Why Did Martin Harris Consult with Scholars like Charles Anthon? (Knowhy

Latter-day Saints are familiar with the story recounted in the Pearl of Great Price of Martin Harris visiting with the scholar Charles Anthon. There is, however, much more to this account than what is recorded in this canonized history. Harris is known to have visited at least two other scholars whom he consulted with about the characters taken from the Book of Mormon plates. While some of the details of these visits are not fully known, these three "wise men" together inspired Martin Harris enough to convince him that Joseph Smith was telling the truth.

There's not much wrong with the book of Mormon. It actually teaches that God is one, and that He is from everlasting to everlasting. The D&C and church history is where the problems arise. Jesus is the creator of everything in heaven and on earth. Nobody created him. He is the Son of the Father but not in a humanly way. The Bible teaches that God the Father and Jesus were one in perfect harmony from the beginning. So He couldn't have been created and born like us humans and we can never be like Him. That is a great pride to claim you can be like God, and it's the same mindset that lead to Satan being cast out from God's presence. Beware strange doctrines of men! Especially when they take the name of Christ but lead to another god entirely!

@@evenruderanger7617 , Jesus is the great Jehovah of the Old Testament, and yes He was the firstborn of God the Father , who is the Father of all the spirits who have been born , and who are now living and of those who are yet to be born. The Book of Mormon doesn’t teach that God the Father and Jesus are the same person in one body but that they are in be in purpose. That’s false propaganda or just a misunderstanding of your part,

@@evenruderanger7617 , there is no problem with the D & C at all. I invite you to study both books again and find out for yourself about this particular doctrine. God the Father and Jesus Christ wants us to be perfect as they are one day. It’s in the Bible and the Book of Mormon, look it up

Thanks for helping us learn. I love your support of the Book of Mormon. You're missing a few key facts though in this account. Both Lucy Mack Smith and Oliver Cowdery said that Joseph Smith had been told by Moroni that before he could translate the plates, he had to fulfill the Prophecy in Isaiah. Martin Harris had a spiritual experience telling him that he was to help in the fulfillment of this Prophecy and goes to Joseph to tell him as much. They agree and he takes the characters to the learned men to give them a chance to see if they can read the language, which they cannot. This is all explained in 2 Nephi 27:15. "But behold, it shall come to pass that the Lord God shall say unto him to whom he shall deliver the book [Joseph Smith]: Take these words which are not sealed [the characters from the part of the plates that was not sealed] and deliver them to another [Martin Harris], that he may show them unto the learned, saying: Read this, I pray thee. And the learned shall say: Bring hither the book, and I will read them." You can see the citations for this in "The Man Who Knew" by Rhett James. Martin Harris wasn't going to prove anything to himself, or to get more evidence, and it wasn't his idea. It was a commandment from God to fulfill a specific prophecy in Isaiah. The members didn't "find out" later that this had fulfilled the Prophecy. They knew at the beginning.

@@devonblake731 The internet doesn't have everything online. Here are the references. Oliver Cowder to W.W. Phelps, Messenger and Advocate, I, Feb. 1835, 80: "the Angel Moroni told Joseph Smith that...the scripture [Isaiah 29:11-19] must be fulfilled before it [the Book of Mormon] is translated, which says that the word of a book, which was sealed were presented to the learned, for thus God determined to leave man without excuse...." In The History of Joseph Smith by His Mother Lucy Mack Smith, 1945 Edition page 109, and 114 Lucy says "The First step that he [Joseph] was instructed to take in regard to this work [of translating the plates] was to make a facsimile of some of the characters,.....and send them to some of the most learned men of this generation and ask them for a translation thereof." Note that Joseph was instructed to do it. It was not Martin Harris's idea, or plan. Hope this helps.

The actual Prophecy in Isaiah is really only two verses. 29:11-12. Super brief. It's interesting that only later, after Joseph Translates the small plates of Nephi and gets to 2 Nephi 27, do we [and Joseph, Martin and the church after the fact] get all the real details about the full version of the Prophecy and many more details. We go from having 2 verses to having at least 17 verses (depending how you count). It's my opinion that vs 12-24 are actually the rest of the "text" from the First Vision that Joseph refers to but never wrote down.

Supposedly, when the Anthon script is translated from the American Indian Mic-Mac alphabet that exists today, it is a prayer, or possibly the opening lines of the first plate. Prof. Anthon would denounce them in public, but admit privately that the characters were indeed real. He was asked about the incident so many times, that if my memory serves me, he once remarked privately that it was the "Worst day of my life.".

We need to stop using images of the "Caractors document" that come up so often when referring to the Anthon issue or inscriptions on the plates....it has been verified to not be anything of the sort. It was most certainly not the piece of paper that Harris took to Anthon, and it is almost certainly not a sheet of paper where characters taken directly from the plates were written down...

The book of mormon didn’t take place in central or south America. And has nothing to do with the book of mormon. Read the first 2 paragraphs of the introduction to the book of mormon, 1neph,, 3nephi, ether, mormon, Moroni, and doctrine and covenants. -ALL, let me repeat, ALL, say NOTHING of the book of mormon taking place anywhere other than in NORTH AMERICA/native American Indians and the “promised land”. Not to mention, i believe that joseph smith or martin harris didn’t know anything about the word “reformed Egyptian” until much later in the translation. AND, charles anthon was not a scholar in the Egyptian language-he was however, compiling artifacts and historical documents regarding the native Americans and joseph smith and martin Harris knew the book was written bu the ANCESTORS OF THE NATIVE AMERICANS-and therefore THAT IS THE REASON they took the document to charles Anthon.-make sense??

Not desiring to find fault, or to be rude, the commentary neglected to recite the fact Martin LOST 113 pages of Joseph's translation due to undue plaguing of Joseph for a chance to show his, Martin's, wife. Doing so brought much spiritual hardship to Joseph and left Martin knowing he had not only created the hardship for Joseph, but he, Martin had disappointed the Lord. Financial hardship/sacrifice on Martin's part, might better be seen as a debt he owed to the Lord. Commentaries devoid of true facts and glossy statements about our church history do NOTHING IN RECTIFYING OUR HISTORICAL CREDIBILITY.
