The employee counted the items in the cart and kept saying, "You have 19 items in the cart and your receipt only shows 18!" I finally pointed out that my coat was not a part of what I purchased that day. They are absolutely looking for theft.

they aren’t looking for theft, more like they’re looking to see if the person at the register scanned everything. being that i worked for costco for almost 3 years i would know. it’s called a “door audit” and it’s only when something isn’t scanned, you can’t get stuff past the registers without MULTIPLE employees seeing you. and if they wanted to stop you for stealing you would know because security would be waiting

Oh, come on, they are definitely looking for theft. I'm not saying those other reasons aren't possibly why they check your receipt, but let's face it 99% of it is because of theft. Also, they're allowed. If you are part of a membership club grocery place, then they have the right to check your receipt. If it's Walmart, you don't by law have to show your receipt . However if you don't show your receipt they may hold you up or call the police and make it an inconvenience for you.

Problem what there supposed to do but they either tell me go ahead without receipt or I show them it from a distance from where they can’t even read it or I give it to them they take a quick glance and then let me go
