл бұрын
The benefits could apply to Canada, but Canada won't take advantage of them. We still suffer from a predominant "staples thesis" mindset that means we don't undertake ambitious national projects or try to develop our domestic economy. Plus, as climate change is opening up the arctic, the USA has taken the stance that it's better to nerf Canada's position there and leave that space open for Russia to fill, than to have a reliable ally in the arctic. Canada will develop the arctic somewhat, but only to the extent that it develops any part of the country - to extract and export raw resources at a discount, and stay a mediocre economy.
@EpicxEvolution3 жыл бұрын
@@planefan082 The United States is not going to annex Canada. Canada is its own nation, a great ally, and very similar to the United States (on a cultural level). Canada would have to choose to unite, and [currently] I see absolutely no reason for them too. Honestly, if I were Canadian I'd be opposed to the idea. That said, don't think that the United States _couldn't_ occupy Canada because of "skilled snipers" and an air force. The proximity of the United States to Canada would likely cause us to see an occupation at a speed that hasn't occured since the German blitzkrieg of France. The United States has 8x the population, 32x the military spending, and Canada's most populous cities are all in close proximity to a border much too long to have any hope of defending. Irregardless, Canadian water to the United States is fairly small-scale in the grand scheme of things, and most of that is bottled water. That said, in the future this definitely may not be the case, we'll see how climate change goes. Moving on, the United States electricity trade from Canada is also small-scale. Only half of US states import anything from Canada, then, it's really only important for some areas in the US northeast. The big trade between the United States and Canada is oil. The stereotype that the United States goes wherever the oil is seems fitting.

In the middle there is (or topographically should be) a huge lake in a central valley. However that valley has also mega canyons according to NASA. None of that topography is relevant, since the landmass will shift upwards after the ice melts anyway. I bet after a thousands years or so, the central valley would have hundreds of lakes, like the landscape of Finland.

Rising temperatures could open millions of once frigid acres to the plow, officials, farmers and scientists predict, however if we're looking at places like Nunavut, Yukon and the NW territories becoming suitable for farming, by then that would mean the greater effect of climate change would be overshadowed by the frequent storms, droughts, heatwaves, blackouts, etc. that Canada's major cities, i.e. Toronto, Ottowa, Vancouver, Victoria, Richmond, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Saskatoon would have to face. Extra farmland is nearly useless and will not make profits if well-developed cities and towns are going to get hit hard by climate change. Leave it be. Countries can adopt rooftop gardens, hydroponics and aquaponics for their agriculture, and whatever new technologies come along to make the future sustainable in order to help humans adapt to the Earth in a manner that doesn't disturb nature in the least of ways, not like that'll ever happen.
