Bagong Taon 2024, Bagong Basura!? (New Year, New Waste?!):
Massive Military Fuel Transfer from Controversial US Navy Storage Facility in Hawaii to the Philippines Sparks Questions
The massive military fuel transfer from US Navy-run Red Hill Underground Storage Facility in Honolulu, Hawaii to Subic, Philippines was met with questions from civil society organizations from both sides of the Pacific in a media forum on January 10, 2024 at Kamuning Bakery Cafe in Quezon City. Around 39 million gallons or around 40 percent of the Red Hill fuel is bound for Subic.
Below are the public statements of various civil society organizations...
LESSONS FROM RED HILL
In a statement entitled “10 Lessons from Hawai’i re: Red Hill Military Fuel Transfer to Subic Bay, Philippines “, Hawai’i Justice and Peace expounded on how the Red Hill Underground Storage Facility has impacted the most populated island of Hawaii where the facility is located only a hundred feet away from a major aquifer. They pointed out that Red Hill taught them that the military cannot be counted on to tell the truth.
For them, the US Navy repeatedly lied to the people of Hawai’i, including military families about the safety of the drinking water. The military did not admit to the fuel leak until people who lived nearby reported smelling fuel in their water. This endangered the lives of 93 thousand people, and the impact continues to be felt to this day. Now, millions of taxpayer monies are spent in decommissioning the Red Hill military storage facility.
To replace Red Hill, the US Navy will implement its “distributed fueling strategy” with [fuel] stocks [distributed] in several locations, ready for any eventuality.
QUESTIONS NEED ANSWERS
According to Stop the War Coalition Philippines, here are there questions: Is the fuel transfer something that our government has allowed? Or are they caught unaware? We fear that these war fuels will fuel more conflict and unrest since the US Navy has already admitted that it will be primarily used in accordance to “support operations in the South China Sea
Aside from health and environmental repercussions, the security risk posed by who will
ultimately use it and what will they use it for, who will be responsible for securing it, and where will it be eventually stored? These are questions that the public has to know since we are talking about massive amounts of dangerous, combustible substances.
We demand answers, accountability, and transparency in this matter that will impact the public.
The media forum was organized by Solidarity to Oppose Wars or Stop the War Coalition-Philippines, Hawai’i Justice and Peace, and held in cooperation with Kamuning Bakery Café. ###
About Red Hill Underground Storage Facility:
It is a World War II-era facility and has fallen into deep disrepair over the years. It can hold 250 million gallons of fuel for US military ships, and aircraft in its twenty underground tanks. It is estimated that around 2 million gallons may have leaked over the past eighty years.
In the most recent oil spill in 2021 resulted in the contamination of water systems catering to 90 thousand people in Honolulu, including military servicemen and their families.
