I tried Obsidian. It did not stick, but im planning to give it a few more tries. Some opinion of mine: Cons: - Copying sample code from official documentation into your notes does not make sense. Thats why we have documentation. It does not help you know more. Hands on experience and delayed repetition/knowledge recall does. + as official documentations/APIs are changeing, your notes are getting outdated. - It can give you a false reassurement, that your knowledge is growing, but deep inside you know that every note of yours could be a really simple google search - For me it was really time consuming making notes any better than my sources from the Internet. - Hence I found myself always using google instead using my notes. Pros: - In theory linking notes (new knowledge with existing ones ) together is a great way to deepen knowledge. - Its free

To your first con, it helps because sometimes docs can be extremely large, and you may need to know and remember 1 specific thing. But yeah, I agree docs will be better, especially when things change. :)

@VakkaHun You first con is actually not true and is in fact a big advantage for a lot of people. Obsidian is available offline meaning you dont have to do a google search to check the documentation. Yes the online documentation is ofcourse useful but if all you need to know is the syntax of a command, why do a google search when you can do it locally faster?

I agree that taking notes just for the sake of it results in the person never utilizing the notes because it becomes too cluttered. Also it doesn't help with retention because you're just writing things down instead of internalizing them Notes should be for links to resources so that you don't forget or saving posts that may be deleted in the future. Other than that I rarely keep notes

Great Video! I've tried a number of approaches for organising technical notes, I don't think I have ever invested enough time to make them part of my developer workflow, what I do know is I really struggle with anything that I have to keep organised e.g. folders or different note books. Really enjoyed watching something a little bit different too. Thanks 😊

Up until now, I never ever had to use this tool. However, I keep hearing about how great it is... So I'm giving it a fair try... Hopefully I'll remember this video and post an update about how I feel after 1 week.

I have searched almost all the comments under your videos, Amichai. No one has asked you a question about how to draw multi-colored lines instead of single-colored lines in ZoomIt. I would appreciate it if you would write back in the comments how to do it. Btw, this video is great! I have structured my knowledge base in folders and markdown files where I store my code snippets. This will help me a lot to organize the resource!

Spoiler: you might easyly forgot what files are existed and may create a duplicate. My favorite approach to obsidian file structuring is to use classical domain / vertical sliced approach

I tried obsidian and found it to lack a lot of basic features. Perhaps with plugins I can make it work but the time that it takes to set everything up and relearn keyboard shortcuts it's not worth it. I decided to just use vscode which I am already familiar with, has great search, markdown etc

I found the following plugin for drawio: github.com/zapthedingbat/drawio-obsidian You can always link from obsidian to wesites/resources or export content and drop it in your vault

Nice video, I still don't understand what Obsidian does better than Notion (besides using lokal files)? Links and Backlinks are also possible in Notion...

For me, the biggest benefit is having markdown files, native vim support and having the files stored locally. On top of that, you have over a thousand open source plugins (or you can develop your own if a functionality is missing)

I takes ages to navigate your files link after link inside Notion since they are not local. Also Obsidian seems very responsive. When there is not something in the native app that is really needed -> someone do a pluggin for it. I remember when I had several open tabs inside Notion. After work I close notion -> next day open notion, only first tab is now open. Now they solve the problem but I had to wait so long it was a pain. There is lots of small stuff like that where if something is bothering, you don't have to wait for the obsidian / notion team to develop the solution -> somone, or you, will. Also like that my files are readable outside of the app. I am building so much knowledge into those file, would be a shame not to be able to access it if obsidian / notion shutdown or even worse, the company die. As a developer I prefer the obsidian editor, even tho notion one is not that bad it feels pretty slow next to obsidian one

I like the way how obsidian is fully customizable. It isn't a pre-made solution like Notion. In Obsidian you can make the workflow or almost any aspect of it your way, specially if you have some coding skills.

Are you using vim motions on a daily basis? I tried to use obsidian for my personal knowledge base. Part of it includes linking to github repos or yt videos. I didn't find a way to open or preview links or videos inside obsidian, without opening it in the browser 😐

I love obsidian but I really don't see the point of copy pasting things from a search engine into your vault. Sure, you can now access it offline, but you can literally just google it again? There is a real risk your vault gets full of copy pasted stuff and then it becomes hard to surface your actual notes

Great work from the developers working on Obsidian. However, as a developer, I don't like unnecessary complexity.

Totally agree. Obsidian in my opinion is like Vim to VSCode. Why wasting the time when you can utilise it somewhere else in a more useful way … You need to install tons of plugins and each plugin needs to be maintained by whoever. Rather just use notion and life is good

I promise you, if you get version 1.3.7 it's dead simple - no complexity. (That's what I use) This new version they introduced does not work.

It's not complicated at all. You can just make it complicated. It's more powerful than notion because you can literally tailor it to you.i use both tho. Notion is better for databases and stuff like docs, collaboration etc.i love notion lol But if you are building a body of work, want to write a novel or academic research, obsidian is far superior.
