Why Did God Take On Our Humanity?

Every Christmas we celebrate the fact that Jesus took on our humanity and became one of us. But have we ever asked the question why? Why the Incarnation?
You’re definitely not the first to ask this question, and it’s a valid question. Why would God, an all infinite, perfect, and perfectly whole being come to earth to live as a human, and even die a horrible death on the cross? There is nothing he lacks, nothing he doesn’t know, and nothing he needs from us. So, why did he become man? Fr. Mike aims to answer this question today.

Fr.Mike I've been praying and working hard to put all of my sins to bed and my anger at God's feet. I've watched tarot card readings and I've gotten rid of it fully today. Since God is all powerful, He is able to give whatever He thinks is best for us. The very purpose of great love for us that He sacrificed His only begotten son. Come to think of it that He didn't let Abraham sacrificed Isaac and yet He gave up Jesus His only son for our salvation..

Saint Augustine wrote, “God created us without us: but he did not will to save us without us.” I believe the life of Christ told us as much about human nature as it did about God, if not more. Hi father mike. I’m a new Christian who’s trying to decide what church I want to join. I’m feeling very called to Catholicism, but I just cannot get behind the churches teaching on birth control. My husband and I cannot afford 5+ children, and I’m high risk for post partum depression. I was hospitalized for it after I had my daughter. It was the most horrific experience I have ever had, the hormones hit me so hard. I understand the church teaches natural family planning, but even that is not very effective at preventing pregnancy. This is honestly the one singular issue that is holding me back. I would LOVE a video on this if you feel called to do so, thank you so much and God bless.

What a comforting talk! I have children who have not only left the church, but whose lifestyles would be appalling to my own family. We tell them nothing. We have to help them financially, so we are always in the picture. We love them very much. I don’t criticize their lifestyles - they were brought up Catholic and know exactly what we believe and how we live our lives. It is pointless to say anything, so I pray for them with all my heart. What made me feel so wonderful is that we are the only ones in their lives that make them feel that they are cared about; that they matter to us. I didn’t realize how important that was, but I have been doing it for years. God wants us to know we matter to him - wherever we are in our lives. So I think we have been doing the right thing. He created your soul. Our souls seem to be actually ancient as in God's Plan, it was already complete at the beginning. So when our sous were created, He created us and so yes. In a very real sense, He is our Father. Yes, we are allowed to become His Children though because that is a choice. I suppose, imagine this. A parent has a child, of their own flesh and blood, and the child falls away from and begins to hate and do their own thing. In the Divine, without any type of recourse and action to clean the offenses away, there is not really a way to become children of God again. Of course there is bc God is not of impossible things, but rather, able to make the impossible possible and yet, He chose in His infinite loving wisdom, the best even when we come to the damning question "why" when if we merely accept His Will as is... I digress. He is our father. He created our souls. However, we had to allow ourselves to become His children. We can do something by nature and we can do something by choice. A parent may remarry, but it is up to the child to accept that new parent as their own. But yes. God did create your soul and yes, in the Plan of God, He guided your parents together and in doing so, yes, God is in control of everything. Your entire natural being is as God wants it to be for the here and now. This could actually really open up to the topic of whether or not we truly have a good grip on the understanding of what it means to be a Child of God, a being with a soul of the Divine who gets stained and maimed with sin, but through Christ who is Mercy and through the love of God, we can truly get back up and continue our climb when we wash ourselves with His sacrifice.

Beautiful. It's incorrect to call God a human BEING though. Jesus is a Divine BEING, the 2nd Person of the Blessed Trinity. He has two natures - human and divine. He is true God and true man. But He is not two beings. That is a heresy known as nestorianism. How do I let Fr Mike know? He needs to correct this!

I've prayed for over twenty yrs. Read the Bible on and off for over 20 yrs. I can honestly say I've never once felt God. I've never had an inclination that Jesus exists. I bet father Mike has his doubts also. Why is he hiding? What would be the purpose to him not revealing himself? I understand the faith thing, but there's many in this world that need him. Idk, I'm having doubts that Heaven exists. Even though I've read hundreds of nde stories, I need one myself.

I realize this will probably bother some people watching this channel, but I don't see why Jesus's death was a sacrifice or why it was necessary. For something to be a sacrifice, something must be lost or given up. What did God sacrifice with Jesus? Jesus returned to heaven more powerful than ever before, so I fail to see how the entire event was actually a sacrifice.

