Very true...the past is rarely more humane than the present. But sometimes it was. For example, less environmental pollution, better sense of fashion, or even more positive reinforcing moral values. It always depends on context and case by case situations. The worst systems like the harem system did not stand the test of time.

it must have been hard to be a "nice" boss if the only thing you've ever known is completely servitude shown to you and everyone you know considers it the norm. perhaps some form of compassion and humility might have been learned as a young child from a mother who believed in such things...before they grew older and became a member of the palace... i'd like to think i'd be a nicer boss, but i realize i'm a product of my environment 😞

from other videos it sounds like being a concubine was a vicious power struggle with life/death/torture being at stake...so they were fawned upon by eunuchs whose lives sucked...but they also seem to have lives that sucked. is it possible that a society could evolve into something where every level was its own hell? is there a way to have one that stresses...lower stress? if one extreme is possible surely others are too.. current nordic countries with commonly accepted concepts of universal human rights, and a strong middle class and good social support programs from taxes seem to be in contrast to this... nothing is perfect but we can try to make most people moderately happy and less stressed in ilfe..
