Question 1: 1) Agricultural based economies will have larger families to help around the house 2) Economies that move away from agricultural and shift to more service based economies will have smaller families due to the rising living expenses Question 2: IMR is the infant mortality rate and it looks at the amount of children, under 1 years of age, who die. The TFR is the total fertility rate and it shows the average amount of children a women has. Often times if the IMR of a country is high the TFR will be high, this is due to the fact that families expect to lose children. If the TFR does not decrease as the IMR goes down we will see more children living and a population boom could occur. Question 3: Crude Birth Rate, total amount of live births in a year/ 1,000 people. Crude Death Rate, total amount of deaths in a year / 1,000 people Question 4: Political Factors: 1) Governments can create laws limiting family sizes 2) Governments can create tax incentives and use propaganda to motivate citizens to have more children. Social Factors: 1) When society offers women more opportunities in society it reduces the average family size. 2) Societies that emphasize education and health care lower their TFR and IMR, which decreases their population growth rate and increases the life expectancy. Question 5: As women gain more opportunities in society we see the NIR decrease. This is because women are allowed to attend school, get a job, and participate in society. This decreases the amount of time they have to raise a family and allows them to have more opportunities in life.
