The black frame I left in the beginning will haunt me forever. Hope you guys enjoyed the video! I know it’s been a while since a proper upload. The evolution video is something I’m spending a lot of time on and combined with some general seasonal depression, it’s made uploading shorter videos tough. I hated the sword. I hated dual wielding. I wanted my health pack and my 123 pistol everyday after halo 1 lol. Timing the power ups. all gone. edit: what im upset about now a days is dual rifle starts. wth

No I respectful don't think it's the coolest. Like cod sprinting and diving wile shooting two guns at the same time! Halo has high jack and assassinations from hight to brake falls or bad ass vehicles. That's what makes halo stand out to me!

I think one of the things Halo Infinite did right was to introduce equipment again. Perhaps if they do decide to add dual wield it can be something like an equipment option. That if you have it equipped, that you can dual wield certain weapons, and to balance it out it halves your ammo reserves for both weapons to make it less OP

The bitter disappointment I felt going from 3 to Reach knowing that dual wielding was gone still lingers with me to this day. It might be a balancing nightmare, but it definitely ticked all the right boxes when it came to Bungie's "rule of cool".

Honestly all you have to do to balance dual-wielding is to make all weapons good for single-wielding and make all weapons dual-wieldable, with the only dual-wield state nerf that weapons need being an accuracy nerf that's tuned right for each weapon. The trick for the devs is to treat dual-wielding as less of a powerup with hidden nerfs, and more of a simple honest tradeoff; more potential damage and versatility (due to holding two weapons) at the cost of less accuracy. This design approach would even make something like two Shotguns against one Shotgun be a balanced matchup while having the two Shotgun player's potential damage be exactly double that of the one Shotgun player; the two Shotgun player would just need to get closer to gain the upper hand.

I always saw the lack of melee and grenades as a balancing trade-off. Having the melee button also ditch your left-hand weapon only reinforced that to me.

Sand box is a term that is thrown around in gaming a lot as a whole but sometimes i get mixed signals about what a weapon sandbox even entails, i think it would be incredibly helpful and cool to see an explanation of what comprises a weapon sandbox in halo and other shooters.

Think about an actual sandbox. There are tools that complement each other and interact with objects in the sandbox to achieve your goal. Physics and other engine features usually play a role in making a sandbox interesting, too. Much like an actual sandbox, but with more blood.

It's the way everything in the metaphorical sandbox plays together. Take MGSV, for example; You've got an in-depth schedule system that compliments a day-night cycle, which compliments decently advanced guard behavior, which compliments in-depth stealth mechanics.

It is a brilliant question and idea for a cool, in-depth video for any viewers! But if I tried answering that question as a Halo fan myself ... I would say that weapon sandbox and sandbox in games in general is a system of all the mechanics and tools that are given to players to achieve, change or transfer their goals. If sandbox in games in general means all the tools and options for player to do stuff differently, in their own way while not breaking the game completely; then weapon sandbox is all of the weapons in that game that make player be able to choose their own way of fighting the enemy or overcome certain obstacle, having options that make gameplay any way different from another options and combination of weapons. "Good" weapon sandbox is a system with lots or, in reverse, with little number of weapons in the game that makes every said tool reliable in their own way and meaningful for game's gameplay and player's feel; the best of their kind make gameplay extremely replayable for players by making a lot of different options for accomplishing their goal, letting players to choose from big amount of weapons that have their own characteristics different from each other and are best and different in their own situations, thus making every weapon interesting to use and feel needed in the game due to their own role (so ususally those kind of sandboxes don't make certain weapons the most reliable in ALL situations and don't make one weapon better than any other ALL the time, because otherwise there would not be any reason to use anything else in sandbox other than boredom). "Bad" weapon sandbox is mostly the complete reverse of that, so it does not have quite a lot of weapons to have a big differences in gameplay, or has too much of them, while not making every or, at least, most of the options meaningful and interesting in any way possible! By the way, "bad" weapon sandbox can also be almost intentionally made if it isn't game's goal to make it interesting and deep for players to analyze it and try out. Also I want to point out that, for games with campaigns, weapon sandbox usually requires a good introductions for its tools, so that players would not be overwhelmed with all the options right away and could understand properly the options and for what they are needed, respectfully making before said introductions feel fit in the game's narrative.

