I surveyed 26 freshmen college students to see their opinions on high school vs. college classes.
Students from the following schools: (California Polytechnic State University | San Diego State University | Stanford | University of California Davis | Earlham College | Santa Barbara City College | University of California San Diego | Butte College | University of San Diego | Irvine Valley College | University of California Santa Cruz | California State University Chico)

I think this survey would drastically change if they surveyed by major ; them STEM majors know what hard is

Because in high school, they have you doing trigonometry, which is only going to be required, if you’re doing some sort of physics or engineering.

It honestly depends on the person. I remember asking my STEM course graduate teacher how college is like for him and how difficult it was. His answer was "it was alright for me" So it really depends on the mental capacity of the learner. And if you're finding what you're taking difficult, then maybe it's just not for you. There's so much to offer in life, you don't have to be miserable for the rest of your days. Much love, and best of luck~❤

College is so fucking stressful. Not to scare anyone but its true. He only asked freshman, video was uploaded during the first semester, there's a switch after first semester (which was a breeze). Responsibility, money, food, just overall you're choices are up to you. Just focus.

I agree. Freshmen are the worst to ask about this because many of them are away from their parents for the first time and have the freedom to skip class. I went straight to community college after high school where there were no distractions, no friends, and no real on campus life like university. There were way more serious minded mature adults. We all used rate my professor to choose great professors, but if you had to work and take care of a family you were sometimes out of luck and had to choose who fit your schedule. I do wish I was able to work more during college because my family nor I had a lot of money for important necessities. I had a 3.8 GPA during that time because I studied about 60 hours a week. I worked one job during college as a dishwasher at Golden corral, but they let me go and i applied to several other jobs, but none of them would hire me. It kind of took away from what I accomplished. But back to the topic, freshmen are very misleading on this topic and it can cause you to choose very bad professors. I am not a fan of professors who are rated high because you're allowed to skip class. I want a real professor. The best professors at the university i transferred to had lower ratings because freshmen took them for gen ed and tried to have their way. Community college was a great decision because it allowed me to smoothly transition from an academic standpoint. I was more focused and did well. Made Dean's list right out the gate because I was able to sniff through reviews of freshmen and avoid these kind of teachers. When a professor was rated high at community college, he was rated high because he was a good professor. The reviews went into examples about how the professor ran the course, his expectations, and the way he constructed exams. All things that give detail on why he received that rating. In university they will tell you that a professor is good because the workload is easy and you have no homework, which actually hurts if you need extra points to boost your grade. Exams were not really based on what he actually covered.

It depends on what school you attend and what is your major. When I was a math major and started my Undergrad at a UC school in Riverside, I would rate my first quarter schedule as tough as my senior year of high school (if not tougher). I took Freshmen Composition 1 (which was close to the same difficulty as my AP Language and Composition class in my senior year of high school), Chem 1A (which was on par with AP Chemistry [maybe even tougher because I had a tough Chem professor], and Differential Calculus/Calculus 1 which was slightly easier than AP Calculus AB (That is because there was no Integral Calculus). FYI, I did not take AP Calculus AB in my senior year of high school. Instead, I took AP Statistics which was on par with Honors Precalculus in junior year. Also, my school ran on a quarter system. Plus, I had to take a Freshman Seminar (which is a transition class). Also, in my Freshman Composition class, I had to read a book and the book I read in that class was Moby Dick[which was a gargantuan sized book and had a plethora of SAT vocabulary words]. I dropped General Chemistry because I failed the midterm and so did the majority of my classmates. The professor even told the class if you fail the midterm, you are probably going to fail the final (because the final will be just as tough as the midterm, if not tougher). Plus, if you fail the final, you fail the class. I think I made a wise decision in dropping my Chem 1A class. Overall, I would say college was one step up from high school because I was in STEM. Of course, I graduated with a degree in Economics with a Concentration in Mathematics. But, still college was overall tougher than high school.

26 is a very small sample size and for STEM, especially for something like engineering, the classes will be much harder. Which makes sense as stem majors have lower gpas on average and likely did better in high school. Math and science simply become abstract and difficult to understand so I think most people in harder majors will find the classes to be harder.

It's easier if u live on campus. Harder to commute. Easier bc u can study at ur pace. Harder bc u have to be accountable for ur own learning. Easier when u take easy classes like humanities and such. Harder when u get into ur focused classes for ur major. Easier if you are good at adjusting to new classes and new environments each semester. Harder if having new classes, new people, new due dates and class environments every short semester triggers a little anxiety. It's different for everyone tbh

yes i have personal issue as well, like mental & physical health. During first 2 semester of engineering barely even want to survive, but i have determination tho.. Still make it until now i'm in 5th semester. I have to manage time & endure my pain (physical pain from chronic illnesses), but as i said i can make it so you probably can too, if you try hard and paying attention to small detail.

Bro, that some bad surveying when you don't classify the students nor have a wider population size(ain't that hard to ask people to chain links for surveys) A "college student" can be soo broad. Practice more on your surveying and research tactics.
@hp2546
@hp2546 9 ай бұрын
This right there is an example why college is easier because it is due to how many students don't have to put in surveying and research tactics. Many students get away with bad surveying. When I joined interactive design class at Cal State LA, we have to interview people and so we have to get our partners to pretend to be somebody they are not. So I am sure that guy needed to get his friend or family to pose as college students. Can't expect him to interview real strangers because doing survey would be a lot more harder. It is due to how students can get away being bad at surveying in some class and still get good grades out of it. This example is more like when students have leeway to be lazy, that is part of a reason why they can claim college is easy.

Heavily disagree with this notion. For reference I had a pure AP and honors class schedule in high school, but UC Berkeley is way harder than HS by a far margin. Tho, this might just be due to the fact that im an engineering pre med major
