In Numbers 1:45 it states men over the age of 20 are to go to battle for their country. The only exception in the Bible is in Deuteronomy 20:1-4. This chapter is part of their Torah . So, in the Torah the only excuse not to go to battle is if you are a newlywed. For the first year of marriage a young man is not to work or go to war. It is a wonderful thing to study the word of God, but you still have to go to battle if you go to war. Israel was barbarically attacked do it had no choice but go into battle. They must join according to the Jewish and Christian scriptures.
