Why Did NRN’s Call for a 70-hour Week Cause an Explosion of Rage?

Long revered as the ‘simple’ middle-class, super-success story, the Murthys of Infosys are perhaps perplexed at why social media seems to explode at their comments these days. This time around, it was NR Narayana Murthy’s ‘request’ that India’s youth must emulate the Japanese and the Germans (who rebuilt their respective nations after the World War), and work for 70 hours a week to build our nation, which caused an uproar. Watch this week’s video as a Sucheta Dalal takes a closer look.

I am already working 12 hours in office (mind you no overtime)+ commute + domestic chores, it's way beyond 17 hours a day. I am working for 2.5 people, had they hired right number, I would save 4 hours a day, have better mental health. I am sure I can't continue this once I have a baby, I am out of this market for good 5 years atleast. I hate what they propagating, unemployment is a pressing issue, these companies don't employ enough people while enjoying all the incentives. These cronies can never get enough.

The worst thing about companies like infosys is, they skew the field of engineering education in the country. They create this illusion about limitless jobs being available. Private education entreprenuers set up countless , low quality engineering college. Parents cram their children into them. The worst thing is, the young people already know that working in IT companies requires only superficial coding skills to survive. So, the entire, rather heavy curriculum of CS bachelors degree becomes some bizarre ritual . all these lakhs of graduates spilling out, hardly employable.

I'm glad you picked this topic for discussion. First the govt extracts max tax from the working class & now the corporates want to extract max work. When there is so much unemployment around, why don't they employ two persons working 40hrs each instead of making one person work 70hrs. No wonder the corporate honchos are getting richer. Or he should have specified its for the govt officials. Cause they are the ones getting massive increases and benefits without even putting in 40 hrs of work...per week 😂😂

2 corrections / disagreements : 1 ) Proving cheap labourforce to US is not IT revolution. 2) Gov. Jobs are attractive because even a Grade 4 employee is getting more salay than an Engineer in private sector and not beacause under table income. 3) Internal Corruption is also common in private sector if not more than government.

Mr. Murthy just wants us to work double and eat dividends. Quite shameful when they don’t pay enough to their employees. Your view on the gig workers was really good. Indian corporates already exploit their employees so much. I worked more than 60 hours a week when it wasn’t needed just coz our manager was bad their job. I am much happier working 40-50 having time for exercise, cooking food at home, spend time doing hobbies. All of these are important for well being.

Privileged people like Narayan Murthy, Etc are far away from Ground Reality. His wife and he are nothing like the "simple" people they are portrayed to be. The middle-class, honest tax paying citizen of India have been laboring for decades working much more than 70 hours a week. A simple example is the security guard of a CHS in the city. Has to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and the day he takes a leave, his pay is deducted. There is a massive divide between the rich and middle class when Top 1% of the country has more wealth than the bottom 50%.

Its always the middle class and the poor who suffer while the rich corporate personnel, industrialist, political leaders, all corrupt Govt employees who get rich the cost of the former. People like NR Murthy etc talk abt 70 hrs work culture without realizing that employees have personal life , family responsibilities, long commuting hrs, no domestic aides etc. Employees being humans need sleep, rest and food at decent times on daily basis. Besides nobody body is getting paid for these extra hrs of slavery. While he & other CEO, CFOs, Directors, Chairmen, all the higher level personnel earn in crores , the normal level employees earn peanuts. How about the likes of his kind parting with 30% of their remunerations to the employees for the extra hrs that he is proposing they work....

A very well thought out opinion madam. You touched upon the huge migration to southern states. I am from Karnataka and I see migrants from northern states every where. The business men and builders here also from north, and they bring in workers from the north. They exploit them with cheap wages. They wre preferred over locals with better skills. Even in IT companies this is the trend, in the name of "hamaari banda", which is a phrase openly used by HR recruiters and senior management. For them south Indians don't count ws Indians. This huge migration coupled with arrogance of migrants (somehow they think they are superior) who refuse to learn and respect the language of the state, and cronyism, is causing a huge demographic change. Parents of children have gone to court against the state's requirement to have Kannada as a mandatory language of study. The Hindi imposition is rampant, both by the union government and the migrants. Kannadigas who are very hospitable and friendly, are feeling they are being colonized by the north Indians. There is growing discomfort. Karnataka gets the least amount of investment from the union government. It has the poorest railway infrastructure among all the states. It has a large amount of GST share arrears from the union government. Please do a video on the issues being faced by the people of the"host" states, and how their ethics, focus on population control have become detrimental to them. The southern states are also going to lose representation percentage in the parliament, and their language and culture are under threat. The disparity of power between the north and the south is going to be equally if not more consequential than the economic disparity among people.

