Cynoscephalae is a perfect example for several concepts: - scouting, forraging or strategic hill capturing drawing both sides in a escalating battle - formed up Phalanxes from the front being almost impossible to beat. Unless you are another Phalanx, at best you can hope to hold your line - Phalanxes that have not formed up, being easily defeated by a charge - Phalanxes being also easily defeated by a flank or rear charge The average Hoplite is a subpar spearman, with a really good formation. But without the formation, they are mostly toast. As I understand it, the Romans used to use the Phalanx. It failed against the Italian Hilltribes, so they copied the maniple system from said hilltribes. And promtly used it to defeat phalanxes a few centuries later.
@christopherg2347

@@fabebn They got a longer pike and a smaler shield. While the range is useful to fight other phalanxes and enemies on the front, it has all the same weaknesses. Or if anything, it has them magnified.
@histguy101
@histguy101 2 жыл бұрын
All ancient armies used a phalanx. It came to generally mean "formation" or "infantry formation." There isn't a single type of formation. It's really up to the commander and how many soldiers he has to work with. Im not sure there's any universal advantage of either type of formation in this battle that one side had over the other. In the end, it comes down to the skill of the commander, the experience and valor of the soldiers, and a whole lot of luck. Many of the battles between the Macedonians and Romans were very close, and the Romans had been defeated by phalanxes many times, such as Hannibal's many victories over the Romans during the 2nd Punic War, and the Cimbri & Teutonis around 100bc.

It is surprising that Philip was having serious problems with supplies while fighting on his own territory while the Romans, having half of Greece and the Adriatic sea between them and their homeland, were having no such problems (or at least, their problems with supplies must not have been as grave as those of Philip).

I can't help but feel bad for Phillip V. He was dealt a bad hand yet he played his cards so well and determinedly, never willing to give up without a fight. Too bad great leaders like him and Hannibal, who'd be celebrated in an alternate universe without Rome, are now remembered for their failures instead.
@HistoryMarche
@HistoryMarche 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. But I think he could've had the foresight to "see it coming". Counting on flimsy treaties with Antiochus was error 1. I also think he underestimated Rome a tad bit. They just smashed Carthage and were on the up and up. A more tactful approach could've bought him time to better position himself against Rome.

@@HistoryMarche Philip should have destroyed the Roman forces in Epirus when he had the chance and then send part of his forces to the Greek cities to seize their ships. Once that is done he can use the navy to gain dominance over the Ionian Sea and prevent any other Roman attack.

@@HistoryMarche there's very little evidence for any treaty with antiochus. given that 1)it only comes from polybius who was very pro-roman and pro-achaean and 2)Antiochus did not help philip at all when philip invaded caria, at best it was a non aggression pact and in fact Antiochus tried to take as much of philip's lands in anatolia and thrace when news of philip's defeat were known to him