@@junomcgaff3479 Like I said, for something to be a sacrifice, something must be lost or given up. So what did God lose? Can't be Jesus because while he might have died, he resurrected 72 hours later, so do big deal. Can't be the pain of the crucifixion because Jesus was an omnipotent God that probably doesn't even register levels of human pain, so it wasn't a big deal. Can't be the humiliation because Jesus is probably the most respected person in history now.

You are wrong. Jesus is fully man and fully God. That means he did experience all the pain coming with the crucifixion. All the emotions, abandonment etc.. Yes, sacrifice means giving up something. What did Jesus give up? His high position in the Heavenly Kingdom, His protection coming from his Father. God of the universe became poor small fragile human being like the rest of us. He followed the will of his Father till the end, and after that God seated Him the most high again.

So to simply put it God didn't snap his fingers to allow us to heaven, because the value of what he wanted to do for us needed an equal payment, being outside our ability. So he had to physically embody our image so that he could make that payment for our souls to the holy spirit; to be able to in our own choices and actions here, so that we could be capable of reaching him and heaven in physical death? And that to sacrifice to the spirit is an entirely different concept of sacrifice? Or am I missing something?

Was the incarnation necessary? I understand that this is the way it happened, but is it the only way it could have happened? Like, couldn't God reconcile us to himself just because He chose to? Couldn't God forgive sin without becoming incarnate? I hope my question makes sense.

The question makes sense. You'd think God in jis omnipotence wasn't constrained to accomplish his purpose in this particular manner. But his purpose is not just reconciliation, but divinization, and the incarnate Christ in heaven is the beginning of that. And even reconciliation is an ongoing process where we fall over and over, so something like the Sacrament of Reconciliation making forgiveness available to everyone is necessary. And God wants to be with us now whenever we are, so something like the Eucharist is necessary. You can't say "this is my body" if you don't have one?

I love the Lord. Blessings to all people reading this. I am enjoying and following the podcast, bible in a year. However, i have a question, if anyone has the answer, i would so appreciate it. If all this is true...why God became man, why then, would Jesus say "My God, my God, why has thou forsaken me?" If this was the 'plan' all along....why, would he cry this out? I am a believer, not someone trying to find fault in God's word. In many of my bibles these words of Jesus are in red, in HIS language and the 'forsaken' question is in black ink. This has been a burning question in my heart for decades. I know when i doubt anything in God's word, it has been my missunderstanding of scriture.

I've read that Jesus said this as He felt His Life going away from His Body and was momentarily and Humanly afraid. This thought is not Biblical only a possible explanation as to understand why He said it.

As I read um a book written by a jewish historian Martin Gilbert :" while he was on the Cross, Jesus, a pious jew, called out in his agony words which many jews recite in times of grave personal danger, words from Psalm 22" My God, my God, why hast thow forsaken me?" And a few moments before he died, the words from psalm 31: "into thine hand I commit my spirit"

He took our punishment which is banishment from God. While on the cross his connection to the Father was severed because he became our sin. Thank you Jesus.

I used to have that same question. Read Psalm 22 and you'll understand - it will actually blow your mind, how it so blatantly references the crucifixion. He was using scripture.

I'm also one of the people on the Bible in a Year journey with you. as they say, the New testament is hidden in the Old Testament, and the Old Testament is revealed in the New Testament. this is the amazing thing about the Bible and God's plan for our salvation. everything in the OT and NT is connected. when Jesus said those words, He was quoting the Psalms, in particular Psalm 22 which the Jews in those times would have been very familiar with. And all those who heard Him on the cross would have known immediately what He meant. Psalm 22 is sorrowful but it also ends triumphantly. it FORETOLD Jesus's suffering and triumph. here's something from the Catechism: "128 The Church, as early as apostolic times, 104 and then constantly in her Tradition, has illuminated the unity of the divine plan in the two Testaments through typology, which discerns in God's works of the Old Covenant prefigurations of what he accomplished in the fullness of time in the person of his incarnate Son. "129 Christians therefore read the Old Testament in the light of Christ crucified and risen. Such typological reading discloses the inexhaustible content of the Old Testament; but it must not make us forget that the Old Testament retains its own intrinsic value as Revelation reaffirmed by our Lord himself. 105 Besides, the New Testament has to be read in the light of the Old. Early Christian catechesis made constant use of the Old Testament. 106 As an old saying put it, the New Testament lies hidden in the Old and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New.107"
