Why Devil Survivor 2 is Worth Experiencing

First bought the game while stationed in Japan for the Navy. Half the year our ship was out doing missions and this game was my first megaten experience. Got about 27 hours playtime and just now busted out the 3DS after 10 years. Started where i left off on the 1700 mark 3rd day and spend about 3 hours getting re-acquainted with the game. Just starting Day 4 and loving the game after Metaphor Refantazio!

This game gets too much shit for no really good reason imo, it was the first megaten game i bought with record breaker and i properly beat it last summer and had my mind blown by how much it deviated from the megaten standard. Really really good game that id legitimately recommend to anyone, the music fucking bangs and the preventable death thing is done better here than in 1 imo not even gonna lie, i cried during joes fate cause shit was just too real

i mean,the characters is pretty much hit and miss,more into miss tbh,the concept of story is great,and i can say the opening is good to grab me enough to the story,but it falls down after that,theres some stupid things happen in the story and some execution of concept feels meh and the characters let the story down,Fate system also weird its DIFFERENT from social links,there are some great fate like joe and there some boring like ronaldo and hinako. aside from story and characters gripes everything are pretty good tho,the music slaps,the gameplay is improved version of desu1,and the boss fights is really cool and some of them is fair(i dare to say the final boss is really good final boss battle). triangulum is cool tho :/.

I actually think the "preventable death" thing was worse than DeSu1. But not for the actual plot, in fact, it's nice how there's a good clear reason for it (I forgot why the Laplace Mail and death clocks are a thing in 1... was it Naoya wanting to help?) but it's not as atmospheric because there's way more focus on the Septentriones, JP's, factions, etc., (in contrast to 1 where using those features to survive WAS the plot for 2/3 of the game). Really, you could remove it from the story and not much would change, besides one character arc, and warning you about one choice later that you could potentially see as mostly harmless otherwise. (Which could've been avoided with, well, better writing) The fates are also easily avoidable. Like, scenes like Joe's fate are great, but if you do beeline the events for the death (and why wouldn't you?! Do you really think it's a good time to chat with the team?) you're never going to see it. To be fair, I remember DeSu1 being mostly linear (or I got lucky?) too, but the one time it wasn't, it's actually tricky to save people. What you should do isn't well conveyed (despite the dialogue *really* trying to), but at least it's interesting compared to anything in 2. I think death videos were actually one of the few things handled better in the Animation, even if there's way more that wasn't. I do also really like how different it is from Megaten standards, yeah. Especially how factions aren't just represented by one character and everyone in the cast adds something of their own (Edit: A dialogue between Airi and Fumi always springs to mind first, as well as Joe and Makoto). Besides one ending, which is instead great for being the "alternative" option. I think DeSu1 and DeSu2 are both peak handling of alignment (of the games I played), in two very different ways, with DeSu1 being Nocturne and DeSu2 being the conventional SMT formula (with maybe some more choices before the split) Basically the only complaint is Ronaldo clownin, tsundere boxer being a boring asshole, and a few other characters being pretty basic. Which is fine, since I still enjoyed seeing them

Game's good. It suffers kinda the same story issues like IV Apocalypse but I like it for what it is and the ost slaps. Also liked the anime adaptation but I get why it is so hated

@@petrock4041 yea, I'm even more surprised it got a Spanish dub last year for a new tv anime channel premiere. Not the best quality but I never expected to watch anything megaten being aired here en Mexico and dubbed by latin VAs lol

I thought DeSu2 was the opposite of SMT4A actually, since instead of trying to build on DeSu it provided it's own different story, while keeping the main gimmicks of future telling and limited time. (which admittedly, DeSu1 still did better, and I actually thought even the anime handled death videos better than the game) They share in common more comic relief and friendship than the original games, which IS subjective, but in DeSu2 I think they only pulled the "friendship is magic" card once in the main plot (and I imagine in the Neutral ending which I've yet to replay for, but that happens in SMTIV too, and is just a Neutral problem in most SMT), and they actually had the alignments represented by more than 1 character as a result, which was a fresh take and I liked it. SMTIVA had problems because it was already a flawed story in a vacuum, with shoddily explained aligments and lore, on top of trying to continue SMTIV's plot. (I still liked it for Divine Powers tho)

Record Breaker is the 3DS re-release. The original DS game did not have voice acting, same deal as Overclocked and DS1.

I played this after DS1 And I'll tell you, this were a great upgrade, if you say the contrary, think of this, the atmosphere is way heavier here, the characters have way more development, and the villains are not nonsensical on any route exept one, better than the Chaos and Escape routes of DS1 Plus, its a plus that they finnally leave god the f--k alone and put something way more heavy and beautiful Plus, the ost slaps harder, and "will of the species" and the DS2 Battle Theme kick the f-+k out of "Garuda" and the DS1 Battle theme and you will not make me change my mind... Even tho, _Last Desition is good_

Said fights often involve getting beaten and coming back with a better plan. Also, there's a white haired supernatural guy who digs the main character and has a lot in common with monsters." I'm not even sure if I'd call the game inspired, I don't know much anime but I reckon that general structure is just anime/cartoon trope at this point. Also, it's irrelevant because both are character driven, and there's *one* character I'd say is similiar between them in both role and character. Said white haired character in NGE has like an episode of screentime and could've been easily removed anyway, because for a casual watcher the plot is symbolical nonsense. (Edit: hot take (?) but the DeSu2 anime, while worse than the game, is still better than NGE (even if that one is more, em, unique), and that's saying something since like most game adaptations it's rushed. That's fine, because NGE was clearly rushed and lacked budget too) (Edit 2: I mean, to clarify for anyone else in the future, I DO think that DeSu2 anime is not only worse than the game, but also generally bad, and partly because it leans too much on Eva's inspiration. I just really don't like Eva, and appreciate that DeSu2A at least has a coherent story, unless playing the game first made me know too many details)

@@dutczar5436 Evangelion essentially invented all of modern anime's tropes. It completely changed the anime industry (for better or for worse). So I wouldn't be surprised if it was a little inspired from it. Eva is my favorite anime, so I'll be the judge of whether this hold up to it.

@@mrbanks456 I actually misread the comment and thought you played DeSu 2 and didn't watch Eva, but yeah, all I say still stands, even if it spoils a bit. The lore is way more straightforward, which is good for me because it didn't feel like it dropped too many plot points. EDIT: Also, I said I liked the DeSu2 anime more than Eva, but you should definitely play the game instead, the anime is still definitely a very flawed adaptation, and very different in tone too.

Game has a great cosmic horror story and an immensely deep gameplay system. If you can put up with the cringe-worthy female character designs, it can consume a lot of hours of your time.
