you still glossed over alot the relevant legal aspects of this. 1. it's still a breach from the city if they didn't fund adequate power to supply water to the hydrants on a hill. putting hydrants there without adequate water or power is like fraud. they had a legal obligation to make those work properly in the times of need. 2. you mentioned like 5 fires started randomly and cited wind. but 5 fires don't all start randomly at the same time period on accident, there is likely a coordinated effort of arsonists, who did it on purpose to help distract and overburden the fire department(which had it's funding cut, while tribal program funding was boosted and dei and other 14th amendment infringements).

Thank you. I was a Firefighter for over 12 years. I have been trying to spread this information myself. They also seem to forget that much of their system is gravity fed, and with so many destroyed buildings draining the system and further reducing pressure. When pumps get overtaxed, they can fail catastrophically, further exacerbating the problem. Lastly, given the conditions, no amount of water could have stopped this.
@stringlarson12478 минут бұрын
Those pesky impellers just don't like to run dry. I'm not sure of the types of trucks on hand, but here in Chicago, we have many trucks with pumps on board to handle the massive number of mid- to very large-rise buildings; however, if the source runs down, it's a moot point. Due to earthquake issues, much of the West Coast is covered with low-rise structures.

Every house that burned down has copper water pipes with solder fittings that melt, becoming essentially a water main break. With a meter size of 3/4" (80 psi = 30 GPM) up to 2" (80 psi = 130 GPM) for residential properties, times thousands of house that burned down, (80 GPM average time 1000 = 80,000 GPM) is probably the reason the fire hydrants were dry. It happened in Montecito, where I work. We had to go out in the fire here in Montecito and shut off water meters to conserve water. Just an FYI.

Very good explanation of the engineering. The California fires example however shows how engineering realities must be ensconced within broader framework of management. Nature has its peculiarities that we must work around. Engineering is the mechanism, but competency and proactive management are what make sure that engineering is allowed to work as designed.

Yes. Plus, it shows they need more supplylines and full reservoir. Similar to electricity in a house. Normally each room has 1 supplyline to feed the lights & outlets. But in the kitchen there are usually 2 or 3. Because kitchen contains oven, refrigerator, lights and outlet. That area of California is basically a desert, high winds, expensive homes, homes stacked feet apart, etc. So they need to up the capacity based on the circumstances.

Great explanation of what happened to our water system. I'm retired LAFD, this fire was the perfect storm. All bets are off in a wind driven fire of that magnitude. You get out of the way or you kill firefighters. You pick up the pieces after the fire blows over. We've been concerned about an event of this magnitude occurring for many decades. The 1961 Bell Air fire had similar issues including dry hydrants. Dry hydrants will almost always happen at large scale fires like this. I've also encountered them in other cities while on a strike team. So this is not unique in California. "Design for Disaster", a video here on You Tube explains how that particular fire gained so much traction overwhelming the resources quickly. The circumstances nearly mirrors the Pacific Palisades fire, less the 100mph gusts, the population explosion since 1961, and the banning of wood roof shingles. This incident has been in the making for decades, and the Santa Monica mountain fire district always burn. I was at the skirball fire in 2019. Fire Storm 1993, Fire storm 1996, Fire Storm 2003, and Fire Storm 2005. Why developers are still allowed to build in the mountain fire district is insane. Another community of 200 homes are now being built in the Newhall Santa Clarita area, where a wind driven fire in one of the recent incidents swept through that mountain range blackening it. Now they want to put houses in more indefensible space when and if another Wind driven fire occurs. And the lack of staffing of local fire departments during this population and development boom is not helping. LA City and LA County fire especially are criminally underfunded and under staffed. This has been going on for decades through numerous elected administrations. Republican LA Mayor Richard Riordan Cut the LAFD to the bone to save money in the 1990's. While promoting runaway development. It took us nearly ten years to partially recover from that. And then the 2008 crash happened. You got yourself another subscriber.

I learned about the need for controlled burning in elementary school in the early '90s. I did not realize that this had been stopped because it's crazy. Controlled burning is really just rescheduling the natural small forest fires that are stopped by humans to a more convenient time. Stopping all forest fires is just stacking tender for a bonfire. People have been warning that there was not enough water in South Cal for years. They had put together a bill to refill and expand the reservoirs but built none of the new reservoirs after years. The fire departments were under staffed and doing DEI practices. It kind of seems like this was a inevitability, not a black swan

Most people are going to be quick to point the finger because of funding reductions. They didn’t say anything about the 60 million that had been approved for budget salaries. What you don’t see is letters or memos from leaders trying to create solutions to problems. The reservoir under repair, what was the backup plan? I find it interesting that considering the terrain with the many hills and valleys more hilltop water storage tanks are not utilized to aid in keeping the system pressurized so you do not have to rely solely on pumps during an emergency situation. I have been in the fire service here in midwest for 45 years and run a small department in a small town with a single water tower that stores 156,000 gallons of water and due to its height pressurizes the towns water system to about 60 psi. There are two well fields that supply this tower and during any fire situation all the pumps are turned on. My primary fire engine can pump 1500 gallons per minute if we have enough lines laid, which means our tower could only sustain us for 100 minutes at the most. Most average size house fires will take less than 10,000 gallons to extinguish typically closer to 4000-6000 gallons. Just some things to consider.

