In today's video, we delve into why the Nordic nations-Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Denmark, and the Faroe Islands-strike fear and resentment in the hearts of authoritarian regimes around the globe. Despite their small size and population, these countries represent a significant challenge to dictatorships due to their commitment to democracy, freedom, and high living standards.
What we'll have a look at:
The defining characteristics of the Nordic Model that contribute to unparalleled social mobility and happiness.
How educational systems in these countries empower individuals from all backgrounds to thrive.
The core values of equality and freedom that underpin Nordic societies and threaten authoritarian narratives.
Real-world examples of how leaders like Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping perceive the Nordics as a threat.
Insight into the Nordic countries' influence on the global stage through their human rights advocacy and foreign aid initiatives.
Join us as we explore the factors that make the Nordic countries a beacon of hope and a persistent irritant to authoritarian leaders worldwide.

I am Nordic, and to me, authoritarian regimes are the strangest thing in this world. Imagine having to kowtow to a single person who, in theory, could have an IQ below 80, simply because they happened to be related to the previous authoritarian leader. Take, for example, the Iranian president who flew a 40-year-old helicopter, crashed, and died. Then you have citizens standing in a square, pretending to mourn.

I makes me genuinely sad that the process of building up a similar model of high trust and friendship by long, hard work of people living in west Russia seem to get ruined ower and ower whan it is almost there. Before the war i could go skiing in the mountains in Sweden with russian frinds, there was even the beginning of a new era of russian industries exporting high quailty items to west Europe and reconstructing the society model for equal right to workers, quite similar to the Swedish model, but now the embargo is back again which means the factories probably had to close, war propaganda leaders try to build up hate and tensions among people again, the economy is ruined for people on both sides, people must leave Russia, etc, etc. It is all just so sad. 😞

As a Swede I have tried to explain jantelagen to Americans. It did not go well. They took it too seriously and believed they were actual laws, which they aren't. But the message of the video is basically that the dictator's hate the Nordic countries because we are seekers of truth. Something that we're taught from a young age is being critical of sources and always check twice(preferably from several different sources). There's no greater threat to a dictator than the truth

If it was lack of religion then the united kingdom, and germany would also be rather amazing places to live. We (the Nordic countries) aren't by any means perfect, as we face a lot of serious problems such as failed integration from massive immigration leading to widespread violence and corruption, political naivety where an unfounded belief in capitalism has lead to the state selling out infrastructural resources to private interests where profit goals have lead to deteriorated services and societal functionality; etc -- but still, the Nordic countries are the best countries in the world to live in if you value freedom, justice, tolerance and equality. I wish we would co-operate and integrate further to make us stronger together, and by we I mean not only the five Nordic countries (plus Färöarna and Åland) but also the three Baltic countries, with whom we share not only current values but also a lot of history and culture. The US faces similar issues where people fleeing from other countries might be more likely to wind up in areas where poverty is a huge issue. I salute all free thinking people in the authoritarian countries that want to take power back to the people and eliminate lifelong and generation spanning governing. The dictators are a product of the inherent human desire for power and the longer the period, the harder to give it up. To be fair, I don't think it's that easy to copy the Nordic countrie's success. It's based on very old cultural norms and historical developement based on the social and living conditions up here. Very few people in large territories, where people were very dependant on each other to survive. People in general have also owned their own farming land, making them very independent. So central government has always been pretty weak compared to many other counties. But there are also other cultural components, that aren't that eaasy to explain. Because I guess some of my descriptions probably fit other countries - like perhaps Afghanistan? But why were women already in viking times very much more equal to men in the Nordic countries? I'd say the developement is probably something like 1'500 years! In the end, the only way the emerging central government could stay in some sort of power, was to also serve the common good. Central government HAD to be benevolent. Else it faced beeing thrown out by peasant armies. (So we never had a feudal system, like the rest of Europe.) (I'm Swedish - and also feel very Nordic.)