Another big reason as to why it should make a return, at least in my opinion, is that during halo’s peak era, the image of a spartan dual-wielding guns kinda became one of the most iconic and marketable ones for the whole series. It emphasizes the pure strength of spartans in a very direct way: you see that walking tank of a man there? You see the gun in your hands and how big it feels to you? Well he’s carrying *two*, with the ease you might have holding a pair of nerf guns. That alone helps convey the idea of playing as a cyborg supersoldier very handily, especially to anyone with any sort of firearms experience.

I absolutely love the idea of not being able to reload the left hand and just having to toss it. That would also make for an interesting dynamic of risking picking up a fallen enemy's weapon in the open during a heated moment for a better damage output to swing a gunfight in your favor, but you are gambling on if it has enough ammo to make the risk of grabbing it worth it. Also the reload part was always kinda silly that they just went out of view for a second lol.

@@joerowland9128 The logic there was that an ODST isn't strong enough to handle the kickback of two weapons (the weapons are kind of huge when used by a marine, they just look small for spartans). And from a game design point of view, they wanted you to feel more vulnerable and weak.

Sometimes I think fun mechanics are more important than perfect sandbox tuning. It’s an iconic staple of Halo’s peak era. Bring it back. I don’t care what it costs the weapon balancing. It’s fun. If needed, make a separate lobby with different rules and tuning for casual and competitive.

personally i do not miss dual wielding. like you mentioned, it was a balancing nightmare. look at the halo 2 needler. it is by far the weakest version of the needler in halo history because it had to be balanced around dual wielding. i dont think its possible to have dual wielding without making the weapons that can be dual wielded underwhelming, or just straight up bad when on their own. if it had to return, i would say make it campaign only. then the devs dont need to be as strict with the balancing.

They could do what Infinite did and make Campaign and Multiplayer variants. Infinite's Campaign equipment can be spawned separate from the normal equipment in MP, same could be done for weaponry. That way you can have maps with and without it and players can choose whether or not to add it to their maps as well

Tbh I don’t really care of some weapons are weaker than others. If everything in the sandbox is hyper lethal than you get stuff like Modern cod games, halo 5, etc where it feels ultra sweaty. Sometimes a couple of goofy little water guns as a “wild card” can be fun. (I do agree though, the needles incH2 was far too weak. I’m glad it was put in a good spot in H3)

I like that “power moment” idea a lot. I always felt dual wielding made the weapons weaker, but if both weapons were full power with no reloading that would be sweet.

I quite like the idea of dual wielding being this power moment as you described. But then don't stop at small weapons. Let me dual wield a br with horrible accuracy and let me dual wield rocket launchers, but when I fire them, they fly out of my hands because I can't keep a hold on them.

The fact that Bungie allowed enemies to dual wield but refused to allow us to do so is one of the biggest gripes I have with that game. It's not like Reach's Elites are weak either. They're probably the strongest in the series. Don't give already borderline overpowered enemies the ability to do something you can't do yourself. That's terrible game design.

I really like the idea of allowing dual wield pickups but only for the given magazine and no reloads. That encourages adaptability and interacting with the tools on the field more, the inverse of how H2, H3 dual wielding locked the player into what they had equipped

first, dual wield penalty shouldn't be reduced damage, instead only to affect spread (after first shot) and recoil, also add a slight reload (or cooldown) time penalty. second, dual wielding prevents grenades (and equipment) but allows melees and weapon stowing. Maybe adding a short melee wait timer to slow down follow ups post-melee. third, this means dual wielding, while having its flaws, grants you a power or utility boost from 2 small-arms weapons without disabling other sandbox interacts except for grenades/equipment which i think is an ok compromise. fourth, for flavour, let you dual wield with an objective item like the flag or bomb or oddball. If old Halo objective OHKO then dual wielding could soften it to a regular melee hit damage.