In Australia, controlled burns (or "backburning") have long been a part of Indigenous fire management practices. Aboriginal Australians have used fire as a tool for thousands of years to manage the landscape. These controlled burns help reduce fuel loads, prevent larger, uncontrollable bushfires, and promote the growth of certain plants. The technique has been refined and passed down through generations, allowing for more sustainable land management. The idea behind controlled burns is to burn small, manageable sections of land under specific conditions, rather than allowing dry vegetation to accumulate, which can fuel dangerous wildfires. In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the value of traditional Indigenous fire practices in mitigating bushfire risks in Australia. This approach contrasts with the situation in places like Los Angeles, where wildfires are often exacerbated by urban sprawl, overgrown brush, and changing climate conditions. While controlled burns are also used in parts of California to prevent larger wildfires, they are sometimes met with controversy due to the complexities of urban development, air quality concerns, and logistics. The scale of wildfires in LA, especially during extreme dry periods, tends to create more destructive blazes that can be harder to control, making the management of fire risk a bit different than in rural or less densely populated areas like those in Australia. The connection between these two locations shows how the practice of fire management, whether through traditional or modern methods, needs to evolve based on local conditions.

They need to start basically installing city wide water sprinklers, but on a more industrial scale, that can be turned on and shower a given area when a large residential wild fire breaks out. Saturate everything and that will put a stop to a lot of small spot fires and other issues. That would take an insane amount of water, but CA could make storage for this if they wanted to. If you are anti-reservoirs then you can start making artificial aquafers, refilling natural one and drawing from them, build a pipe line from the north for water or a million other things. Not only is that a good stop measure for future droughts, it will put a lot of people to work! What am I thinking, we should build a $100B high-speed train from Fresno to Bakersfield.

Given the desperation of the situation, surely they could conect the empty LA water supply to the Pacific ocean so the hydrants are full of salt water. Then hand out bottled water to the people who dont already drink it.

In the case of the Palisades they didnt refill the 117 million gallon reservoir and relied on smaller 1 million gallon tanks that eventually went dry.

Maybe ensuring the fire hydrants worked should have been higher on the officials priority list. Glad the LA Fire Chief gets paid $400k a year to pay attention to anything but fire fighting.

Think about it this way: Someone in the government decided that the area needed a 117 million reservoir. Then, someone else in government said, "well, not so much." Since the facts have proved that the first person was correct, hopefully they will fire or even jail the person who said "not so much".

There’s a desperate need to convert water from the nearby Pacific Ocean in a manner that can be fed to the hydrants. Perhaps creating separate reservoirs after desalination. And adding new pumps in a daisy-chain fashion to keep the pressure going when needed. Obviously this means a need for more budget. The fires are going to reoccur unfortunately. Private home owners, businesses, insurance companies and the government must work together to create a special budget to minimize property, life and ecological damage.

OK going out on a crazy limb here. Why not fix reservoirs during the wet season? Why not have backups? Fires have been happening as long as I can remember.

For an area prone to dry weather and high chances of forest forest fires, would it be fair to say that to add more towers or tanks connected to fire hydrants would be better. The water towers would be built to handle so many thousands of homes at a time, basically back ups for just incases. Also clearing dry elements away from communities that are not far from thick forest areas would help too.

Your animations are amazing. But here is a hint: try using difuse shadows in your renderings. It will add to immersiveness. And it should be just a simple shadow setting, so just render your videos twice: once with your normal settings and once with difuse shadows. See how they turn up

Because the reservoirs were voted to be filled and vetoed causing there to be no water pressure, causing there to be no water in the fire hydrants the cutting of $17.4 million the cancellation of multiple insurance companies for fire protection they knew this was gonna happen, but the most important thing, the topographical map, showing three fires lit at the same moment miles apart, indicating this is a terrorist attack, regardless of the individual who look like he was a Middle Eastern man Caught starting fires and seen that another fire location earlier you’re gonna find this is a terrorist attack. I’m just wondering if the government will actually tell you who that man was or will they hide it just like to point out the facts and the truth ❤DALE.

@ Did you notice on the topographical map those three fires started at the same time miles apart did you see the guy they arrested with the yellow blow torch? He sure looked like he was a Middle Eastern fella not the Middle Eastern fella but the location of the three fires at the same moment indicates this was on purpose and a terrorist attack simple logic. Really I hope you look into it there’s even bigger things happening people aren’t aware of.

@@Aitelly No his review was not well written and is conspiratorial nonsense. Note California water reservoirs are mostly full. Some issues like with the distribution system and timing of the Palisade reservoir being under repair made the problem worse. Note the $17 million only cut in the LA FD budget is only 2% of that budget. Fires were not occurring only in LA. - As to the guy caught, nowhere is it stated he is middle eastern, and folks of Mexican heritage look middle eastern. "After interviewing the suspect, investigators determined there was not enough probable cause to charge the man with arson or suspicion of arson, and he was instead arrested on a felony probation violation, assistant Los Angeles Police chief Dominic Choi".

Municipal water systems are not built to fight this kind of fire. You have to fight it from above and despite the reservoir being out of commission there was enough water in the system.

What was the contingency plan for fire protection that accompanied the long closure (11 months and counting) of the 117,000,000 gallon Santa Ynez Reservoir? Were other reservoirs in the system storing greater than usual amounts of water?

I've never known a water supply to be at a lower grade than the infrastructure it supplies. Hence, as long as the supply is there, the amount of water and pressure shouldn't be an issue

Building houses out of wood is madness in such a region. The city must be divided by borders through which fire cannot penetrate. For example, separated by very wide roads, because all the houses are built very close to each other, the fire quickly spreads to other houses.