Why are people so fixated on jantelagen... or "jante's law" as you called it in the vid. It's not like it's a legislation, nor is it taught in schools. It's simply a cultural norm, and yet again not related to any sort of "you must not do this!"-type of rhetoric. It's more like we can be relaxed in everyday life, which then gets reflected in how we dislike it when people disrupt that which makes us calm. We're also taught something very simple: politeness to each other. It's nowhere near as strict, but it's something that can be compared to Japanese cultural norms, and the social hierarchy isn't as much of a thing, hence how you get what people call jantelagen (which you called "Jante's Law").

Well if anything that Hungary should be yet on this dictator list and how they affect to current EU and NATO. Even more into this that Finland current government on my opinion tries to limit more the freedom than anything else. Even to this economy the ideal economy that can be achieved is harder and harder because of massive dept. Norway government is only one free of that but even they just making savings on everything. Even the freedom of speech sure is there and probably not gonna go away. Well I sure hope that is the case but most of countries that is changing to worse.

yes pleace cover the other side of the Nordic countries were the government often forget there own people that yes we are a very happy people, but we also have the highest depressions rate, that the velfare given to the poor to leve do not cover the high prizes everything cost here like food, housing, power, for normal people, that the benefits are WAY below on cost, so they get the poor to built up debt and have no way out of there debt ever, and get them stuck and not be able to leve life propper as they say we do, but in our Happy ways that we get free things like hospitals, doctores, police, fire Departments, schools, daycares, pay our young to take a degree, also have a down side were the sick, then poor are the one accutly paying for it all and not just mony vice but also with there happyness, freedom of what they have left of there lives, and the working class are also paying for it, That it is not the upper class they sits and pay almost no taxes, but the working classes and the poor and sick are the one paying for the countries "wealth" with little almost non in eithere benifit or work pay income to get by or get housing or food at prizes to they can erfort, bc housing, powerbills, food, cars, insuring's, medicin, are way to high for sick or poor or working classes to pay, but all pay almost 48 % in taxes nomatter the income, exsept the upper classes. that is haw they work, know i am on bennift have seen depression not just amonge sick, old but also working classes do to the kapatilistikes ways the govements take from them but it is the upper classes that bennefit from it all, so janteloven dont work anymore unfortenly, it looks like it to the one on the outside, but not when you leve here, that is the backside of the countries. so maby they should look out for there own also and raise the benifits income and the working classes salarys up but not the cost of items, food, housings, powerbills, medicin, cars, insuring´s so all could be with acording to janteloven but let the taxes pay be ecuel for all and let it stay at max 48 % to all including the upperclasses should pay that also even the politiciens.

I don't know if you're from Norway or what, but the "rich" in Norway are paying around 100% tax. A lot of Norwegian business people have had to flee the country because their taxes have added up to literally more money than they make in a year after everything from the corporate tax, to the income tax, to the property taxes to the wealth tax, and so on, adds up. So I would actually argue that taxes should be slashed across the board from poor to wealthy in all the Nordics. All these countries make plenty of money through other sources, such as Norway's fish, oil and their wealth fund for example. I don't think these countries can afford to ship such insane portions of all their income straight out of the country to other countries with any sort of needs. That just isn't sustainable, nor fair to us tax payers! But apart from that, I totally agree with everything you wrote there! The Nordics, and especially Scandinavia, are being very romanticized across the world, and I just don't think that's fair or accurate to the reality we live in. Especially not at the moment!
@Skaevs
@Skaevs Ай бұрын
This isn't true. No matter how true this feels to you, your view is clearly biased from your own experience. If you're poor you don't and never will pay 48% in taxes, you will most likely pay around 35%, the rich pay up to 50%. The wealthy are the ones that finance the government mostly, not the poor or the sick. Maybe there are some problems you have accurately pointed out, but most of it isn't true.

Your part about free education is not correct for Norway. Higher education such as university and college is not free and Norwegian students acrue high student debt. However, the student loans are not used primarily to pay down tuition fees but for monthly housing rent.
@MilitaryRated

So you just describe exactly what I said. Higher education is free, but people take up student loans to pay to live in big cities. The point still stands. The state doesn't pay a salary for people to study, they need to pay for living themselves, like in all Nordic countries.