Funny enough... There's a control scheme that allows you to have free access to the Golden Triangle without problem in TMCC If you use the Universal Zoom Control Scheme (Aka COD Style controls), you have total Freedom of what you can do while dual-wielding Grenades? Right bumper, you immediately lose your second weapon to throw a Grenade Melee? Right Stick Button and done Reload? Just Press X ando you reload both weapons (Except Halo 3, which the secondary reload Is attached to left stick button) I was thinking why I haven't suffered this issue before... And then I remembered that since Halo 4 ando since TMCC Came out I've been using this control scheme until today.

Halo Studios PLEASE bring back dual wielding. it was so fucking cool. balance ideas to keep golden triangle: 1. dual wield accuracy penalty with heavier weapon recoil climb. 2. allow melee still by giving it shortest reach AND per hit damage reduction. 3. fix grenades/utility use so player drops *dominant* hand weapon to throw grenade/use util, or interact to interact with buttons. i like no reloads for secondary weapon. but that would make energy weapons too unbalanced with their battery % compared to only just one magazine with no reload

Dual weilding was a huge reveal for halo 2 and got perfected in halo 3. It just made you feel like a badass. I miss casual halo before it suddenly went into esports mode

I believe one way they balanced dual welding was weapons had a different damage output when held together, like the pistol was slightly weaker but at the same time it could still headshot so having one along with a plasma rifle was rather usefull at times.

First fix: Only the off hand weapon gets the dual wield penalty instead of both. If it were to make a return, I could see it blocking off grenades totally/dropping offhand as it works now and allowing for faster melee hits at lower damage, which would allow for interesting combinations with brute pistols(For example: Instead of doing normal damage, melees while dual wielding inflict .75 damage and attack 1.3 or 1.4 faster)

Exactly. Melee while dual wielding is something I do quite often especially against Elites. Grenades are the only thing you're 100% locked out of. Melee attacks cause you to drop one of your weapons but you can still do it so therefore you're not locked out of it. Personally, if you use a melee attack while dual wielding in a situation where dropping one of your weapons (which you can quickly pick back up) is detrimental then you shouldn't be doing it. It's player error, not game design.

Dual wielding was one of those unique things that no other game had done before. It never should have been removed since it was part of Halo’s identity. Everyone talks about balance when they could easily just lock it as an option for customs or for specific playlists. No one’s forcing you to dual wield; it’s there for fun. Just like how assassinations and playable Elites were sort of just there despite putting you at a disadvantage. The constant need to balance the game for competitive is the reason why Halo no longer feels the same anymore.

Projectile velocities vary widely across the sandbox. *You can't lead shots for a Plasma Rifle and hit shots with the Magnum at the same time.* It works better to just have a fast weapon switch between smaller weapons that you would have dual wielded in the past. Now you can absolutely make a case for it in VR where you can aim both weapons separately.

It did have advantages over grenades and melee. Different weapons had different properties and it let us mix and match them. Whether that was enough if an advantage it debatable, but it was always fun as hell to play with.

My head cannon to fixing dual wielding would be to increase recoil and bloom when using 2 weapons. Let people melee and throw grenades and if you want to drop the 2nd weapon double tap the same button you used to pick it up.

I think duel wielding is a great idea that leans into halo's gameplay loop of comboing multiple weapons together to quickly kill enemies, but it was removed before it could reach its full potential. Making it a brief moment of power instead of a requirement to make a gun effective is a good direction to take it. Removing reloads while duel wielding could lean into this idea. I think bungie had the right idea of making the spawn weapons non-duelwieldable in halo 3, but they could've chosen to not spawn the guns in pairs. Make the player traverse the map a little more if they wanted the power.

I know in Coe mw2019 a certain gun got nerfed in dual wield mode to deal less damage than in single mode. The devs could do that for dual wielding where damage is reduced in dual wield or play with strong bloom for dual wield....there's also an option for campaign only to let you get those moments but keep it so it doesn't mess with balance in mp

I believe that dual wielding needs to be strong by nature, thats the whole point of carrying 2 weapons, and most of them are close range weapons, so the trade off is you can absolutely melt down opponents but loose granades and are limited to close range, (if you want to change to a ranged weapon you had to drop the 2nd gun) so its actively choosing between one or the other and strategize about picking weapons to combo different damage types.

