CT primary is energized then CT secondary should never be open circuited. Reason: when CT is in normal condition the CT Primary winding and secondary winding both produces its own MMF. And both this MMF opposes each other according to Lenz law and because of this reason the net MMF magnitude is very less and this net emf magnetises the core of the CT. Now if the secondary winding of the CT is opened the current in the secondary winding will be zero and also the mmf produced in the secondary winding will become zero. And because of this reason the net MMF in the core due to primary winding MMF of the CT as there is no opposition to the Primary winding MMF. Because of this reason the fulx produced in the core will be so much in magnitude that it will Saturate the core of the CT. And also High magnitude of Voltage will be produced in the secondary winding of the CT which will cause insulation failure in the secondary side which will cause electrical hazard to the operator in the secondary side. Also eddy current and hysteresis losses increases abnormally in the core which causes increase in the temp in the CT and hence the CT blast due to intense pressure on the CT which also contains oil. This causes harm to the operators.
