So I'm from the West and I don't live by the ocean but I always heard that if the water leaves the beach then you better run and hide to higher levels because then water will come crashing in like a tsunami

Thanks for explaining this. The direction of the wind pulls the water away from the beach.

I have scoured the entire internet for footage of the water rushing back from the reverse surge, and I SURPRISINGLY cannot find a single thing…

This reverse storm surge happened before in 2017 during Irma and it's what saved the Tampa Bay area from a storm surge. The water will only gently refill the area where it had previously been pulled from. Like a high tide it doesn't suddenly come rushing in.

It's called wind setdown and it's the tail end of storm surge. It happens in shallow bodies of water.

I still remember when I lived in Lake Park Florida in the late 80's. I knew a native Floridian woman who at that time was 102. She told me a story that I found astonishing! She said in 1928 a hurricane swept across Florida and pushed all the water in Lake Okeechobee to one side of the lake. As the eye of the hurricane passed over the area the skies cleared and residents in who lived on or near the shore thought the storm was over so they came out of their homes to see the damage. As they did the winds died down and that released the water to flow back like a tidal wave in the direction it had came from and killed thousands.

I believe her story! She didn't have the advantage of cameras, videos, cellphones, etc. This looks astounding!!!

Whoever is there needs to run. This is also what happens before a tsunami. I bet big storm surge coming.

I honestly don’t know why they didn’t just classify it as a CAT 5 when it landed… I mean it was 2.5mph under CAT 5 winds. But I guess they have their reasons