I like the no reload and drop after. I think there should be the time delay to throw a grenade as well. Because you'd have to play the animation of dropping the weapon and then throwing the grenade. Naturally, it should be longer b/c your hand isn't free to throw the grenade.

dual wielding is tricky to balance. and that fine tuning is what leaves it on the discarded feature floor. an approach would be giving any dual wielded weapon a bloom/muzzle climb to match its dps and status effects per second to a climb rate. a pistol jumps, an automatic rattles, a beam weapin travels up. firing both weapons at once adds the respective effect together. single wield "master tuned" versions for cetain gamemodes should exist. the only difference being tighter initial spread (or slightly reduced bullet magnetism distance falloff for beam weapons). so its an elite variant in a way that does not outcompete the main version in the main range, but outside of it. and the dual wielded main version is a hard to control shredder at shorter ranges. the melee button is important for dual wield weapon dropping, and so is the grenade button for firing. so these two things can't work with dual wield. the insane damage potential of two hard to control but otherwise urestricted guns should outweigh that though. having dual wielded holstering, so your backup can be dual weapons, would be a great addition though.

But this time I hope for (PC input) that dual wielding will be "hold E to dual wield" as opposed to "press random far away letter/number to dual wield". The beauty in simplicity, and stream lining design and interactivity with multi purpose inputs is the superior game design.

As cool as dual-wielding is I never really used it when I played Halo 2 it was just too clunky for me. My favorite idea to reintroduce it is to have two separate reticles when you dual-wield. That way you can only do double damage for large enemies/vehicles and crowds but for single target and multiplayer you could only use one at a time if you are using the plasma/kinetic combo against shields. It should be faster than switching weapons if you can re-aim fast enough.

I would've loved if they made combinations with the dual wielding. Bungie seemed to never know how to balance it to make sense, make the weapons weaker and horrific accuracy just made it less incentive for the player to use dual wielding. But what if they had something like weapon combos? like if the enemies hit with a charged plasma pistol could then be blasted by an smg to make that enemy explode? I feel like making the weapons have more interactions each other beyond "needler go brrr" and noob combo would make the system way more interesting. Also, please bring the elephant back.

I think it would be cool if some weapons changed their functions when dual wielded in order to compensate for balance, such as a normally automatic weapon turning to a burst-fire mode when combined with another gun , or a brute pistol that fires normal projectiles single-wielded but transforms into a dual-wieldable melee weapon. Also, dual-wielding something like the sticky detonator from halo 4 would be dope.

As clunky as it was, I miss dual wielding and I wish so much for it to return. Even if it's just the classic version of it, I'd be fine just having the novelty of dual wielding.

As someone who always preferred Halo’s PvE to PvP, I always hated dual wielding because it made half the weapons effectively useless, especially on higher difficulties (where I prefer to play). That said, I agree with you that the ideas you put forward would make dual wielding more appealing, but I do have a few to add. 1. Let us keep our offhand weapon when we switch weapons. Part of the problem with dual wielding is that it also prevents you from swapping to your second weapon, and in situation where your other weapon would be more useful (a rocket launcher in an area full of vehicles for example) you would be left with an underpowered weapon when you switched back and would have to scramble to find another weapon for your offhand, when it was just easier to carry another two handed weapon. 2. Give the guns additional function in one hand. The ODST and Reach Magnums had scopes. Let us use them when not dual wielding. That helps make the guns more useful in the sandbox. 3. Give the Guns enough damage. I know this is a bit of a cop out but part of the problem with dual wielding is it just made every gun that could be dual wielded feel anemic. The plasma rifle for example went from something that was useful in CE, even on legendary, to something that was almost pointless in 2. The Reach magnum was a gun that I felt could have been balanced well with dual wielding, even if you took out the recoil bloom.

