I actually was on a cruise that left from the east coast of the USA (I think it was New York City or Baltimore but I can’t remember). We sailed right through hurricane Irene and I remember it being a blast since I was a kid haha. The ship would dip crazy low and you’d feel completely weightless as it went down, and then it would go back up and you’d feel like you weighed a thousand pounds. My siblings and I jumped up entire staircases when the ship was on its way down lol. Half of the ship was completely seasick though so that must’ve been awful for them, but for us we don’t get seasick so it ended up being fun!

The Costa Concordia sank because the captain violated company and nautical rules by sailing too close to the coastline known for its dangerous, rock laden shoreline, so that he could show off to friends on shore. He was also one of the first to flee the ship hours before as his crew rescued the passengers with a minimum loss of life. I believe that he went to prison for that one.

Some more context: Since the Maître D's (Sister?) relative was on the island the captain was trying to be nice to him and got closer than he should. Edit: This is more of a theory maybe but, it could be a reason for how he got a bit closer.

there were no company rules about that and carnival costas parent company had no rules about deviating from the route in fact they encouraged saluting which boosted sales and aprooval isnt required to deviate less than 15 miles from route and yes he did get closer than he should but jacob rusli bin (helmsman) didnt understand orders from the captain and got 700 meters closer to the shore and when they were steering near the rock captain sad midhip but the helmsman kept turning.

It's also worth noting that the Costa Concordia is kind of a bad example for demonstrating the safety of modern cruise ships, as she was in water only 46 feet deep, so she couldn't completely sink even if the hull were cut open bow to stern. Rescuers had over 24 hours because she was just left sticking up out of the water; she'd already "sank" as far as she could sink.

The Costa Concordia hit the bottom of the sea and because of that it didn't completely sank. There was still a lot of people on board when that happened. Also rescue was right there since it was close to the land. It would be a much worse catastrophe if it happened in the middle of nowhere. The Titanic was in the middle of the Atlantic with the seafloor almost 4000 meters bellow it. Without any rescue nearby (there is a theory that there was a ship near but for a number of reasons it ignored the distress signal). And the water was extremely cold, quickly killing a lot of people of hypothermia. Ocean liners are actuality faster and better at handling bad weather. It is just that they don't make economical sense anymore, airplanes does a much better job of crossing oceans.

I almost wonder if we could model the safety of ocean travel by the sinkings of container ships. Model each container ship as holding 3000-5000 hypothetical passengers and assume a 3-5 hour evacuation period, and, based on the actual time for the ship to sink, model the approximate number of deaths. Then we could see how safe sea travel would be if airplanes didn't exist.

The Costa Concordia didn’t sink slowly due to its design at all. The only reason it sank slowly is because it ran aground and came to rest on it’s side (which made normal lifeboat usage impossible). Also the hole in the side of the ship was 160 ft not 16 ft. I got this all off wikipedia in about 10 minutes. Do your research guys.

5:30 So the iceberg ripped a hole around the entire hull and credited the White star line with 1,400' of rip to use at a later date? Or was it a, "Use it or lose it", situation, one that forced the iceberg to make 1 full lap around the ship, then go an additional 7/8 of the way around? 6:16 300' and 16' aren't even in the realm of similar, not to mention one ship was in the coastal shallows(approx. 45' deep), the other was in the middle of the Atlantic(approx. 12,400' deep). the situations you're trying to compare aren't comparable. The Titanic took 3 hours to completely sink. The Costa Concordia didn't completely sink at all. It actually sat above water for 2.5 years, before being re-floated and towed away to be scrapped. If the ships swapped accident locations, the stories tied to the ships swap respectively. The results of both collisions were determined by the location, the ship is basically irrelevant. This channel used to do better. The constant conflicting statements and simple errors that could have been easily caught and fixed are consistently becoming more common.
@WhatsEndoDoing
@WhatsEndoDoing Жыл бұрын
This is true. The Costa Concordia ended up resting on a shallow part off the coast of the island of Giglio. Also, everyone had massive luck that the winds actually blew the Concordia towards the shore instead of away. Although, even with those facts in mind, a huge part of this catastrophe was the Captain Francesco Schettino. The man waited multiple hours until he told the passengers to evacuate the vessel. Then, when he did, he embarked a Lifeboat with many of the passengers still onboard! He told the prosecutors later that he "slipped" into a lifeboat. The captain is forced to remain on the bridge until all passengers have been rescued. When he got back on land, he didn't try to get back on board, he just watched the rescue efforts do their job.

5:31 3000 feet is quite long of a hole for a ship with a length of 800 feet. Also the damage caused by the collision was several smaller gaps opening up no more than a few inches between the hull plates. The longest gap was around 50 feet. If the damage would have been a 300 ft long hole in the ship, it would have sank in minutes, likely killing everyone on board, not over the course of 2 hours and 40 minutes.

As someone who lives and works on a cruise ship, I can confirm a lot of the ‘facts’ in this video are untrue and poorly researched. Also most of the fatalities on the Concordia were due to the crew not being prepared to deal with emergency and so allowed passengers to use elevators during the emergency, resulting in them being trapped and drowning inside the shafts.

