Why did the ancient Egyptians mummify people? Preserving a body through mummification helped a person reach the afterlife in three main ways - it provided a home base for the ka and the ba, helped a person become like Osiris, and gave the family more time to gather everything needed for the afterlife.
In this video, I walk you through these 3 reasons for mummification, so that you will know why the ancient Egyptians spent so much time and money turning bodies into what we call mummies.

This book by Salima Ikram is my favorite general introduction to death, burial, and afterlife beliefs and practices. It is a great introduction to a variety of topics related to the afterlife, and has a particularly good section on mummification. I like it so much that I use it as the main text in one of my courses:

If you’re looking for an introduction to the wider subject of ancient Egyptian religion, this book by Teeter is one I love to use when teaching ancient Egyptian religion. It covers many aspects of ancient Egyptian belief and ritual and devotes an entire chapter to death and afterlife beliefs and rituals:
