Why Did LEGO Nexo Knights Fail? (2016-2018)

In this video I take a look at LEGO Nexo Knights in its entirety and cover all three years of the theme. I look at every single LEGO set, the TV series that spanned across four seasons and 40 episodes, as well as the mobile game Merlock 2.0, which could interact with the toys themselves. To be fair, I think villains like Monstrux that reincarnate in various new forms and just never seem to die are appealing, but what really bugged me was him zapping Jestro evil again for the second year. Jestro goes through so much development at the end of the second season, and then WHOOPS! All gone next episode. It just feels dirty. Makes his eventual redemption in the third year's sets all the more satisfying. I would've loved to see a confrontation in a fifth season between Jestro and essentially his former abuser, given the then YEARS of history that would've built up to it. And the entire appeal/conceit of the tech monsters is they finally dropped the swords and sorcery junk they'd been falling back on for most of the theme, stopped resisting the advance of time, and embraced the futuristic powers that's given the knights their edge, FINALLY giving them an opponent that truly felt evenly matched, if not overpowered. It seems like the perfect way to end the theme.

Watching these Lego videos makes me realize just how much Lego struck gold with Ninjago. I say that because with themes like Chima or Nexo Knights, yeah they’re cool, but there’s so many sets featuring ANIMAL and KNIGHT before people aren’t interested in buying the sets, which is a death sentence for a Lego show. Meanwhile Ninjago basically created a world where anything can exist, which allows for extremely varied sets. While Chima and Nexo Knights cornered themselves with being only about anthropomorphic animals or fighting knights, while with Ninjago it is so varied that it has already had many anthropomorphic animals figures and a kingdom full of knights wouldn’t feel out of place in a show like itself. Just shows how flexible it is compared to nearly every other Lego theme.

Man, those gameplays were a nostalgia blast for me. Same with the set images. I had so much fun with the entirety of this theme!

Thanks for making this in depth video. Nexo Knights is, and always will be my favourite Lego theme because of nostalgia, and i think it needs to be talked about more often! (Oh, and Stone Clay is my favourite Nexo Knights minifigure)

The true ending was in comics they put in Nexo Knights magazine. but those magazines were released in Europe as far as i know. I have that issue and it has a good ending for nexo knights where they defeat that digital virus monstrux.

I think there was a story to the green and black monsters, it was exclusively for the Blue Ocean Comics, which release mainly in Europe

I for one loved this theme! It got me back into LEGO (obviously I was a space and castle 90s / early 2000s kid). I really had high hopes for it, and I would love to see them introducing some of these back into Ninjago like they did with Chima's Lord Ras. Regarding villain sets not selling, not sure why. I always liked the villain sets more. Fair I loved the Fortrex most - BUT right after that, are jestro's castle, magmar's siege engine thingy, and the green villains sets from the last wave).

Before i didnt really care too much about the show. But when i watched it it was actually really good.The sets are amazing with great builds. Im still sad Nexo Knights ended as it was getting pretty intersting towards the end.

I Remeber when I used to love this series, even though it was a bit repetitive which was why it ended, I still wished they finished season 3 because I’m curious on where the story would’ve went, since the sets and armors were sick with new pieces that are really cool.

I agree with nexo knights lacking a villain variety. My main issue was "ok it's that book and Jestro again?". Imagine if they went more creative and made a bigger danger than a book and a clown during season 2? It could be something mind blowing. They already had a variety of villains in their concept art...why didn't they use those. Also season 2 was just "lava monsters but stone" which was a major turn off to me. I remember instantly losing interest because all sets looked like samey grey rocks. Season 1 already had rock-based monsters (those black demons with orange cracks that were just lava that started to turn to stone).

It has some charm to it but not enough to get me really invested as I prefer more traditional castle sets. Some of the minifigures are however great and I could imagen they'd do well in a sort of anniversary CMF in a few years.

I never found the Nexo Knight's show nearly as interesting as either Ninjago or Chima, I think it remained too goofy and childish for too long and didn't get much or any depth until pretty late in the game, it's like if Ninjago started with the 11 minute era, I would not have cared and neither - I think - would a lot of other people. It kind of feeds into the misunderstanding around what kids want, most children don't want to be talked down to, but rather challenged, goofy characters doing goofy things can only hold their interest for so long, but when they can tell there's something more dramatic going on that they don't fully understand, they want to understand it and so give it more focus. I know Pythor was what made me a Ninjago fan (which is why I hate what they did with him from season 4 onwards), he was sinister and cunning and I found him fascinating. And the drama between Creggar and Laval - though it doesn't seem as dramatic now a days - at the time felt epic and intriguing. Complexity gives kids something to latch onto rather than just consuming, and makes the products age better. It's why the Oni Trilogy is a a memorable masterpiece whereas say... Prime Empire is not. And Crystalised is memorable in all the worst ways.