Dual Wielding just feels lost to its time. I really wish dual wielding along with other classic features and mechanics returned in future Halo installments

The way I would have Dual-Wielding return is to lift some restrictions. Let the player be able to: - Melee - Switch weapons - Use equipment (speed penalty) - Enter vehicles - Pick up objectives or support weapons - Hold the switch weapons button to drop the second weapon or something All without dropping the second weapon. This would make the mechanic more desirable and reliable. But it's not like it's going to make it overpowered - far from it. Dual-Wielding is still going to be pretty limited to low ranges due to accuracy becoming a problem that comes with holding a weapon in each hand. If you try to use it at range, you're still going to likely lose. I see why Dual-Wielding is hard to balance, but I think the effort to try is worth it. In this day and age, when games can now be patched and updated frequently, it's a better time than any to go back and experiment with this mechanic.

I want Halo to just make Spin offs… by that I mean a STAND-ALONE separate system Firefight mode = Dual Wield. The last true firefight was 2011… it’s been over a decade and 343 can’t do that mode without just being a custom game mode.

The main issue is like you said, all weapons you could dual wield were made with that in mind, so they weren't very good on their own. But that's a topic where I believe the rule of cool reigns supreme still, even if the multiplayer crowd may complain about how its done. It didn't help its case that many of the combo weapons weren't very good to begin with, in campaign and multiplayer both (H2 needlers, SMGs, and plasma rifles were the only worthwhile choices). But it was still cool and unique.

It was a feature that made the game’s weapon sandbox way way more complicated to balance. Any weapon that was potentially dual wieldable had to be worthless when used solo, or else they will be busted otherwise. Aesthetically it’s really cool but there’s no way to keep it in a healthy state

my proposition: - the player has the shoulder-mounted grenade launcher from doom eternal, bound to X - the player can melee while dual-wielding - weapons deal less damage while dual-wielded, but deal their full damage when used normally - precision weapons can't instakill on a headshot when they're dual-wielded, but otherwise, they deal their full damage - the player can carry dual-wielded weapons in their secondary slot - instead of simply pressing Y, the player now has to hold LB + Y to drop their off-hand weapon - LB + B throws the off-hand weapon. it doesn't deal a lot of damage, and you can't shoot during the throwing animation. however, the weapon automatically reloads itself upon hitting an enemy, and the player can then catch it out of the air and continue blasting - thrown weapons will fly past enemies if they're too close to the player. holding LB lets you catch an enemy's thrown weapon out of the air, but you still have to reload it if it didn't hit anyone possible weapon synergies: - energy swords can be dual-wielded. they lose the ability to lunge and take two hits to kill, but they drain slightly less battery, and other dual-wielded weapons retain their full strength. double energy swords retain their lunge ability - the player cannot throw grenades while overcharging a plasma pistol or while cooling down a plasma weapon, whether dual-wielding or not - if a plasma weapon overheats while the player is dual-wielding, they can't melee until it cools down completely - overheating two plasma weapons causes an explosion, but it's delayed just enough that other players might escape. the explosion does the same damage as a plasma grenade

I think the reason they got rid of duel wielding is because 1) you couldn't melee or use grenades limiting your options when using duel wielding and 2) all the duel wieldable weapons felt like useless pea shooters to the point where using 2 of them didn't make up for that 2handed weapons were just better, even not taking melee weapons or grenades into account.

Dual Wielding was completely fine in Halo 3? Best example was the Pit. At Snipe 1, grab dual SMG for CQC, then when survived, toss it for sniper. Grab dual Mauler at Sword and keep them, when changing position to tower, toss one mauler and use BR Mauler to control tower. People just need to play with the mechanix properly.

Bungie and 343 both had a problem with leaving behind fun things for prior Halo games in their sequels… I have an idea for a new kind of Halo game: ⚪️It’ll be a Super-Forge first and foremost, with ALL possible assets from all the last FPS Halo games (or at least revamped versions of them)… ⚪️From there, the Developers focus 100% of their efforts on perfecting their forge until they, and by extension the players, can remake ANY and EVERY part of the past Halo games through it, be it multiplayer, Campaign, etc… ⚪️And would have a bigger sandbox than ALL of the past Halo games *_Combined._* ALL the guns and vehicles and whatever else, and even the option to have any given Halo’s control schemes and mechanics at once.

