Thats common practice. I do it also since i realised it improved my skills. And im by far not a good player. Its not a special thing from Ronaldo... even freetime player do this. Without knowing the fact. It comes naturally. Often if kids grows out of his shoes, but not willing to buy new ones. I go by 0.5 inches undersice in USA scale. In europe i go from 46,5 to 45/45.5.
