Why Did Pep Guardiola Dump His Philosophy This Season?
If you watched Manchester City this season, you would notice that the team underwent a lot of tactical changes to achieve what they were able to achieve. For years, Guardiola was so stubborn about sticking to his football philosophy at every club he managed, but this season, he completely dumped that philosophy!

3:05 Speaking of total football, there's a video of Cruyff where he says that, although he likes his centre-forward to drop deep in order to create a diamond in midfield, if he has a world-class striker then he's gonna play him as close as possible to the box in order to play to his strengths. That's similar to what Pep did with Haaland. Maximizing your best players' strengths is always the key.

I don’t think he dumped his philosophy, he adjusted it to compete against modern tactics and the roster he has. Physical strong strikers are becoming more important not only to keep the ball but to also make space and shooting lanes for your midfields. They still control posession in almost every game.

Pep has tactically evolved because football is a sport that evolves as well. Pep has expounded on his tactics and understanding of the game since his Barcelona days. The current version of Pep Guardiola is more versatile than his earlier version at Barca. At Barca, Pep had one way of playing the game which was possession football. Now, at City, particularly this season, we have seen Pep become more dynamic. The fundamentals of Cryuff's positional play still remain the same but certain things have changed. City have won games having less possession than the opponent which was unthinkable of a Pep Guardiola team. Games against Arsenal in the Epl and Bayern in the CL, City had less possession but ended up beating both teams resoundingly. Pep has understood that possession and control are not entirely the same thing. For example, the game against Arsenal at the Etihad where City won 4-1, Arsenal had slighly more possession than City yet had less shots on target than City. So, this means that despite City having the lesser possession, they had more control of the game than Arsenal. Basically, Arsenal had more possession but less control while City had lesser possession but more control of the game. The best way to describe Pep's tactical evolution is that he has become less stubborn particularly when it comes to possession. This version of Pep is way more unpredictable and more cunning to the opponent than his earlier days as Barcelona and Bayern coach. The game against Real Madrid at the Etihad a few weeks ago in the CL semi final, City played very similar to Pep's Barcelona. But the game against Bayern in the quater finals, City looked a completely different team all together. They looked like a hybrid between Pep's possession football and prime Mourinho's counter attacking football. Pep has 2 main systems that he uses depending on the opponent he is facing. At Barca, Pep only relied on one main system.

He also have to deal with the players he have. Haaland isn't a dribbler. He is a positional player. He will stay around his area or the box and take an opportunistic shots. He is tall and strong which translates to very hard and fast kicks. That is hard ball to block when you are the goalie, and hard to intercept or react to for the defenders. Messi is a play maker, great assists, and he can score by himself with defenders around him. 2 different players. The coach is just adapting to the style of play these players like.

I dont think he changed his philosophy, to be honest I feel like they didn't use Haaland to his full potential, his stats say otherwise, but there were many times in games in which he made runs behind the defenders but no one passed the ball. Guardiola prioritizes ball control, and does not want to loose the ball. Once they adapt to Haalands runs he'll have even betters stats.

Possession was not his goal and his philosophy it was the right way with the players that he got. Plus while I do think Haaland was very long awaited addition to man city, it is kevin de bruyne that is truly essential in man city's simpler but deadly attack because his cross speed and accuracy is absolutely unreplaceable.

Yes, exactly, people still don't understand him or what "philosophy" is. He has said himself in interviews that his philosophy is to enable the right solutions for the right problems in the right places at the right times. The tactics help achieve and organise that. Keeping the ball was favoured when players could not complete a goal-scoring chance with every pass, or convert that chance with every shot. With his players now, the direct passes are more likely to create goals and win games, and so he decides to play this way. That is according to a philosophy.

If you look at Bayren last year and earlier, they KILLED tiki-taka, because their speed and fast Ball Movement means more "open" shots on goal. Most teams learned Mourhino's pack-the-box tactic to blunt tiki. Haaland was lethal at Dortmund bc he got the ball frequently and in open field. Pep changed to accommodate the skills of this player (look at Lewy at Barca - the slow buildup blunts his runs). If you watch Barca's Messi days, 30% of goals were from counters, long thru passes, long shots. A smart coach exploits what is given him. And like the video says, Defense really matters against great teams.

Yep. They are great at handling the ball and dribbling, especially Messi. The coach just adjusted to the type of players he has and the tactics of the today's league. Barça's tiki taka cannot be replicated by any team either. They had short, nimble players, the best midfield trio of all time and messi, alongaide other greats. I disagree with your premise of Pep’s philosophy. Pep has not embraced a new philosophy. His philosophy remains the same and he communicates it clearly to players. That’s why he excels. What he has done this term in the premiership - and has done everywhere throughout his career - is play to the strength of the players available to him. In FCB, Tiki Taka was unavoidable. The same worked for him in Bayern except that recognized he had a very good focal point in Lewandoski and do not need to play with a False 9. This term in City, he brought a machine in the Focal Point, Harland, who obviously cannot play the pass and move game because he loves to hang around the box. Would have been a waste to compl him play as a false 9, so he finds a way to incorporate him into hIs philosophy through lobbed balls and fast breaks and it worked perfectly. That does not mean he has abandoned his philosophy. He continues to innovate and evolve!

People here claiming Pep didn’t dump his ideas and the “fundamentals” remained the same, which is is misleading to me. The only thing that has remained is aversion to counter attacks. @chinaman1

One thing i will say though, teams are better off taking pot shots at goal this season against City. Than trying to work their way into the box. Because there's just no way they will get past the defence. At least taking long shots from outside the box will increase their odds with shots on target.

Pep is great. But he also has to adapt to players and the game. His players at man city are not the same as barca, they have no messi like players for false 9, barca players have no ego and plays passing a lot in the past cuz the players in barca that time were smart passers. Man city has power strikers at front with aggressive forwards. Tiki taka is not viable to man city.

Answer: he didn't. Guardiola has always been adaptable. He tweaked a couple of things, like sometimes City will sucker teams in to pressing their first phase to then quickly attack like Brighton do, but using a big number 9 isn't something that's anti-guardiola.

People have to realize its not the same players and he cant play the same like in 2009 becuase his players cant adapt perfectly to that playing style. Remember all those players from prime Barcelona were teached to play like that for years in la masia.

From what I watched this season, 85% of this is wrong. The only correct thing said here is "the system was restructured to fit in Haaland"

Halaand can't pass the ball like Messi so that's why and he didn't drop it he was just adapting Halaand, you'll see next season.

Because it was a style of play that fit the world class, professional players he had at Barca…He’s also missing Messi who was the key to that style! It’s not rocket science and he gets way too much credit for that style of football and his teams success afterwards. When you manage the worlds wealthiest teams a toddler could win the league as the manager 😂

Pep didn't dump his philosophy. He simply just wanted to adapt to Erling Haaland and it worked.
