The subject of this movie is about the injection proces itself, the way it is controlled and managed - it is not about the engine servising and it is certainly not about a vehicle with the engine with common rail system servicing and durability. The movie gives the information about what is the real purpose that this system was built for. What are the main advantages over the classic injection pumps in terms of the injection process controlling and managing.

Some debatable comments on here for sure. Common rail and multi shot injection improves power greatly and reduces knock and emissions but as has been said, they likely wouldn’t last anywhere near as long as the older mechanical pumps without periodic intervention( especially with old in line pumps) and that’s mainly because the clearances in newer systems are so much finer and the diesel filtration has not kept up with the technology and we are not filtering the diesel down enough so over time your pilot injectors ‘mud up’ and stop working, usually stuck open so fuel flow thro that injector is no longer controlled and is rushing back thro the return pipe…. That cheap test kit you can buy on fleabay is the easiest way to see it and changeout one instead of a full set which you’d need a mortgage for !!

Durability is a different topic. None of the mechanical injection pumps can measure up to Common rail in terms of the injection process accuracy. By this the greater power and economic are achieved. A knock in Diesel engine? You mistake the engines.....

The key factors why Common Rail is better in so many ways than mechanical injection pump.
@lznicu4 ай бұрын
They are not better, they are just performing better. A classic diesel will run forever with predictible problems, the common rail will not run forever and the problems are not predictible.

You contradict yourself in one sentence - better performing means common rail is better when it comes to injection process quality. A durability is a different story and it depends on the modern tendency of reducing durability of the entire vehicles, but this was not the topic in this movie. I am surprissed how many viewers don't understand such a simple subject and answers with their private prejudices and believes instead of a technical understanding...

The reason pressure timed fuel injection system stopped being used is because EPA took all the sulphur out of diesel fuel , the sulphur in the fuel was a lubricant for the high pressure pump and injectors without the sulfur lubricant the pump and injectors would fail in my opinion it was far superior to the electronic injection system used today , it was also a direct injection system injecting super high pressure fuel directly into the cylinder which atomized the fuel into a super fine mist that mix better with air giving a more complete burn of the fuel an air charge, most of the new electronic diesel fuel injection systems inject the fuel behind the intake valve at a lower pressure that isn't atomized as well giving a less complete burn of the fuel which means less power and more unburnt fuel in the exhaust creating more pollution , the pressure timed diesel injection system was the best diesel injection system ever used but won't work with no sulfur fuels

The lack of sulfur did not create any issues on the injection pump or injectors . The high sulfur contain in fuel have a negative effect on longevity of the engine [ rings/ cylinder walls ] . common rail did 2 positive things , much higher injection pressure , plus the possibility of multiple smaller injections , so better burning .

@@alaingillot4718 you are so wrong about sulfur being a lubricant for the pressure timed fuel injection system on diesel engines just Google it and I doubt very seriously rail fuel system comes close to making the pressure the pressure timed fuel injection system makes the injectors opened at around 15000 psi creating a super fine mist

It's not the common rail that gives better injection it's the electronic control.

What you say here makes no sens at all, as Common rail does not exist without electronics....