I think it would be cool ikf some weapons just came dual wielded, which would hopefully simplify balance. Ik it's the kinda boring solution, but a more realistic one for the devs to implement that still allows those moments. For example they could bring back the smg or plasma rifle as dual wielding powerhouse weapons for use in peoples faces, but difficult to control at longer distances, making cool moments still possible but more balanced for higher difficulty campaign playthroughs and close quarters maps

As much as infinite was a disappointment as a whole package, The campaigns sandbox really let you go wild and with it being touted as a "return to form" and the game's controls/feel-of-play being a well-crafted blend of old and new I was let down pretty heavily by dual-wielding still being MIA. Felt like the perfect game to reintroduce it.

I'm more indifferent to dual wielding. If they do brought it back cool, if they don't whatever, but I do like your idea on how they can refine it. Kinda surprised Bungie didn't think of it sooner but then again at that point they were kind of burnt out and didn't want to go through the extra hassle.

i wish theyd return the spartans death noises, listening to the screams when exploding or falling peak Halo, we still feel as if we're still barely scrapping that Bungie magic. hALO Studios has a ways to go and Infinites gameplay was a good start, sadly taken 343i 10 ish years to get with that program, but they still have the rest of the game to accomplish what Bungie Halo was able to create back in the day and once they understand its not graphics or new trends that made Halo, Halo made Halo ❤❤

Its a cool idea with zero good executions. Neither H2 or H3 got it right and nobody uses it in multiplayer unless it's a gamemode centered around it.

As a Campaign only (& strictly Campaign) player, I really really miss dual wielding. I don't think it's a bad idea at all if dual wielding feels overpowered in Campaign. That's the whole fantasy of it (which is something I wish modern Halo would apply philosophically as a whole i.e., let power weapons, big vehicles, etc BE overpowered but that's a discussion for another day). As for fixing the golden triangle issue, I honestly never found it to be an issue in Campaign. I'd dual wield & when the time came for using nades or melees I'd do that & then try to pick that weapon back again once the fight is over. It's just fun ;-;

Honestly? If it returns, I'd just like it to be a campaign-only thing. Not only does it play into the distinction between the Master Chief and a bunch of SPARTAN-IVs, but it also neatly sidesteps the balance question - who cares if two SMGs is more powerful than one SMG if you're only using them to fight Covenant AI and not real people?

Every weapon has a dual wield ability, every gun combo has to have a good spot in the sand box, while the only weapons you can't dual wield is power weapons obviously, dishonoreds dual wield worked really well but you can't do weapon wheels in a multiplayer game

All you have to do is make it an alt fire mode for certain weapons like the PR or SMG. Bind it to the scope button, it's not like close range guns like the SMG use scopes anyway. For balances sake, don't make it mix and matchable. Too much of a headache. You already mix and match damage types with your primary and secondary weapon.

Dual-wielding in H2/3 was so dope. Not only did it add more mechanical depth to the sandbox, but it looked cool as hell. I'll be honest, I don't really care that you couldn't throw grenades while DWing, or that you couldn't melee without dropping your left-hand weapon. It felt like an appropriate tradeoff for having more firepower. The simplest way to balance it is to give DW weapons functions that they can only assess when not DW'd. For example, maybe the Magnum has a scope in the next game, but if you DW it with another weapon, you can no longer scope in. Have it be a "utility vs. firepower" thing, and if it's unbalanced, so what? Balance is overrated. Sure, developers should try to aim to make a balanced game, but it's also far from the end of the world if it's unbalanced. Plenty of classic games are super unbalanced (hell, just ask the fighting game community, and they can point out at least a dozen games that are fantastic while being unbalanced). Shoot, H2/3 are unbalanced in a few ways, but they're still some of the most praised games in the series. Anyways, my wild idea for DWing is have it where every single weapon in the sandbox can be DW'd, and focus in on that "utility vs. firepower" design approach. Sure you can DW sniper rifles, but considering you can't scope in, would you really want to be stuck to only no-scoping with them? DWing swords looks cool as hell, but how effective would it really be if you can't do the sword lunge? Stuff like that.
