I realised that he was a chauvinistic fellow just looking at his films. Always pushed for male supremacy in a very sophisticated way. The "liberated wonan" is portrayed in a way that shows he lacks any real understanding of the psyche of such a person. Like Anuradha Patel's character in Ijaazat, they come to a bad end, either due to untimely death, or falling prey to the carrion eaters of society. Sampuran Singh Kalra may be a competent lyricist, but he is a typical macho Punjabi man. Doesn't really understands independent women. So when Rakhi questioned his inappropriate behavior for a married man, he could not handle it. People always ridiculed Rakhi for her slurred speech and alleged alcoholism, but I felt there was deep trauma that was responsible for her state.

Marriage is not a beautiful cage to keep someone forever, instead it should grant freedom and support to the other to flourish and fly. One incident changed Rakhee's life forever, and yes, she took right decision at right time. In most cases, Indian women won't take such steps even in such situations, and simply blame fate and settle. Rakhee set an example, long back in 1970s, on how we should give importance to our self respect and dignity more than anything else and anyone else, even if it's own husband. Certain boundaries are needed to keep every relation green and healthy. That's it!!

Thanks for sharing. Gulzar has been my favorite writer and director and he still is. This incident introduced me to the other side of his personality. I still find it difficult to digest that Gulzar would be so violent, but it might have been a slap or two in extreme anger (not that it is not violence). However, this detail elevated the stature of Rakhi multifold, in my mind. She has been an excellent actress and it was always a question in my mind about their married life. The fact that they did not marry again goes on to show the strength of their love for each other. Gulzar acted like an insecure and/or a man who thinks he owns her woman, while Rakhi acted like a person so madly in love that she was ready to sacrifice herself. I wonder if her desire to act in movies and Gulzar's refusal had been building bitterness/anger in Rakhi's mind and she might have told him that she was going to go back to movies. Much happens during the argument between spouses and not all can control their actions in anger. The physical beating crossed the line and broke her faith in her devotion to Gulzar. It also might have validated in her mind that her sacrifice was not worth for a man who could resort to violence. She left him because she did not want the love to die but she decided not to sacrifice her life. She preserved the love but lived as a broken woman. In my view, she showed the extreme example of being in love by surrendering herself thoroughly. Her inner strength is amazing as well as she came back and established herself on top again. Gulzar channeled his anger and sadness inside and it reflects in everything he writes. My respect for Rakhi has gone up by many notches. I still love Gulzar as an artist, but I feel sad that some of his words are coming from a place of weakness inside.