You confuse the purpose of an ocean liner vs a cruise ship. A cruise ship can’t keep up on a regular schedule across the Atlantic through all weather conditions. It simply wouldn’t be able to do that without delays. The QM2 has a far better hull coefficient than any cruise ship out there as well. Since this is one of the shorter videos; I’ll still give it a 4/5 stars since the graphics are still on point.

The Costa Concordia sank not because of technical error, but human error. The captain sailed a little to close to the island to impress his girlfriend (The captain was like in his late 30's) and most of the deaths were due too the people trapped in the elevators while the power went out as well as older people who fell off or just people who slipped. The captain "fell off the ship and into a lifeboat" before he knew everyone was safe and leaving people to die before being sentenced to prison. The reason it was on its side is because the captain (despite all he did) was able to steer it onto a ledge so It would not go down fully. You're welcome for nobody who asked

They try to avoid bad weather but sometimes a storm develops too quickly and the ship is forced to go through, the crew will try to go for the weaker part of any storm or hurricane but one miscalculation could have the ship getting badly damage, it already happened several times with Royal Caribbean ships.

They avoid what the ship can. Our last cruise we went over 60miles past the port, basically sat still for an hour, then went into port a few hours later, to avoid a storm system. They build in extra time, in case of route changes, when they can. Still felt a bit of rain here and there, but it’s the tropics and it’ll rain a little. It’s a fun vacation type, but its probably gonna rain.

A few months ago I was boarding a smaller charter boat and I got to witness my first cruise ship up close and personal docked beside us, I’ve always seen them out in the bay or on the horizon, I knew the were big but I hadn’t really experienced just how massive they are The ship I was boarding had 6 passenger decks, a full casino, dance floor, bars, a restaurant etc And it was absolutely minuscule in comparison, the highest point on the charter boat was about 1/3 the height of the lowest railing on the cruise ship.

You may want to double check your facts and conclusions on the wrecks of Titanic and Costa Concordia because, although the impacts happened under similar circumstances, their situations and the way they were handled were completely different. The Titanic barely had time to deploy the lifeboats they had, despite starting the evacuation process shortly after the iceberg impact. So any more lifeboats would have simply went down with the ship and would have been useless. The captain of the Costa Concordia grossly delayed the evacuation process and rendered a large number of his lifeboats useless as the ship had listed too far by the time the order was given to abandon ship. He also failed to send out a distress signal that would have gotten help quickly. And the ship did not “stay afloat”. Luckily for the people still on board after all the usable lifeboats were deployed, it sank in just 26 feet of water and rested on its side on the seabed, allowing them to stay safely out of the cold water (the 50 degree water can still cause death in as little as 30 minutes without any exposure protection). Had it been in deep water, it certainly would have capsized and sunk completely, causing greater loss of life. The Titanic’s passengers and crew were victims of circumstance, but nobody should have died on the Costa Concordia.

I went on a few cruises with my family years ago as a kid. I hated it every time. But only because of the tiny bedrooms and the lack of TV and wifi. If you ignore that stuff it’s a nice experience. The food was always great and there were a ton of enjoyable activities to do. Cruises are essentially just fancy vacation resorts in the middle of the ocean. If you’re the kind of person that likes to sit back at the pool instead of going sightseeing on a regular vacation, a cruise can be a nice experience.

Taking a cruise with only a thousand people on board the ship is awesome!! Feels like you practically have the whole thing to yourself. That's what was so wonderful about cruising when the industry first restarted after the Covid-19 lock down. Sadly, now it's almost back to full capacity but the flip side is ALL the ships are back sailing.

I was once on a cruise that went through a huge storm. The winds were wailing outside and the ship was rocking very hard. I remember being in the club all night and having to walk uphill towards the bar lol. If u put ur drink down it would slide off of the table almost immediately. Luckily the crew remained very calm and assured everyone that everything was fine and to not worry.

Well the Costa Concordia disaster would have been much worse if the ship drifted in deeper waters. Since the list made half the lifeboats unusable trapping hundreds of people on the ship. But because the ship was in shallow waters it did not sink fully saving all those people. While the Titanic during her sinking stood at a even keel for most of the sinking letting all her lifeboats leave the ship safely.

It sat on it's side. They went back for body recovery and it was heavily looted because of the on board casino before they got security for it. Eventually they stripped it. If I remember right. The whole thing happened because the captain was this under qualified party boy playing around. He got closer than what was considered safe to shore to blow the horns, just to entertain people.

How exactly would a very low center of gravity lead to the ship sinking further into the water? The weight is still the same, so it should have the same draft for the same buoyancy. Also, ocean liners are actually more capable of handling a storm, because of their tall freeboard. Furthermore, comparing cruise ships to ocean liners over a century old is a bit unfair, cruise ships are only so safe because a lot of lessons were lerned from the liners. And Costa Concordia didn't even sink completely because the water was too shallow for that
