Why Did He Break Up With Her After She Met His Family?

Michelle and her boyfriend were only together for a month before he broke up with her. He ended things shortly after she met his family without an explanation...until now!

She doesn't sound like an old-fashioned, big-family type of person (nothing wrong with that), he was raised in one like that which he cannot undo. They just aren't meant for each other. But looking at her phone during a prayer is super rude. Who does that?

Yeah that would be really awkward unfortunately at least two of these things can look very different at different households. In some homes the kids eat first and some Holmes the guests eat first and in other homes they don't care . A lot of families also would find it rude to ask questions about family especially if they are particularly private

This girl sounds exactly like my ex. Self absorbed. Only talked about themselves. Never really asked about my family. So glad we broke up. I am dating someone who is 10x better. Also, you never go ahead of the elderly or those who are older than you unless they insist that you get the food first!

She probably should have paid more attention but in my opinion the boyfriend should have kind of stood by and guided her because some families the guests eat first of the families kids eat first and some families do not care. This is one of the things that was on his list that is very different for every family

It has to be a culture clash. In the Hispanic community family is essential part of who you are. I’ve dated men (of a different culture) who fail to understand the dynamic of my family structure of respect. When it comes to meeting the family it’s about earning the respect & getting to know them. In my relationships I made it a mission to get close with partner’s mothers and sisters because that’s what I expected of me. If I’m serious about the relationship it’s important to establish myself as a the kind hearted person who loves to spoil my partner & his family. However this can only be done after months of dating like 6-10mo. It’s difficult to put that amount of energy to someone if there’s no true foundation. In this case; it was too soon and too much for an unstable relationship to work out. He set himself up for failure because he failed to know the women he was bring home to his family and friends. I know y’all didn’t talk about the possibility of culture clash but it’s a considerable variable in this case. Different cultures hold different values when it comes to family.

I was about to excuse her for her not asking questions because maybe she is nervous or something. People freeze up. But the jumping in line in front of grand parents? When I met my husbands family I kinda took a backseat approach and waited a bit. Its not important for all people, but some do obvs.

I was raised with very little to no etiquette so I learned a lot of things a hard way when I was in my teen years. But definitely paying attention and Follow your boyfriend's lead would have been the best. I am really not sure to say about scrolling on your phone during prayer that is an obvious impolite thing to do the least you could do is excuse yourself to go to the bathroom and do it then. That being said I don't think she is selfish or selfish or self centered I just don't think she was paying attention and was super nervous. It's hard to ask questions about other people because people get offended so easily. What questions do family members expect a new girlfriend or a boyfriend to ask them?

Well, I think Tommy was right. She is a horrible person 🤣 she made it obvious she didn't want to be there in many ways. I doubt she was nervous or cares at all, and he didn't know her well enough and brought someone who embarrassed him. It's good they told him, I'm sure she remembers doing all those things but thought she was entitled to do whatever like get food first for whatever weird reason, like so she could bail sooner.

Ok, agree with some of it, but I do have question….I am an introvert and have been painfully shy and I wouldn’t necessarily ask questions about anyone bc I am guest and to me, asking questions about their family is rude to me…I wouldn’t even talk about myself unless directly asked… So, my query is this…Is it rude asking questions of their family?!? I think some ppl would consider asking as rude behaviour, so what is etiquette?!?

Yeah I was raised with little to no etiquette but I do know the every family can be very different as far as asking questions about the family and who goes to eat first. Some families against the first other families the kids eat first of the families the cooks eat first. In my opinion the boyfriend failed because he could have guided her a little bit and given her a heads up about some of these things are different for every family

Exactly. I'm good at sitting back melting into the background but the worst experience I had was when my man left me floundering with his family at a gathering for a funeral. I am usually pretty good at being respectful ang having good etiquette things but in his family those things alongside me not being white was all it took for his extended family to not care for me lol. Luckily his immediate family loved me n he didn't take much stock into what those family members have said. I did let it be known that i wouldn't be going back I didn't care who died.

I think she is better off without him. Sure, she made some errors with the family, but it seems like he abandoned her during the party. She was essentially his date. How do they know she was on her phone during the prayer? Obviously, somebody had their eyes open. Did I hear correctly? He didn’t tell her these things, because he didn’t want her to feel bad…I think he knew that she would have explanations for some of the things his family pointed out, and that he would look bad for not helping her navigate through the party. He could have told her that he wanted her to stay longer…poor communication on his part.

Mad about cutting in line but you probably didn't tell her about how the functions operate. (most don't) the icing on the cake was the prayer thing that's when I knew this guy wasn't being honest about who he is. I thought company ate first lol. My grandparents wouldn't care about that at all. I mean, I get some of the things.... Like the prayer and only talking about yourself. But if food is served and nobody is getting up...unless she ran and just completely knocked the grandparents out of the way lmao. Playing devils advocate 😉 You escaped that one girl. This man boy is so attached to his families apron you would not handle it... Sounds like a huge family probably up inside everybody's business. Men boys like that never quite cut the apron strings, their partners can find them selves in the shadow of the matriarchy always. How many times here have we seen big troubles when his family come to call. It does seem that you don't come from a big family so didn't understand the big family protocols. Good that you found this out early.

There is never any reason to ghost - like ever. If you don't have the balls after one date to just leave a generic or even specific message, don't date. Be a man or woman and own up.