In fact you have really put a Voice to the Struggles of the legally (through legally drafted Top-Management/Business-Owner Favouring Employment Contracts/Appointment Letters) exploited/marginalized Working Masses of our Economy & Country. Mr. Narayana Murthy's comments are Not Surprising as he has been a Business Owner/Top-Mananagement and Benefactor of the Highly Disparate Compensation Structure. Probably not having much to do now, he is probably angling for a Rajya Sabha Membership sponsored by the BJP or may be a Nomination for the PADMA Awards of the Country just before the General Elections (just in case there is a change in Government). By the way a Smart Strategy given that his Son-in-Law has stolen a March over him by becoming a PM of his adopted Country.

Madam, there is a peculiarity to infosys founder's statements across his entire public career. In short he is very critical and pessimist about others. His perspective is very narrow.India's IT industry is not focussed on infosys which is just one of them. Also remember arbitrage in wages is the driving force of india's IT sector.

...work 70 hour-week, pay 50% direct-indirect tax, get no overtime, get no proper roads, overpriced housing, mass transit, or quality life. These billionaires and politicians who live off the sweat of the working man need a reality check. We need to unionize, if it's even possible. That is the antidote to cartels, interest groups, lobbies.

The bus journey from Orissa to Kerala which is a very long journey considering travelling by ordinary bus in which workers are forced to travel in itself is very shameful as there are NO ordinary trains for poor people. This situation exposes the govt. that it does NOT at all care for ordinary citizens of the country, who too pay heavy taxes whenever they buy any goods or services in the form of GST which is enforced even on basic essentials like Milk, Aata etc.. Mr. N.M. is just adding insult to injury and rubbing salt on the wounds to ordinary citizens. I wish he never contests any elections.

This isn’t an India issue alone. You can see this globally. Car companies are not making cars any more. Ford is making only its most expensive models. While Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the world are launching newer models every year. Which was never the case before. Alto sales are gone. And like you said Audi sales increased 97%.

Simple, service based companies are not making same profit they were making earlier. Most bill clients on hourly basis. Billing rates are going low so this is how they get their margins back. Make people work longer, cost cutting in every small things, give less increment/ bonus, replace experienced folks with freshers with less salary. All these philanthropic talks about nation building is all bullocks.

10 years back in India we all knew that no one could freeze our Bank accounts without any criminal record and/or court order. But now every 3 months bank can freeze accounts with KYC rules. Freezing bank accounts without any criminal record itself is unconstitutional. But wait, ESG based bank freezing are also coming. Not to mention the horrors of demonetization in every 3-4 years. Government can print money, but common people have to earn it. Such an awful time to live.

It is difficult to determine whether working 70 hours per week is a good strategy for developing countries as it depends on various factors such as the nature of work, the specific country, and the overall context. While hard work and long hours may be necessary in certain industries or for specific economic goals, it is important to consider the potential consequences of such a strategy. Working excessively long hours can lead to physical and mental health issues, reduced productivity, and poor work-life balance. It may also contribute to economic inequality and exploitation if workers are not adequately compensated or protected by labor laws. Furthermore, sustainable development requires a multi-dimensional approach that encompasses factors such as education, infrastructure development, healthcare, and social welfare. Simply focusing on long working hours may not address all these aspects, and a more comprehensive strategy might be needed. Ultimately, the best approach for developing countries may involve a balanced work-life environment, fair labor practices, investment in education and skills training, and policies that promote economic growth while prioritizing the well-being and development of its citizens.

Work life balance debate- 1. One rule can be applied to all as every individual is different capabilities, dreams and nature. 2. There are people who are extraordinary and ambitious like Narayan Murthy.. which may be account only 5% of total population.. 3. So what about other 95% population who are very ordinary in nature and ambition.. 4. What about per capita income.. 5. If people like Narayan Murthy will focus on one job then what about the other industries.. how other industries will prosper if they don't get customers with high purchasing power.. 6. Work life balance will balance all the industries and all the people in society.. Indian constitution says सत्यमेव जयते.. So am I telling the truth..? Sincere thoughts by Amit Pustake Who am I? With the kind of work a low vision company like infosys takes up, even if workers work 20 hrs everyday, it is not going to work any miracles for the country's economy. Japan and Germany had giants at the top, who aimed at cutting edge, frontline technology and innovation. The workers lent them the muscle power

But, the best known thing about the indian middle class is skimping on wages to their servants. Expecting domestic helpers to work for a few coins and the leftovers😁! Infosys has the same mindset. Goes for the lowest hanging fruits in the IT market. Their work is repetitive and deadend. I have seen young women living in working womens hostels, 3 to a room, working as entry level workers in infosys and similar India origin IT companies. These workers do not really have a lifelong career option. They will slowly rise to slightly higher positions, earn more but by putting in punishing hours. By the time they buy and apartment,(and hopefully pay it off), it is time for the company to discard them, because their salary has become a burden to pay, for the company. They hardly pick up any good quality skills. It is just a few more 'platforms', or the usual people management and office politics skills. They do not design or develop software. Some code. most do more mundane, repetitive work.
